Lynx Posted May 1, 2013 Posted May 1, 2013 Nice! Shop @ Home Australia has free shipping on orders over $150 till the end of August. At least that won't be another $60 on top of what will no doubt be an already hefty pricetag.............. It's listed for pre-order at $279.00 http://shop.lego.com...f-Orthanc-10237 Thanks for the info! I always considered 300 AUD as absolute upper limit for Orthanc. Without the extra shipping cost, I might just buy this set. NZ ripped off as usual, $400NZD Sigh. That is ridiculous! You'll be better off spending a week in Australia and buying it here. Quote
Legonardo Posted May 1, 2013 Posted May 1, 2013 yeah NZs getting heaps of crap from TLG recently. nice set though! not getting it Quote
BlueberryWaffles Posted May 1, 2013 Posted May 1, 2013 NZ ripped off as usual, $400NZD Sigh. You know, being the land of Middle Earth itself, I'd think you'd get cheaper prices on these sets..... Quote
Cammo Posted May 1, 2013 Posted May 1, 2013 (edited) Wow 230 euro here in Belgium. I guess I'll have to visit the LEGO store in Lille this summer. I can get it for 30 euro less there (or in other words, I can get the Elrond set 'for free'.) Edited May 1, 2013 by Cammo Quote
Deathleech Posted May 1, 2013 Posted May 1, 2013 You know, being the land of Middle Earth itself, I'd think you'd get cheaper prices on these sets..... That's not how it works. Since they live in NZ where the films were shot, that makes the sets even MORE appealing which in turn means higher prices! Quote
Maximillian365 Posted May 2, 2013 Posted May 2, 2013 Some truly awesome pictures there!!! Overall, I think there are quite a few things the designers couldve have improved on. First of all, the Tower of Orthanc should be enclosed, so it looks like a full tower, instead of only having one half of it, split down the middle. If they wanted to show the interior, then why couldn't they make another half, connect it to the first half and swing both halves out so that the interior could be revealed. Nevertheless, the tower has some great details. Also, I think the Great Eagle should most definitely be better, and the ent? Well, that looks great. I think the real highlight of this set would be the minifigures. Saruman and Grima look awesome, and we finally get Gandalf the Grey with hair instead of hat. ( ) The two orcs still seem good as before. Overall, it seems like a great set!!! Quote
8BrickMario Posted May 2, 2013 Posted May 2, 2013 Why isn't the tower enclosed? P R I C E ! An enclosed tower would be ridiculously expensive. I don't mind. I won't use it as a centerpiece and will have the open side to the wall when I don't want to see it. Quote

Maximillian365 Posted May 2, 2013 Posted May 2, 2013 NZ ripped off as usual, $400NZD Sigh. I really have to agree with you. After all, I live in New Zealand and it's real obvious that Lego prices don't favour licensed themes. Quote
BrickBob Studpants Posted May 2, 2013 Posted May 2, 2013 As with the Hobbit sets, TLG provides us with atmospheric shots of the set (via theonering.net): http://www.theonering.net/torwp/2013/04/26/71149-lego-unveils-the-tower-of-orthanc/# A few inaccuracies here and there (e.g. Grima being there at the time Gandalf arrives), but the pictures do look great. I really can't wait for this set Quote
Legonardo Posted May 2, 2013 Posted May 2, 2013 legos always been an expensive hobby, but in most cases (especially with these tolkein sets) licenced sets are unbelievable. take the US price, double it, thats about what youll be paying for it in NZ dollars, now picture this, the exchange rate from US to NZ is 1 : 1.18, so why are we paying 1.7 times the price we should? Its cheaper to order from teh states and pay for shipping with the large sets, and if you get charged customs its still the same price. (non-licence isn't quite as bad, but gandalf arrives was $30 and HD $250, I mean really!) anyway i should stop ranting about my bad luck... in the vid what do they mean by "and we are all fans of the universe" ? that confused me Quote
Lynx Posted May 2, 2013 Posted May 2, 2013 in the vid what do they mean by "and we are all fans of the universe" ? that confused me I thought they referred to the Middle Earth "universe". Quote
Deathleech Posted May 2, 2013 Posted May 2, 2013 Ya, he meant all three designers are big fans of Tolkien/LotR. Quote
Kez Posted May 3, 2013 Posted May 3, 2013 One of the things that I like most about this set is that lego have incorporated different scenes into this awesome set, LOTR Death Star indeed Quote
deskp Posted May 3, 2013 Posted May 3, 2013 LOTR Death Star indeed Except for the minifigure aspect of that.... Quote
Kez Posted May 3, 2013 Posted May 3, 2013 Except for the minifigure aspect of that.... I know, that is the only bad thing about it IMO, I would have liked it if there was more uruk hais and a few more orcs but then I suppose that would've increased the price Quote

And it's not like they left anyone important out. If you want more uruks, there's a set for that. Minas Tirith could offer a much larger minifigure selection. Denethor, Gandalf, Squire Pippin, Faramir, Gondor Boromir, coronation Aragorn, Arwen, hobbits, etc. If TLG did it, they could go nuts. July can't get here soon enough. Quote
Kez Posted May 3, 2013 Posted May 3, 2013 July can't get here soon enough. It seems ages away but in reality it really isn't, hopefully there will be some kind of VIP promotion so we can get it a month earlier (like with some of the modulars) Quote
Lynx Posted May 3, 2013 Posted May 3, 2013 July is earlier than I expected for Orthanc. In hindsight I'm glad for the late press release. Imagine we'd have known about the specifics of this set since last December! What a long wait that would have been. :) Quote
StoutFiles Posted May 4, 2013 Posted May 4, 2013 (edited) Looks incredible. I just hope they release Barad-dur with the exact same height so I can put them next to each other as the Two Towers. (One could do the same with Minas Morgul but I highly doubt that'll ever be a set). Edited May 4, 2013 by StoutFiles Quote

I guess that they refer as fans of the Tolkien Universe. Quote
TheDoctor Posted May 4, 2013 Posted May 4, 2013 I actually printed out a picture of the Orthanc at 1:1 scale just to see how big it actually was....My god its huge! Especially when you put a minifig next to it! Quote

Especially when you put a minifig next to it! Awsome, Thats a great idea. Would you mind doing a picture of your print out next to any other tall set you have? I have been fumbling about with a measuring tape this morning to see where mine will fit. Quote
branolego Posted May 4, 2013 Posted May 4, 2013 Correct me if I am wrong, but I think LEGO used the old corner castle wall piece ( which I much prefer) on the upper part of the tower. If so, that's a selling point for me. It's hard to say though. Quote
