8BrickMario Posted April 29, 2013 Posted April 29, 2013 (edited) Wait, you have it? How? EDIT: Oh, wait. You're attempting to build it from the pics...silly me. Edited April 29, 2013 by 8BrickMario Quote
Missing Brick Posted April 29, 2013 Posted April 29, 2013 You should post picture updates on your build! I'd really like to see. OK. Will do. It's not much to look at yet. I'm waiting for some bricklink orders to arrive. Quote
Ajax Posted April 30, 2013 Posted April 30, 2013 I have to say, this could be the best set Lego has ever released. I love it. Im trying to think of a way to display it in my City layout, I may turn it into some kind of ride at my amusement park?? I like the eagle, Its going into my zoo. Quote
8BrickMario Posted April 30, 2013 Posted April 30, 2013 Well, a lot of people are complaining that the Eagle is not so great due to its (small) size. It's more suitable for a zoo than LotR at any rate. Quote
Str0ngbad Posted April 30, 2013 Posted April 30, 2013 Well, a lot of people are complaining that the Eagle is not so great due to its (small) size. It's more suitable for a zoo than LotR at any rate. Yes but a 'fitting' eagle would almost need it's own set like a Triceratops or T-Rex. I know the scale is way off but I wouldn't want to spend $50 on an eagle. At the size most people are wanting, a brick built eagle makes much more sense. Quote
8BrickMario Posted April 30, 2013 Posted April 30, 2013 (edited) Some people are recommending the Creator eagle, the Fierce Flyer, but some pieces, like the tooth pieces at the end of its tail, aren't in/hard to come by in brown (or at least I think they are). The only other problem with this is that the Eagle in 10237 is properly scaled with Orthanc. It is awful with a minifigure, though. A minifigure-scaled Eagle would be too large in comparison to Orthanc. The only solution is a 5-foot tall, 6 cm wide Orthanc with the Fierce Flyer! EDIT: I just realized that this press release has been top of the frontpage for a while now, compared to the other breaking news articles I've seen. This one's had a long run, as they go. Doctor_ocks Posted April 30, 2013 Posted April 30, 2013 Here's a link to the fierce flyer with a couple of lotr figs for scale I took a while ago. http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8215/8293508522_9b9375eb91.jpg I think it fits well, but will definatley be too big compared to Orthanc. Quote
Darth Lurtz Posted April 30, 2013 Posted April 30, 2013 (edited) The colors on the Fierce Flyer are also too vibrant for the theme. Edited April 30, 2013 by Darth Lurtz Quote
Doctor_ocks Posted April 30, 2013 Posted April 30, 2013 The colors on the Fierce Flyer are also too vibrant for the theme. I agree. As was hinted at previously, some of the whites need to be changed to browns. Quote
deskp Posted April 30, 2013 Posted April 30, 2013 The fierce flyer might be scaled to the minifgs well, but not really to anything else. Quote
Slobey Posted April 30, 2013 Posted April 30, 2013 (edited) Nice! Shop @ Home Australia has free shipping on orders over $150 till the end of August. At least that won't be another $60 on top of what will no doubt be an already hefty pricetag.............. It's listed for pre-order at $279.00 http://shop.lego.com/en-AU/The-Tower-of-Orthanc-10237 Edited April 30, 2013 by Slobey Quote
Slobey Posted April 30, 2013 Posted April 30, 2013 Went to put my order in a few minutes ago and it's been taken off pre-order for some reason Quote

I know the scale is way off but I wouldn't want to spend $50 on an eagle. At the size most people are wanting, a brick built eagle makes much more sense. See I rather get less and get quality than get more and not proper quality, and Eagle is definetly in the 2nd bracket of the 2 above... You can get an eagle, but not an eagle worthy of being an EAGLE. I would rather we get NO Eagle and no Gandalf and rather get more Orcs Quote
The_Creator Posted April 30, 2013 Posted April 30, 2013 So awesome looking! I wish I could find $20 to spend on one set, but I can still dream of getting it. Quote
Deathleech Posted April 30, 2013 Posted April 30, 2013 I think the current eagle would be fine if it were slightly bigger or a really good mold. Unfortunately it's neither. Lego doesn't have to make the Eagle to minifigure scale as that would be huge indeed, but they could of at least made the body bigger than a horse? I think the body should have been roughly the same size as a Cave Troll (not the same shape obviously), or even slightly smaller athan that would have been fine. As is it just comically small with a minifigure on it. Also, ANY articulation besides the wings would have been great. In the legs, the neck, or even just allowing the beak to open and close? As is the Eagle has an awkward pose and other than it's wing's there is nothing you can do about it. Heck, Lego didn't even bother painting it's feet which just looks bad. Quote
Commander Turtle Posted April 30, 2013 Posted April 30, 2013 (edited) The eagle is fine, look at the final shot where we see all the parts from above. It's got a big wingspan, significantly wider than the brick-built ent. Any bigger and it would look silly with the tower. I think the eagle is a cleverly thought out compromise - if you want something to minifig scale, go build your own, but this one is the only way we'll get one in scale with the tower. Alternatively, let's all complain about minor faults on an incredible overall set. Edited April 30, 2013 by helloearthling Quote
The_Chosen_1 Posted April 30, 2013 Posted April 30, 2013 Alternatively, let's all complain about minor faults on an incredible overall set. That's what AFOLs do best! The scale doesn't bother me too badly, but I agree with Deathleech that more articulation would have been very welcome. Quote
Deathleech Posted April 30, 2013 Posted April 30, 2013 (edited) And what's your point? Ents aren't terribly wide, they are tall. Look at the picture of the Ent next to Orthanc in the designer video, the Ent is almost 1/3 as tall as Orthanc (it's 9 inches compared to Orthanc's 28). The Eagle has a decent wing span but the body is ridiculously small. It's smaller than a horse or a Cave Troll, which in the films Eagles dwarf. I don't think anyone wants a to minifigure scale Eagle, but something slightly bigger would of been nice. They could of even doubled the body size, kept the wings as is and it would of looked terrific with minifigures on it AND next to Orthanc. I mean, can you honestly look at this picture and tell me it doesn't look silly at all EDIT: Here is a super quick photoshop job I did to show how much better the Eagle could of looked, while still being good minifigure AND Orthanc scale. Wings were increased by roughly 20% and body 80%: Edited April 30, 2013 by Deathleech Quote
kinggregus Posted April 30, 2013 Posted April 30, 2013 Great comparison. I cannot look at the small eagle anymore! While it did not bother me at first. It looks extremely small now. Quote
Lynx Posted April 30, 2013 Posted April 30, 2013 I wish the eagle would have come in the size photoshopped by Deatleech, but I still like it. The tower interior and exterior are stunning enough for me to want this set. It's a great display piece, although the ent will only find itself hidden in a box. It reminds me of those LEGO actionfigures which I equally dislike. I'm just not sure if I want to buy this set from the LEGO shop Australia for 280-350 AUD plus 45 AUD for shipping and handling. Simply not worth it, I guess. Quote
8BrickMario Posted April 30, 2013 Posted April 30, 2013 Excellent photoshop, Deathleech! It looks much better that way. Quote
Gryphon Ink Posted May 1, 2013 Posted May 1, 2013 I don't see the problem everyone is complaining about. The piece in question is a wonderful rendition of an adorable baby Misty Mountain Eagle. And Gandalf was SO nice to use his magic to pretend the eaglet was actually carrying him aloft! Gwaihir must be so proud! Quote
Niku Posted May 1, 2013 Posted May 1, 2013 I wish the eagle to be molded with such detail as the last dinosaurs from the Dino Theme. Quote
