Mister Phes, Bonaparte said he uses the HMS Surprise as a base, and the HMS Surprise existed in the late 18th and early 19th century. Aside from that, Napoleon also lived in this period, so I guess it's a late 18th century ship. Am I right Mr Bonaparte?

Ahhhhhh I didn't realise that's he also meant that by "as a base". I thought he just meant for the design, not the historical aspects as well.

Even if he didn't meant the historical aspects as well, the design is very typical for this period..

Ahhhh but without being informed for all I know Bonaparte could be basing his creation on the ships built in the late 18th and early 19th century, BUUUUUT he could be using it in a 17th century storyline. Indeed this would be pose an anachronism but historic accuracy has never been strong point when it comes to LEGO.

This is why I always get clarification...

There was actually a way to date the ship Mr. Phes.

In the initial post of this thread is written:

Two years ago, the British admiralty placed an order for the construction of a sixth-rate frigate with a U.S. based Swedish constructor. The ship was named HMS Excalibur. However, because of some political problems between the U.S. and the British government regarding slavery, the U.S. government has forbidden the delivery of the ship to the English. The constructor then approached the French ambassador to ask if the French Empire would be interested in buying the ship. Napoleon was very happy with this opportunity and accepted the offer.

You could of course argue that this was Napoleon III who ruled France until 1870 :-D

Yes I could! Ok, so its been a while since I've read the first post and that information slipped my mushy cerebrum. I've been using the "Last Post" link to keep up with this thread you see.

I had the same issue with having a short bowsprit when I was building the Xebec. All I did to legthen it was add this piece from the Star Wars B-Wing 30359b.png. Then I added a black lance 3849.1067215652.jpgto further lengthen it.

Mhhh, I never thought about that. Quite smart. You can off course also try lengthening the bow sprit like this, it even is historicly accurate.

Yes it is!

It is even historically accurate to do the same thing to tall masts on larger ships as well, like on a Man-of-War!

Thats how I'm gonna do it on L'Orient. Yesterday I ordered that "special" bow sprit (with the studs on top) on BL. But I didn't think of the rope. I'll add some to my bricklink order.

Mr Bonaparte, could you be so kind to take more pictures of the ship and post them here? I really want to see this fine ship in other angles!

I will post them very soon. The deck is finished, the cabin is as good as ready and I started to add some "details" (bell, torches, steering wheel,...). But I'm waiting for my BL order with some missing parts because some bricks don't have the right color at this moment.

Aha, I see... I'd like to aks you something Boney, from the pictures you use in the first post it is quite hard to see the tumblehome, but the gunports look tilted. So how did you achieved tumblehome? I'm still fighting with this technique on my ship. I first wanted to use slope nr 65, but those only come in 2 x 2. 2 studs between cannons is not enough, and 4 studs is too much for me...

Good Lord no, I would rather die than to put this flag on the ship :-D

This was the French royal standard until the French Revolution (followed by the Napoleonic period), when it was replaced by the tricolor of modern-day France.

So you're going for the tricolour? Is that what you're writing here?

I made a small MLCad-example to demonstrate the "tumblehome" effect in L'Orient.

You know, the real L'orient exploded due to a fire onboard which seeped o the powder room at the battle of the nile... Hope it dosn't repeat its self.

Don't worry commodore,

history never repeats itself :-D

Tumblehome:

Is that a european word or american?

P

Edit:

...

I have a special history book Mr. Norrington.

It doesn't mention the battle of the Nile, no Trafalgar and no Waterloo :-P

LOL! :-D :-D :-D :'-)

My best guess is that the word has a British origin.

Oh. Well Mr. "Bones-apart" (To qoute Master and Commander), I'll have to send you my history book then. I can't have you going around all ignorant about The battle of the nile, The battle of Traflagar, or Waterloo. You'd be a disgrace to all of us Napoleonic war fanatics ;-)

Time to show some progress on L'Orient.

The ship now has a removable deck, cannons, carronades, bell, ...

I have also been working on the masts/platforms/rigging.

Well, see for yourself and let me know what you think.

Your ship is Magnificent! :'-) I like your tumblehome effect and castles too. The entire thing looks very proportionate. Excellent work Bonaparte. *sweet* She shall prove to be formidable at sea.

B,

Excellent vessel so far. *y*

I actually like the red decks. They look pretty cool. Don't think i've seen a deck that color before.

Quick question though:

You have a pic of the cannonades and bell?

Ah, the L'Orient is looking most superb! I will say that the "rail-guns" are an interesting concept. I also agree with phred about the decks. As it is, there's not a whole lot that I can think to further comment on, but you have my gratitude. *y*

On a final note, mr. bonaparte, have you thought about what color your next ship will be? I'm looking for someone to change it up a bit (not that I don't mind that color scheme). (When I accumulate enough pieces, I'm hoping to go with a tan/brown/white color scheme of some sort.)

That ship is very beautiful, the cabin looks magnificent! I also like the door to the cabin. There are some nice details on the deck, like the hatch and the opening, the fence at the wheel and the bell at the mast.

But one thing: I think it looks too red... Although I do think, changing the hatch to black, would get some more contrast. And that I think would be looking better. Are there any chasers on the ship?

Oh, and those girls in your signature are very effective! :-P
