I am curious to why you feel it "sucks"?

Well, the models you mentioned are great models. They came out at a time when there was only 9V around. Yet the locomotives didn't contain a motor - and that sucked, too.

I'm not saying the entire set sucks, I like a few models that are shown on the box. I'm just disappointed that no motor is included despite the box clearly showing models with a motor. That's irritating.

I'm curious, which ones are yours? X-D

Well, I'm very positive about this box. Finally something I can buy that will be used for exactly what it was ment to be. I LOVE the fact that there is no motor included, I am a 12v guy. You say you can easely buy these parts of bricklink? The cheapest red train door on ebay is $8. Four of these would already set you back $32. Still think this box is a bad deal?

Last but not least, I'll think I'll learn a geat deal of techniques for these ten train builders.

I'll be getting this, I only hope it won't be

:-D i assume is in reguards to my post HLC ;-)

on closer inspection it appears the right train doors were already in production, and are quite plentiful at 3 bucks each here. however, the left train door seems to be the gimic piece for the set at 8 for a new one here. however, there are 28 available new ones, so im not sure if this piece was already in production or not...

im just happy i don't need red train doors, so i don't have to spend 100 bucks on 2-4 pieces :-D

all that aside, i think my comment was that there are not too many new-to-the-hobby exciting chase pieces in this set. and, being both an aquaraiders fan and train fan, i would rather have all the new fun pieces in 7775 @ $70 than this (for even the same amount).

And you didn't go back to take detailed pictures of the box!

For Shame!

Oops, sorry I didn't reply sooner. Unfortunately I didn't have my camera with me, and the Lego store is nearly two hours drive from where I live and the other side of a toll bridge, so there was no way I could get back. I only get to visit once or twice a year. :-(

As for the set, looking at the inventory there are 12 pairs of wheels and three double bogey bases. That's three wagons you can build at one time. Or two double bogey wagons and two four wheel wagons. If I had the money, I'd love to get it, add a motor and see if I can come up with an engine and four wagons/carriages just from this set. X-D

  • 10020 had 436 elements and cost $40. It did not include a motor.
  • 10133 had 407 elements and cost $40. It did not include a motor.
  • 10170 had 366 elements and cost $40. It did not include a motor.

10183 has slightly more than 2.5x the parts of 10020, 10133 or 10070 (which was not a locomotive) and costs 2.5x more. Seems to me the price point and content is pretty consistent with the last three LEGO Train releases (not counting the RC trains). In fact, there are enough train components in 10183 to fully outfit 3 wagon plates with wheels, buffers, and bogies and you get a bunch of airplane windows with glass, train windows with glass, 4 sliding box car doors, and 2 pair of red train doors. So the train specific content of this compare very favorably previous sets.

well i don't like it because some kids see the box and think "oh look mummy you can make a whole train with this and it's even got a motor on"so the childs mum buys it because it looks like you can make tons and on the main picture the train has a motor!!!! *n* *n* *n*

Well it is 16 + so little kids like you are not allowed to buy it.

Furthermore it is clearly stated on the box that no track or engine is included.

The idea behind the set is great, but from what I've seen from those pics, the models seem a little too basic. Am I the only one who thinks so?

I'll wait until we get some larger pics to make a final judgement, but they don't look nearly as detailed as the Super Chief or BNSF.

I am not really sure about this set myself. At first glance it seems great, but then a few ugly details rear thier heads. One of the major things, is the lack of minfigs that were present with most of the other locomotives, like the BNSF.

Also for the price this time around TLG could have thrown in a motor. I understand that there are already a lot of pieces, but this is slightly bad marketing, especially considering that it plainly shows the motor on the box cover.

With all this in mind, I still like the set, I just do not see that the price justifies it, even with Mike Walsh's comparison to the other engines and cars as of late. So I will wait and see how the reviews are before I bother with this one.

Besides I have Star Wars to worry about too. X-D

What? That doesn't mean they aren't allowed to buy it, it means thats the recomended age.

This set was already out on the shelves at the Bluewater Lego Store when I visited last Wednesday. They had it priced at
Those sets are a result of the Ambassador Program which isn't really a secret anymore ;-)

Correction, Hobbes. This set has no connection to the ambassador program whatsoever. Hence why the box says "made by Lego fans", instead of "made by Lego Ambassadors" (not to say that they aren't fans either) ;-) . And before you question my sources, my source is one of the designers themselves: Tim Gould.

Unfortunately this has already been said by Mike Walsh on page 2 ;-)

And Tim just corrected me about that as you posted that :-P

  • 3 weeks later...

I would have to say that I *wub* this set too. I am glad to see the Lego company is finally creating a "Creator" type set for the train community. My guess is Lego will release a "Railcar" set next. If they do I can't wait to see what that looks like. I am a firm believer that if Lego can keep creating sets like this, they could definitly have a place in the model railroader community. Lego, keep up the good work. *y*
