Hi Everyone!

I just created this, and thought I would share, as it might give someone an idea for a us in a Moc or something.

I'm thinking a car perhaps with seats on top. It could only be 3 studs high.

It basically gears around the stationary motors and I'm guessing creates the following ratios.

1 motor equals 4:1

2 motors equals 2:1

3 motors equals 4:3

And 4 motors equal 1:1 output.

Now if you could create a level on the remotes that engages 1 channel at a time, you would have silky smooth gear changes! :grin:

Awesome! I've never seen that before, it's a pretty good idea though,but it takes a lot of space and motors and the output is on the side.

Thanks, yes it is a bit large. The output could be going straight to the rear diffs if you know what I mean. You need to visualize it 90 degrees turned. :laugh:

And this could also be 4WD!

This setup is already known, but more commonly only using two motors and one differential. Nevertheless, it's not logical because you have the more torque when the car goes the faster...

Your setup is basically a triple adder. The idea is well known, and frankly - sorry for sounding unenthusiastic - I don't see how it's better than simply coupling & running all 4 motors together all the time. It's not like more torque is gonna hurt you, and if you put 4 motors into a MOC, I think you want to use them rather than use just one or two and carry the rest as extra weight. I fail to see the gain here, other than perhaps better control over the overall power consumption.

There is also one possible problem, since all your motors have the same gear ratio - if there is a huge load on the output, the active motors can start driving the inactive motors rather than the output. Happened to me with XL motors, so it's all the more likely with the L ones.

Thanks for the input guys! Yes the idle motors do spin backwards under high load, XL motors would help a lot. Yes it has its con, but the advantage is instant change in speed! I feel this could be used in a medium car moc and will give it a try when I have finished my current project. :sweet:

For me the idea is useless because it wastes resources (torque and speed) with motors that work against each other. Sorry, but nothing interesting for me plus it takes so much space.

Yes, this is useless, if it doesn't increases the torque when the rpm (the final axle) will be lower. BUT your idea is good, I also made a similar one some days ago with two XL motor and with two different input: http://www.brickshel...os/img_7241.jpg - 16:16 on one side; 24:8 on another. This worked as a gearbox, but wasn't good, you have to carrie the other motor, has very low efficiency because of the differential, weak(caused by the 12 t gears in the diff), and the non working motor can be driven backward under high load by the other motor, as it was mentioned already in this topic. It only has one advantage: it can switch gear very smoothly.

So the biggest disadvantage of these gearboxes the weakness and the backdrive effect. Of course, in my version, two motor didn' work at the same time. I imagined that as a car, which has one XL motor, and you change them, when you change gear. The ratios are different, so it can work(but I don' recommend it as I wrote :classic: ).

Back to fake gearboxes:

The biggest fake one, and the most misunderstanded(it seemed from the comments) gearbox is this:

- totally useless as a 4speed one, this is a two speed gearbox and a power increaser. Better, if you use that two motors together. In this case of the torque will be higher, the rpm also. Thats' not a 4 speed gearbox, but it's really called a "super and innovative" gearbox. Edited by Mbmc
