wondermonkey Posted July 1, 2013 Posted July 1, 2013 I've never built an engine with with 3 axles on power functions but as someone who has bricklinked this engine, I can tell you it looks fantastic. That being said, I've made a few modifications of my own including the nose. I'm having a hard time finding decent stickers and thinking about using Microscale O guage decals if I can find them somewhere other than their website because they don't ship to me. I'll put pictures up after "ronenson" has a chance to post his as it's his creation. Quote
Hey Joe Posted July 1, 2013 Posted July 1, 2013 Yes but it is hard and might require part modification. EDIT: http://www.eurobrick...showtopic=57085 Hey, thanks! I had missed that article the first time through this post. Joe Quote
wondermonkey Posted July 1, 2013 Posted July 1, 2013 Oops, I missed the part 2 topic somehow. I love this locomotive! It was my first multi-order Bricklink wanted list project and it was well worth it. I have it on a shelf with my Maersk engine and it dwarfs it but the scale seems about right. I ordered and built it exactly as is from LDD, however, I am planning on running it on 9V rails. Therefore, I don't have the infrared sensor in the nose. It feels a little heavier to push by hand than the Maersk but less than the Emerald Night with its tender car if that helps give an idea of the size of it. Quote
ronenson Posted July 1, 2013 Author Posted July 1, 2013 How the nose is done, and other changes to the original design, see the new LDD file: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/3664856/SD70M_v12.lxf I've changed the nose and tail to make the cheese slopes smoother, I've straightened out the dark-bley grills, and I've removed some internal parts that turned out to be pretty useless. Building the real thing really straightens out the glitches. Quote
zephyr1934 Posted July 2, 2013 Posted July 2, 2013 Wow, the lightning zig-zag is fantastic. As for making three axle trucks, the easiest way is to use an empty wheel holder for the third axle, either in the middle or on the end (the latter being the only feasible option with a motor in the truck). galacticslave Posted July 8, 2013 Posted July 8, 2013 Do the Microscale O guage "Building America" decals fit on this loco? Quote
JopieK Posted July 8, 2013 Posted July 8, 2013 I'm busy trying to create stickers for it and then release within two weeks or so BNSF / Santa Fe (Super Chief) / Union Pacific stickers, most on transparent with white ink backing, the fans will include metallic and some santa fe stickers too. The BNSF and Santa Fe stickers are finished but need to produce more of them (that is not very hard but last school year I was very busy with teaching and finishing my masters so getting our new printing machine up and running was a challenge ;)) Quote

wondermonkey Posted July 9, 2013 Posted July 9, 2013 (edited) Could I get a message too? I will buy a set for the UP. Thanks! Edited July 9, 2013 by wondermonkey Quote
galacticslave Posted July 18, 2013 Posted July 18, 2013 I'd love some UP stickers, please let me know when they're ready. Quote
wondermonkey Posted August 17, 2013 Posted August 17, 2013 OK, so I finally put HO model decals (from eBay) on it and LOVE the way it looks. I bought O scale first but they seemed to be a little too big for some reason. While I'm happy with the way they look, I'm nervous about rubbing off the decals, they seem a little flimsy. However, I would honestly say that I like it more than the Maersk engine... Thank you ronenson for a fantastic design! Quote
ronenson Posted August 17, 2013 Author Posted August 17, 2013 I like the use of the decals wondermonkey. Very nice result. I'm glad you liked my design. Quote
wondermonkey Posted August 18, 2013 Posted August 18, 2013 Thanks, I'm worried about them flaking off. I've never really built models but the directions on the decal sheet describe using some sort of clear coat to cover and protect them. I am ok with making them permanently stuck on the pieces but I am worried I'll turn what looks nice now into a disaster if I start to mess with it. There's also the decision of using glossy v. matte clearcoat... Quote
JopieK Posted August 18, 2013 Posted August 18, 2013 you better print them on vinyl then of course! If I have time next week I will post more images, but in a different topic since this is a GP-38 and no SD70M :) I have uploaded them to our site b.t.w. but they are targeted to a GP-38, but of course I could make a different sheet for a SD70 with the 'building america' stickers and the flags. There are in fact only a few UP 38 engines that that have the wings to the front, most only have the shield. Quote
wondermonkey Posted August 19, 2013 Posted August 19, 2013 Yeah JopieK, I'm sure your stickers are a lot more future proof! Also, I think the wings on mine are a little too small... I checked out your store and wow... that GP38 sticker sheet is great! I would definitely buy an SD70M sheet, I might buy the GP sheet just for the minifig overalls!!! so cool. Quote
JopieK Posted August 19, 2013 Posted August 19, 2013 I have discussed it with ronenson and will try to also bring out a SD70 compatible version that includes the flags and "building america" :) can take a week or so since I need to work again (vacation is over). Quote
wondermonkey Posted August 19, 2013 Posted August 19, 2013 Great! I'm looking forward to it when you get some time. They really look like quality stickers. Is there any way to include a thin red stripe that continues around the back side of the locomotive (about 1 plate thick)? Just a thought but I don't really know what's all involved in making stickers like this. Quote
JopieK Posted August 19, 2013 Posted August 19, 2013 only my imagination is probably the limit, there is a whole lot possible (although I think I don't know all possibilities yet). I will have a good look at the original trains first. You did not mean the zig-zag did you?! Quote
wondermonkey Posted August 19, 2013 Posted August 19, 2013 Nope, I love ronenson's brick built zig-zag. I was talking about the back of the engine with the snot cheese-wedges. It would just be a nice finishing touch I guess. Quote
LEGO Train 12 Volts Posted January 15, 2014 Posted January 15, 2014 I soldered up a custom battery pack to fit inside of it, using 6 AAA batteries. This sounds good ...may I see some pictures of your solution? Quote
JopieK Posted January 15, 2014 Posted January 15, 2014 well, not too complex, one could connect two of those in series e.g.: Link Quote
ronenson Posted January 15, 2014 Author Posted January 15, 2014 This sounds good ...may I see some pictures of your solution? Here's a picture of the solution: I used two of these: http://brigatti.nl/contents/nl/search.php?searchphrase=bh431a It's tight. When searching for these, it's important to make sure the height of these battery holders is at most 15.5 mm to be able to fit it into a 2 stud wide space. Most holders with a lid won't fit because of that. Length required: 14 studs. Quote
LEGO Train 12 Volts Posted January 16, 2014 Posted January 16, 2014 Many thanks for the hint! You've realized a beautiful model and a usefull solution! Quote
Doom2099 Posted January 16, 2014 Posted January 16, 2014 This a really great MOC! The colors and striping really make it look like the real thing. Quote
