"Ok you need to get a system down. First thing you want to do is feel out the obvious parts. Legs, torso, figure stand plate, and head. All sets have that. So dont waste your time too long feeling those in the bag. The next thing is to find something unique.

Surfer girl is the easiest. Her surfboard is HUGE. It is long and flat. No other figure in series 4 has anything like that.

Artist, feel for small items like the paint brush or I prefer to look for the painters palate.

Werewolf is harder. I look for the bone to be absolutely sure. Sometimes hair pieces can feel the same. So i dont waste my time on feeling hair."

I did try to find the unique parts. All i could feel as far as obvious were kinda flat stuff(no clue what it was) or some sort of part that I couldn't id what is was or even a few cases of finding the head or torso. Honestly, if it wouldn't of been for the guy helping me, I woulda turned to eBay instead. I didn't have a ton of time in the store and I wanted to invest my time in the PAB and BAM bin instead.

Well it is true there are still good deals to be found on ebay. I just won 3 Commander Cody's & 3 Clone Pilots for $10.

However they only had the basic clone trooper torso, so I still need 3 Cody Torso's and 3 clone pilot torsos and 5 clone helmets for use on the regular torsos. And oddly one of the torsos is for an original stormtrooper  Now I also need a stormtrooper helmet.

After just getting back into Lego a couple weeks ago I was wishing I hadn't missed out on all the Indy sets. Today I happened to run into a TRU Express at lunch and ran across a Fighter Plane Attack set. It was marked 54.99 but I figured I would ask them to scan it since it was an older set, just in case. It rang up full price but the clerk tried pulling it up online, since he couldn't find it he offered me $15 off! So I'm now the proud owner of a cool Indy set. Set me back on my funds for the Queen Anne's Revenge tho!

Christmas 2010 bought Market St. for $90 and Cafe Corner for $150 from a guy that tried to sell entire city at once on eBay. No haggle. PMed him and ended buying a big bulk of his sets at around RRP. Very happy. Had just bought the GG a couple months before thinking about reselling that when it was discontinued... Now I am into modulars! :classic:

Didn't fancy going on the usual fruitless lego carbooter trawl on sun

morning. Had set alarm for 6.30, quick peek out the curtains, not raining

but had been most of the night, everywhere wet so back to bed.

Woke again 8am, sun getting out a bit, wife and kids still flat out so

crept out. Not many stalls, most put off by weather, probably about 20 but

more turning up as weather improved.

Quick 10 minute scan, not much doing, about to sneak off too McDonalds for

a greasy brekkie when I came across a large stall just setting up selling

toys.

Lots of modern SW figs and wrestling figs.

Oh, and 7 boxes (those supermarket crate-style ones) full of SW lego !!!!

Quick scan showed that some was built but all was very dusty and mixed

together, but lots of figs.

Seller said he'd tried to shift it on ebay ( don't think so, just wanted to

up the price ) but couldn't as had no original boxes.

Obvious sets looking mostly built were 6210 and 6211

Traders were starting to circle so I asked how much for the lot. He wanted

£200. At that point I still thought probably a bargain but its a hell of a

lot of money to part with at a carbooter (my biggest ever purchase prior to

this was £30 ! ) and I only had about £120 on me.

I said too much so would buy a few of the boxes individuallyand asked him

to price them per box. Quick scrape through them and saw Jango's ship,

Jabba Palace, dewback etc dotted around so took a punt and said I'll have

this one, this one etc as he added it up and came to £70 for 5 boxes (don't

this maths was his strong point).

That left 2 boxes with mainly Jabba barge and Star Destroyer in. Offered

£30 for both and he took it.

Brought my car round and was just loading it in when he said I might also

need these - bag full of the original instructions, most hardly used !!!

Left in a cold sweat with some buyers shaking their heads that I just spent

£100 on dusty used lego lol

Spent rest of sunday / today sorting through all look at least 98% complete and all with original instructions and just 4 figs missing from the

whole lot !! (71 sets !!!!!!)

Could free stuff from lego be counted as a lucky find? If so, I have one. I wanted to order 2 lego horses from the PAB online department. i sent an email asking when or if the horses would come back into stock and I got this email back last night:

"Thank you for contacting us on 05/25/11 and for your interest in LEGO® brand products.

I'm sorry to hear you were having difficulty finding the parts you wanted in our Pick a Brick system. Sometimes parts become unavailable in the PAB system because we are running low on quantity, or have stopped manufacturing the part. There can be many reasons. I have looked up this particular part, for the white horse, and we are running slightly low on quantity right now. However, we do have more than two :) I have sent two of part 4121830 out for you so you don't have to worry about driving to a LEGO store, or waiting for the status of the part to change.

If you ever come across other parts that are unavailable in the Pick a Brick palette, don't hesitate to request the part number through our parts replacement here: http://us.service.lego.com/en-US/replacementparts/default.aspx

We can check the quantities of the parts you need and get back to you with a quote.

Although we usually ask people to pay for replacement pieces I'm sending these for free - so now you can get building and have fun!

Your LEGO parts are on their way from our warehouse in Denmark and should be with you in 7 to 10 business days.

Thank you again for contacting us. We wish your family many happy hours of creative building with LEGO brand toys in the years to come.

