Posted March 24, 201311 yr Hi there my building mates! Even if I'm still in london at the moment I'm planning my most challenging MOC I've ever tried to build :P I know that usually top builders don't reveal anything until it's done but: - 1 im not a top builder XD - 2 i can't wait to show you what I'm doing lol I'm pretty impatient because this is going to be my biggest and most complex MOC I've ever created... So this is what im going to start from the 8th of april when I'll get back to my place Lancia Fulvia HF and it's gonna have the following features - Two L motors for front drive with differential - Return to center steering - remote controlled 3+R or 4+R gearbox (hopfully 4+R so it could be the same as the real one) - Automatic clutch - full suspensions - Remote controlled handbrake (to have some fun on dirt) - Front LED lights - Brake lights (activated when the handbrake is used) - Working hood and doors and steering wheel ...i really hope i'll be able to make it :D this is a scale test :) I just need to find those 3x3 circles in a transparent version if they exist...
March 24, 201311 yr Well the good news is that it does seem to be easy enough to build. The hardest thing I see is the clutch and the strain from changing gears. I would make a few different test versions of the gearbox in simple chassis to work out what works and what does not.
March 24, 201311 yr Author Well the good news is that it does seem to be easy enough to build. The hardest thing I see is the clutch and the strain from changing gears. I would make a few different test versions of the gearbox in simple chassis to work out what works and what does not. some months ago i built this that has an automatic clutch system it's different from fuel cars but it works great for electric motors http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=77753&hl= and even if it's small enough to put it inside this car i need to think a smaller way to make it :P and i've already some ideas...probably the hardest part is gonna keep everything "clean" i mean, id like to hide all the motors inside the chassis so the cockpit is realistic...this mean that i will have really a small room to fit everything :P Very intresting project. What wheels are you going to use? i scaled the model to the tow truck (9395) wheels...they're the most similar to the real ones :)
March 24, 201311 yr 3x3 in trans-clear were in 8 official sets, they're not too hard to find. http://rebrickable.com/parts/43898
March 24, 201311 yr Author oh thanks skirrid! i didnt know there were some transparent 3x3! can't wait to get back home and start building! :D
March 25, 201311 yr Author should i keep you updated during my planning process (by showing some WIPs made in mlcad) or maybe you prefer some hype :P?
March 25, 201311 yr I'd like to see updates. I think the Lancia is a great choice of model to work with. Your mockup and cad overlay are very promising- I'll keep checking this thread and really hope to see this get built.
March 27, 201311 yr Author Ok, by now i got this... yesterday i was trying to convert my 3+R gearbox in a 5+R but it takes too much space and it's gonna be heavy BUT! tonight i had a smart idea on how to make a 4+R smaller than the 3+R :D so, for now im gonna go to work, and at about 6:30pm ill start planning my new gearbox...i cant wait :D
March 27, 201311 yr Very intersting. First FWD car and remote controlled with gearbox. Looking forward... Are you sure that this suspension with 62 wheels looks proportional? Isn't front axle too wide for such wheels? Did you calculate scale sizes? Good luck. Edited March 27, 201311 yr by rm8

Wheels on older sports cars used to be relatively small- look at the first photo and then the ghosted front elevation- the 62s loot a bit tall, but close enough.
March 27, 201311 yr Author Yeah mate look at the first image i posted... To be sincere i had to stretch horizontally the original picture a little bit but it still looks ok :-)
March 29, 201311 yr Author ok, so, i've spent some days to workout how to make a small 3+R gearbox, and i guess that this one should work fine....but i have to test it manually :P btw these are the proportions of my car Bigger size: http://oi50.tinypic.com/b6ys83.jpg Edited March 29, 201311 yr by piterx
March 29, 201311 yr Nice, what about using 2 new u-joints instead of the 2 old ones in the diferenttial?, in fact I don´t know if there would be difference .
March 29, 201311 yr the way he has it now the wishbones are not aligned with the shafts...we'll see how it turns out...
March 29, 201311 yr the way he has it now the wishbones are not aligned with the shafts...we'll see how it turns out... Ah yes,I think you are going to have to change that.
March 29, 201311 yr Author eheh i apologize if im not precise :P it's quite tricky to put everything in the right way on Ldraw...to me this is just an overall plan...i've never used cads to build my models, i prefer the oldschool way :D in 10 days im gonna finally put my hands on my loved bricks again :D
March 29, 201311 yr It should be okay geometrically, since the CV joints can slide. But since it's going to be RC, there's a pretty good chance that the axles will pop out of the differentials. So yeah, I'd also use 2 CV joints there.
March 29, 201311 yr oh, and since you said you purposely stretched the image, why not use the new wishbones? the one you present are the old ones like in the 8466...I think you will benefit if you use the new ones
March 29, 201311 yr Author hmmm im not updated i guess :P wich ones are the latest? i thought i was using those from the offroader 8297
March 29, 201311 yr I would make the pivot point true in the steering arms with a CV joint as mentioned above.
March 29, 201311 yr yes, and that is a vital mistake-you are using instead of <new wishbones which go well with double CV joints
March 29, 201311 yr Author oh yeah i see! actually i don't know wich one i got hmmm...ok in the meanwhile I'll correct my ldraw file :P thanks for the advice! edit: i don't have that piece in my parts list...well...let's pretend that the one i used is the right one :P at least for now! 2edit: but im 99% sure i have the right ones at home :P Edited March 29, 201311 yr by piterx
