Hi, this is my first post, and it is about my first decent MOC after about 15 yrs of pause in LEGO Technic building.

I Have all the old Technic's saved, and in use with my kids nowadays. I bought few new kits to see what Technics are today (and still great they are). Some might recognize what kits I have used to build this MOC (The bigger models at least).

The idea for this Truck originally was trying to build 8258 Crane truck (I do not own one) from instructions. I did not have all the parts for it, so I needed to improvise. After building the crane part first, I was not happy with manually handled telescope boom. So I motorized it and had some more length to it. At this stage I got hungry, and decided to make it (allmost?) MOC, because I wanted more features than original. After all from the original 8258 Instruction, I only used sections making the basic structure of the cabin, and the crane part, both modified quite much. All the rest is my own design.

Specs:

4 motors, all IR controlled and 3 of them changeable functions with gearbox ( options marked with / )

motor 1 for forward and reverse / Turning the table

motor 2 for steering / main boom

motor 3 for outriggers / 2nd boom

motor 4 for telescope alone

Suspension on 2 axles

Length ?To be measured?

Width ??

Hihgt min max ??-??

Weight with batteries: 2200g

Part count: 2219 (can be different, due possible, small human erros)

The Truck drives from the middle axle with differential. Acceleration and stopping is nice and smooth using 2 white friction gears in the transmission. Trucks speed is very good for this application. Steering was quite success, the turning circle is very small. The most best thing I was able to pull out, are the outtriggers. They come out, and after it go down and wise verse. This is possible by mechanical design. In general, the truck needs manual inputs only for power on/off and changing gear to to drive mode/lift mode. Truck is extremely playable....As you can note, I made very simple hook, and added axles an gears to tractor wheels, with them its very pleasing to toy with. With the boom in max length, the bigger tractor wheel rises without any problem.

Things to improve:

The crane rotation goes full 360 but the motor wire is too short to lead it nicely. It would require extension cable.

The steering and the main boom lift directions are crossed, The direction always must be reversed from the transmitter after mode change.

Bigger V8 engine would be more appropriate.

More unique color scheme, but with my bricks not possible.

Pictures:

One panel is missing from the boom on the pictures, Noticed that after upload. Sorry. Also I have made mademodifications after these photos were shot., for example the suspension.

Did that show up on this website or did it show up on brickshelf?

It showed up trying to insert image to post. I have the pictures on Google Drive. (yes, I have made the pics public)

I Get them visible on the post when typing, but after trying send or review the post, the error message appears.

Can you see them here? --> https://drive.google...YkU&usp=sharing

@ Tech-nick: Welcome to Eurobricks! :classic: You can read why your pictures are not uploading correctly by reading this Eurobricks topic (for newcomers).

Thanks, nice to be here :classic:

Yes I did read the instructions, but the broblem still remains.

Does this one picture work as a link? (works for me, but making sure it works for others)

--> https://lh6.googleus...BBrnJAg7Ag=w800

Edit. Seems like the forum needs the ".Jpg" extension to the end of pictures path. Dunno how to make it happen with Google drive.

I like the model, it's really realistic and I'm impressed that you've managed to motorise so much of it. I like the linking oof the three gearbox elements, that's such a simple and obvious thing (but hard to arrange in many models). Your steering is also cunning.

Any chance of a video?

Yes, the google folder works for me. But the image links don't, I suspect because google have worked hard to break deep linking.

Thanks for your comment :classic:

I will make video later. Hope at least the youtube works for me

Have to think about alternative strorage for the images, brickshelf maybe for now. I would really like to get them visible on the post. Its much more representative and easy for viewers.

Edit. Picture problem: SORTED.

@ Tech-nick: You should consider posting your pictures on Flickr.com. The first 200 images are free, and one can easily select the 800x600 pixel size (the nominal maximum size allowed here at Eurobricks). One can also easily organize your pictures into Sets, add captions and tags, detailed descriptions, etc. Brickshelf often takes DAYS to get moderated and have your images "made public", and the length of the descriptions are limited to just a few lines. Try Flickr -- you'll like it! :classic:

Thanks for your comments.

You'll have to keep waiting for the video, truck has been under construction (again). This time I added suspension to front and middle axles. To do this, I got rid of motor turning the engine pistons. It was bit annoying anyway because it made noise all the time when truck was powered.

Also lifted the rear axle, it looks good and it would have been very difficult to add suspension on it.

Thanks guys. :sweet:

@ Paul B, What ideas did you get?

BTW: What WIP stands for? (Lost with terminology)

I Tough this was finished model, but seems that ideas and evolving does not stop until I run out of bricks...

This update includes hatches were pads for outriggers can be stored. Hatches are on both sides. To do this, I changed the gearbox stick location to upwards. Its easier now to switch mode too.

Sorry for the crappy photos.

Looks great, very functional :sweet:

WIP stands for Work In Progress, so something that you are currently building

Some small updates, I did not like the looks of the rear, rebuild it + added some details. Also did not like the mode changer stick, some made push'n pull system.

OK, now I must leave this behind, I now consider this model finished. No WIPping anymore. I took last photo shoot for the truck outside, before taking it apart. There are some small details added, like the panel on 2nd boom. (With big Technic logo on it, pretty neat eh..) I liked to build this a lot, but show must go on, if I want to discover something new, this must come apart. Building and problem solving is my main source of joy with Lego Technic.

I have the LDD files for it, so If I ever revisit this, I won't have to start all over again.

See pictures below, and links for the LDDs, if somebody wish to check this out, inside to outside.

If somebody spots something he like or not, feel free to comment. I'm sure I still have lots to learn. Also you can report flaws in LDDs, I'm happy to correct and/or revise (slightly). I'm pretty sure there is missing a connector peg, or dozen.

Or if you perhaps want to build this, Im happy to help. And really like to see your angle of approach to color theme! (My was limited to.. well, limited.)

2 of 3 Front part of chassis: http://www.brickshel...rontchassv1.lxf

3 of 3 Cabin, payload space and the side panels with outriggers pads holders: http://www.brickshel...p_sidepanv1.lxf

Notes for builders:

There are parts off the truck in the LDDs, LDD would not let put them on. In real life they go without any problem. They are quite obvious.

Also some parts are off because they cant be put there before putting assemblies together. Like no steering pinion gear to axle before main chassis fitted to front chassis.

Use 4 pcs of rubber bands for the outriggers. they should be JUST and ONLY so tight that they can lift the legs up. See closely the pictures to see where they should be.

Edit. Please use 24t friction gears on drive-transmission, I drew the double Z24 gears WHITE for note in LDD.

And if you have a motor extension cable, please use it for the telescope boom.

Wiring is wery tight if not leaded propely.

Thanks for posting Rishab :classic:

Below is image of the truck transmission. I made this illustration while back but didn't upload it then. But here it is now.

I know, the instructions generated by the LDD are almost useless :hmpf_bad: I wish I had 2 weeks spare time to make real instructions...

But I try to help you in your build the best I can.

Are you going to try different colors? (I hope you are, IMO the colors I HAD TO USE looked awful) And if you have lot of flat panels, build the cargo bed with them instead, might look better.

I have lot of new parts in my collection now, I might make this again some day, with better looks.