Sincerely,

Allyson

LEGO Direct Consumer Services"

OMG! Is that lucky or what. :D I can't believe that happened. All I asked was when it'd be back in stock and said how the closet store is quite a drive from us so that really isn't an option(100% honesty here) and I'm getting 2 horses free O_O

I started to search Ebay about one year ago and while looking for all those sets I've always wanted I came around quite a few bargains, including two 6973 Deep Freeze Defender (19,99€ resp. 23,50€), 6982 Explorien Starship (16,17€ with box), 6279 Skull Island (13,62€) and 6473 Res-Q Hovercraft (9,99€ with box).

But my best find up to date has to be 6082 Fire Breathing Fortress from the Dragon Masters, in MISB condition for no more than 8,95€ Buy Now on Ebay *huh*

I'm still amazed at how cheap I got this one and I'm quite sure that the seller didn't know what he could have charged if he only researched a bit more.

I was at the Enfield Pageant today (It's a car show) and amongst all the old car parts I came across 3804 - Mindstorms Robotic Invention I asked the price and when told it was £10 I decided it would be wrong not to buy it! Just been through the inventory on Bricklink, and apart from a few minor bits, it is all there. Not tested it with the computer yet but things are looking good, it looks like a well looked after kit!

I just had to write this down. Today after a job interview, I had lunch with a friend and I mentioned I (and my son though he's not allowed to touch them) are into Lego and they, she has a thirteen year old son and a husband, should get into them too. She said they were but no longer and had some stuff in boxes if I wanted them. Naturally, I choked down my excitement and calmly told her I would be mildly interested so off we went to check out the Lego stash. Three boxes later and about 8 hours of sorting I am the proud recipient of:

6211 - Imperial Star Destroyer

6209 - Slave I

6210 - Jabba's Sail Barge

7662 - Trade Federation MTT

7093 - Skeleton Tower

7092 - Skeleton's Prison Carriage

7091 - Knight's Catapult Defense

7090 - Crossbow Attack

7009 - Final Joust

7647 - MX-41 Switch Fighter

7648 - MT-21 Mobile Mining Unit

7772 - Lobster Attack

7773 - Tiger Shark Attack

And I haven't quite figured out the rest. There are a couple more Castle (Skeleton) themed ones as yet unknown and a 1.5 gallon bag of parts and minifigs that look interesting, perhaps another SW theme I don't know. Needless to say I have to work on Lego related stuff tomorrow. No Instructions yet, but she says she has them all and when she finds them I promised her $50.00 USD she didn't want to take that, but ....

I am just so excited I had to share this.

I love this thread!!!! Its great to see what people find or stumble upon!

My elderly neighbour 2 doors down needed a hand moving stuff out of her shed a while back, and while I was there I noticed a 40L (10.4 Gallon for you US folk) Bin full of familiar looking bricks. I asked her If I could take a look, and inside was pretty much all of the Classic space series with mint condition instructions and multiple Lego catalogues. She then mentioned that its been up in that box for decades and hasn't been played with since her Grandkids grew up in the early 80's.

I then did the opposite of what my Lego obsessed personality normally would do, and encouraged her to keep them safe away for her eventual great-grandkids, and to NEVER sell them or give them away, as they would bring so much joy to kids for years to come.

Shes gonna get in trouble if I notice that box missing when I visit again......

Every once in a while I stumble across a good sale. At Target I found the following-

Cars 2 Flo's cafe 8487-50% off. Kept what I wanted and sold the rest off. Made my money back and then some.

City off road fire truck and boat 7213-50% off

Prince of Persia-Quest against time 7572-60% off

Prince of Persia-Ostrich Race 7570-75% off

Harry Potter-knight bus 4866 50% off

World Racers-almost every set-50%-75% off

Some other small Harry Potter sets at 75%-85% off

And several others I can't remember right now.

Kmart

Space shuttle 3367-50% off- employee stocking error

eBay

Case of Minifigures series 1&2 one of each for a total of $300 which is pretty good.

Other than that I've had many buy one get one, buy one get one 50% off and so on. For me, Target tends to have the best deals. I always hear about great finds at Walmart but I've never found any myself. After seeing all the great Goodwill finds I may start checking them out.

Here in Slovenia in Müller shops theya're currently selling series 3 and 4 minifigs for 1€ each instead of usual 1.99! I sure had to get a bunch of them ...

Only time I got really lucky was when a store which had been sitting on a huge pile of 8265s marked them down to 40 euros, and 8258 for 70 euros. I bought 2 loaders and a truck. Then a couple of weeks later they had a 20% all legos sale and still had a bunch of the 8265 left, so I got another 2 or 3 for 32 euros each. Half went into my parts collection, half are still untouched. I really regret not buying extra 8421s at the same store a year or two earlier, but I couldn't afford to back then.

Now the chain has been sold and they dont discount anything anymore :(

A bit jealous of all those charity shop bargains I have to say! We don't have such luck over here I'm afraid... One of my best bargains was finding a Grand Emporium for $80aud. The box was pancaked but I lucked out and all the bags and instructions were still there. This was a better bargain before they re-released another wave overseas, but it did the trick of sucking me into modulars!

Not the greatest deal ever, but pretty good I think... won an ebay auction the other day for

7939 Cargo Train (~$200)

7996 Double Switch track (~65 on bricklink)

4519 Rail Crossing (~25)

TEN 7896 track packs (so 80 straights [~2] and 80 curved [~0.50] track pieces)

Current value is about $485. I won it for $330. I plan to sell off parts of it and keep some to expand my train layout :)
