hey everyone (my first post)...

I bought this one the other day. took me about 3 hours to assemble. The WORST part was the damn cockpit sticker :/ had to use the second one after bad luck with the first one. I guess the cutting off the middle part (leaving just the frames) is a nice and quite good idea...

either way, I didn't have the old UCS X-Wing so I can't really compare but after being a bit "meh" about this set, it grew on me. It's actually quite swooshable and looks pretty good..

And it's big! I was really amazed when I saw it in the Lego Store.

The cockpit sticker seems to be a major bummer. I will carefully cut the sticker or find another solution (was thinking about painting it, but this might not be as accurate as the sticker).

There's a topic somewhere around here about applying it more precisely using water, if you want to try that... here it is!

it is big tho it don't really feel that big really... I think the B-Wing UCS feels a bit more massive comparing to the X-Wing....

Great, thanks! I will look into both techniques

Probably, but the X-Wing is far more iconic and looks way better (imho).

Please don't join just to promote your review on another site. There are already lots of pictures and tutorials on the subject of applying the sticker on EB. Thanks.

just wanted to say a belated thank you for this review. This is probably the main set out there that I dont have but realyl want (thats readily available). But I have been changing my mind in recent weeks so I decided to dig out some reviews. I think this review might just have made my mind up to make this set my next big purchase. Thanks for the review.

I need to know how you are able to make such thorough reviews and how you use underlines to separate sections of the review? Do you write out the whole review on word beforehand? And how do you post such high resolution photos, since the review section can only have 400x200 or something like that.

Epic review. I wonder why (if) anyone has complained about the small-ish engine intakes, yet? It's a very beautiful set, but personally I prefer Psiaki's minifig-scale version for its way more exact shapes and proportions, although it contains a few 'illegal' building techniques.

Anyway, I rather enjoyed the build-in-progress pictures in your review - gives a very detailed impression of the set without having to build it yourself.

Compared to the actual studio models the droid is only very slightly too small, it's just that we are used to seeing the droids massively oversized on Lego models (and rightly so on the system scale models). A 4 stud wide head would be way too big. Here are some good reference shots for comparison http://www.modelermagic.com/?p=5942

It's easy to say things like the engines are too small, the body is too wide, but these things are just a consequence of the Lego system. There are no suitable 5 stud wide cylinder parts for example to make the engines bigger. The only thing I don't understand is why they made the windscreen completely the wrong shape. It should slope inwards towards the nose, not outwards. I guess it was a consequence of the way they built the nose but I can't help feeling they could have done that bit better.

The only way they could do this is if the front fuselage would have the hexagonal shape, too. It's still a gorgeous set, though, accuracy aside, and I'd say Lego did a great job with building an X-Wing and still retaining the lego-feel. It's waaay better than the system scale versions they've released, that's for sure.

Sorry to bump this topic, but this is an awesome review. Does anyone have any pictures of this model with 10175 as I want to see if they would look good together.

Thanks

Having recently purchased the 7191 I am now torn as to my favorite set. I only bring it up because of the poll question, but they both have high points to them. I have to give it to the 10240 simply because of the wing mechanics...

Thanks Rufus for the awesome review/post. Because of it, I went out and bought the kit and enjoyed some feelings building it that I haven't felt since I was a kid...

Not sure if it was intentional but my OCD picked up on this. Regarding the light-grey round single lego in the picture, I believe there is supposed to be (2) of them stacked. (Manual #2 pg 24)
