TheDoctor Posted May 4, 2013 Posted May 4, 2013 Awsome, Thats a great idea. Would you mind doing a picture of your print out next to any other tall set you have? I have been fumbling about with a measuring tape this morning to see where mine will fit. That's a brilliant idea! Unfortunately i'm at university so all my precious LEGO sets are at home But if you manage it yourself, you will be amazed! It goes right up to my windowsill, I can't get over how amazing it's going to look when you actually have it in front of you Quote
The Joker1 Posted May 4, 2013 Posted May 4, 2013 (edited) Correct me if I am wrong, but I think LEGO used the old corner castle wall piece ( which I much prefer) on the upper part of the tower. If so, that's a selling point for me. It's hard to say though. Yup im pretty sure they did. Its hard to tell but it looks like it. Edited May 4, 2013 by The Joker1 Quote

If its not broken today . Oh well only 2 months Quote
brodey1 Posted May 5, 2013 Posted May 5, 2013 Honestly, I'm most excited for the large white hand banners that are displayed in the tower. I've been waiting for an acceptable banner for my uruk army to wave. Quote

Fives Posted May 5, 2013 Posted May 5, 2013 I didn't even think about that. I'd love to see your a photo of your uruk army once you have the banners! Yeah, the banners dawned on me too! I'm very happy LEGO did this. With Uruk banners and the one Rohan banner from Helm's Deep, it would be cool to see a MOC of the two armies meeting on a random field of battle. Quote
brodey1 Posted May 5, 2013 Posted May 5, 2013 I didn't even think about that. I'd love to see your a photo of your uruk army once you have the banners! Definitely. I haven't gotten around to putting my army pictures on this site. Quote
8BrickMario Posted May 5, 2013 Posted May 5, 2013 I'm probably gonna hold off on Orthanc now. I'm shifting my focus to the first wave of the Hobbit before the Desolation of Smaug sets come out. Perhaps Orthanc will carry over to Christmas, or, ideally, sooner. Quote
Alcarin Posted May 6, 2013 Posted May 6, 2013 Honestly, I'm most excited for the large white hand banners that are displayed in the tower. I've been waiting for an acceptable banner for my uruk army to wave. Do you know a good way to put those banners on Uruks on a lance? Cos i cannot think of a good way to do such banner on lance to be carried by a figure. Quote
Missing Brick Posted May 6, 2013 Posted May 6, 2013 Generally I prefer not to apply the stickers for many reasons. (always crooked, prevents brick reuse, mint sticker sheet increases resale value etc). Anyway, I think you'd be better off printing your own white hand banner on paper since it will look more like a real cloth banner. I used the following method: 1) find a white hand jpg you like on google images 2) use paintshop to resize and print the image. Make the black border oversized so you have room to cut a frayed edge with scissors, 3) now use paintshop to mirror the image 4) Using trial and error, try to align the mirror image on the other side of the paper - so you have a double sided banner / flag 5) Cut out with scissors 6) Use a pin to make mounting holes in the paper. 7) Build a mount using lego bar/torch holders/arms/clips etc Quote
deskp Posted May 6, 2013 Posted May 6, 2013 Personally I think homemade things does not mix well with lego, esapcially when its made with paper. Official elemest are always preferable with me. One solution is get better at applying stickers. Do you know a good way to put those banners on Uruks on a lance? Cos i cannot think of a good way to do such banner on lance to be carried by a figure. You obviously only need half of the connectors, but it looks better with both I think. Quote
Alfadas Posted May 6, 2013 Posted May 6, 2013 Wow deskp, It looks very simple, so I might give it a try. THANKS!!! Quote
Missing Brick Posted May 6, 2013 Posted May 6, 2013 Here are some home-made banners Orc Band by Legoogel, on Flickr And here's my work-in-progress back wall: A back for Orthanc - WIP by Legoogel, on Flickr Quote
Lynx Posted May 6, 2013 Posted May 6, 2013 That Uruk-hai army looks fantastic! The banners are superior to the official version and the different angles of the spears are strikingly reminiscent of the movie scene. I love the leader signalling to attack and the drummer and guy with the crossbow, too. Quote
Eurolock Posted May 7, 2013 Posted May 7, 2013 Your back wall is coming along very nicely. Fantastic banners too. Incidentally, having looked closely at the rear view of Orthanc, I think that it will be possible to substitute some of the new arch pieces that are used internally with other pieces. This would free up some of the new arches to use on the back wall. Quote
8BrickMario Posted May 7, 2013 Posted May 7, 2013 That back wall is very impressive! While the model certainly won't be built like that, it looks like someone took off the back wall! Excellent job, Missing Brick! I'm also jealous of your Uruk army...... Quote
Missing Brick Posted May 7, 2013 Posted May 7, 2013 Thanks guys. Good point about the arches Eurolock. At the moment I'm using http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItem.asp?P=88292 which looks OK - but you're right, I can probably swap things around once I get the set. In the designer video they said they used 26 new arches - so should be pretty easy to swap a pair to use for the back wall. I'm just waiting for my thirty 10x1 slopes to arrive now, so I can finish the snot base section. This thing takes a huge number of bricks and plates. I thought I had alot of black bricks - but nowhere near enough without some major bricklink orders. Quote
Banjo Posted May 8, 2013 Posted May 8, 2013 Wow, that's pretty awesome! I bet it'll be a fortune in Australia, and I wish it came with more Orcs... but it's probably my favourite looking LOTR set they've made (much better than the spartan-looking (half a ) Black Gate set, IMO). Plus, Brad Dourif minifig = awesome! :) Quote
Javert Posted May 8, 2013 Posted May 8, 2013 hey guys! I love what everyone's thinking about doing with Orthanc when it's released! Does anybody think this set could be made into a whole tower if you took two sets and made it modular? (so that it would still have all it's floors, and much more space on them too instead of everything crammed in) I know it would cost a lot of money to get two, but I'm thinking the option might be there! It seems like it's better suited to just add a back like Missing Brick is doing. Plus it's a lot cheaper. If you buy two you would need to mod the top and it might look too long on the sides. Quote
Missing Brick Posted May 8, 2013 Posted May 8, 2013 The complete tower has 12 faces in total. The set provides 7 faces, so you need to build 5 more faces to complete the tower. So a 2nd set would only provide enough bricks to complete the tower plus enough to add another floor. If you wanted to increase the diameter, say by 2 studs all the way up, it's gonna take alot more than 2 sets. Personally I'm quite happy with the size of the set (it's huge!) The bottom 3 floors all have a decent amount of floor space. Quote
Knight Solaire Posted May 8, 2013 Posted May 8, 2013 I like the look of this set a lot! The designers clearly put a lot of effort into it and it is up to the same quality as the other LOTR setst. I also think I prefer to have an interior rather than a fully enclosed tower with nothing inside (although I would have loved both). Quote
Lynx Posted May 8, 2013 Posted May 8, 2013 Wow, that's pretty awesome! I bet it'll be a fortune in Australia, [...] It's 'only' 80 dollars more than the US price, and if you order by August, you save 45 AUD on shipping. http://shop.lego.com/en-AU/The-Tower-of-Orthanc-10237 Quote
