Hello everyone,

I am visiting the US tomorrow for a couple of weeks and would like to purchase a few sets whilst I am there. I particularly like the modular series and would find another one of these a useful parts pack. I also like the creator sets and monster fighters series.

I am also wondering if this is the best time to get the tower bridge as the price is good for me and it would make an excellent parts pack.

My budget is between 350-450 USD. I know pretty much what to expect in terms of cost in official Lego stores but wondering if people have any suggestions, such as TRU etc which I have heard they do have good offers from time to time.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Thoughts on which I should buy first?

I'm partial to Star Wars, so I have to side with the Death Star.

Should I buy one of each NRG ninja (including the weapon package with NRG Kai) and Lloyd ZX? It's extremely expensive for only five minifigures (and one more, which is not quite as important), but I'd really love to have those metallic-printed pieces. And a green ninja. =J

And on a completely unrelated note, would it be worth buying them as an investment? Is the price of a sealed NRG ninja, or Lloyd ZX, going to rise after they're taken off the shelves?

Set 10223 Kingdom's Joust, or set 10197 Fire Brigade? I know they both won't be around much longer, so I'm getting the urge to pull the trigger - the only problem is that I can only afford one.

I love historical LEGO - more castles than anything else, though lately I've been getting the urge to build my own version of the Ghostbusters' Firehouse. I'm just not sure if it'd be easier to do with the Fire Brigade as a starting point, or if I should just start buying individual bricks and following some of the plans I've seen elsewhere on the net'.

I don't have much in the way of LEGO castle at all - mostly just Lord of the Rings as well as Medieval Market Village, Mill Village Raid, and King's Carriage - but I'm not sure I should be buying old sets with factions that may not be used again. Certainly trying to buy other discontinued LEGO Kingdom's sets would be very expensive. And they all have the old horses too... :sceptic:

Help?

I think I would go the Fire Brigade, mainly because it has great parts for a Ghostbusters MOC, will be going off shelves a lot earlier than the Kingdoms Joust, plus if you decide to keep the set you buy together, for me it feels like a much more complete building than the castl in the Joust.

Set 10223 Kingdom's Joust, or set 10197 Fire Brigade?

I'd go with any Castle sets in this instance. Seeing as LOTR will be dominating the medieval side of things for the next couple of years, those Castle sets are going to disappear without being replaced by anything new in the Castle line. If The Hobbit goes for three movies, it might be somewhere along three years before we see a true Castle set. Meanwhile, the Fire Dept concept seems to be a big piece of the City line and I expect you'll find more sets that could work in the same three year span.

Is the Alien Mothership worth it—even at discount?

I'm a huge fan of Alien Conquest, but I just can't bring myself to buy the Mothership. Aside from one wicked cool minifig, the set just doesn't appeal to me. I'd say if you like the AC vibe, buy a couple of the other small sets instead and use them to build your own version of a mothership, or save your change for the legendary Earth Defense HQ. It's worth every penny.

not sure which state you will visit. because different state (even town) has different tax rate.

which means could be almost 10% different (some place has 10% tax and some place has 0)

also you might want to get a 10% in store coupon if you visit LEGO store (only for 1 item but still good.

it is only in printed LEGO catalog though)

another thing is to buy from Amazon.com - which could be a little or even more off the MSRP - and no tax for many states

TRU will have buy 2 and get 1 free (or buy 1 get 1 50% off) next month I think? it would save some if you have a right combo

(they normally exclude many sets though).

Good luck.

If I was going to spend a lot of money on a few sets, I'd go big or go home. Modulars all the way. I love the design and build techniques. Plus they look great when you start adding them together to create a nice street scene.

The Tower Bridge is impressive and if I didn't want to spend money on all these other sets, I would definitely pick one up. My wife was just commenting on how neat it was, so I almost might order one anyway.

nicoga3000

Do you like minifigures or a complete build more? From my understanding the Death Star is a great play set, but the Tower Bridge is an impressive display piece. I love minifigures and I've been getting into Star Wars lately, but a lot of those are an older design of the figure and I think the newest versions look much better. So if it was me, I'd go Tower Bridge all the way, and then use the rest of the money that you would have spent on the Death Star and pick up a few other sets (even Star Wars related if necessary).

I only have the Fire Brigade, but it is by far my most favorite Modular. The aesthetic is brilliant for sure and if you are going to do a Ghostbusters MOC I would imagine there would be some good piece usage with that, although I haven't seen any online ideas for a LEGO Ghostbusters firehouse. I hadn't considered that before, but that would actually be really neat. Great, now I may have to try my hand at that. As far as the Joust goes, I think the entryway and little buildings look great. Much better than the King's Castle, but do you plan on keeping it together or MOCing something else with it (like the Fire Brigade)? I intend to get the Joust sometime, but I would start with the Fire Brigade. It will definitely go away a lot sooner than the Joust. The Joust is a 2012 set basically and being D2C it should be around a little while. I think S@H might still have Diagon Alley which was 2011.

The Tower Bridge will be out till at least the end of the year I'm guessing. Who's knows when the Death Star is going OOP.

Well, if you don't have 10228 Haunted House, get it fast! First, it's a great model. Second, excellent parts pack for City building. The Modulars are always good buys.

Depending on how accurate you are looking to get, the Fire Brigade is already a pretty close stand in for the Ghostbusters Firehouse. It essentially is a north east US classic Firehouse. the simple way is just replace the flag with a GB sign. The more complex project might be to narrow it to remove the right hand windows. I think the house used in the movie was a very narrow single bay. Sadly no place for a basement containment unit?

I am mixed between the two sets. I love he Fire Brigade and suspect it will be gone first. But there is just something so compelling about the Joust. I'd lose sleep over that choice.

That is going to be tough to call as the two sets appeal to radically different AFOL's. Personally I would go Death Star. But I am an old school nerdling. I like the 24 minifigs and the way it seems like the classic Kenner Death Star play set amped up to 11. It's like the ultimate dollhouse for geeks.

The Tower Bridge is more for the architecture lovers. It's the most spectacular of those type sets save the Eifel Tower. Your wife may also not be as reticent to display it, as opposed to the Death Star.

If you are just using the Tower Bridge as a parts patch, try and check out the Lego stores. The one by me typically has damaged box sets deeply discounted, and they always seem to have a few damaged TB's.

Losing sleep is right! I haven't made up my mind yet - everyone's arguments are all pretty good. Perhaps I might try to swing the Fire Brigade now and attempt to get the Joust before the end of the year..? Though the Hobbit sets will be here before you know it... :oh3:

I feel way too old, but as long as my parents still enjoy getting their kids something for Christmas - I'm asking for LEGO!

I feel way too old, but as long as my parents still enjoy getting their kids something for Christmas - I'm asking for LEGO!

That is basically the only thing I ask for from my parents and my wife. I should really start asking for more practical stuff.

I hope nobody minds me bumping my own question, but since it's gotten no replies even by those considerate enough to answer to every single question that's still out in the open (which is an admirable and kind initiative, I think), I'll conclude that it's a bad idea to combine my advice and my questions in one post. =)

So, I asked this question a while ago:

Maybe I am reading the question wrong, do you just want the figures or are you partial to their "weapon of choice" as well? I'm not super familiar with Ninjago, but the newer figures look really neat. I would only be interested in the figures, so I would look at bricklink and see how much they go for there and if it is cheaper to just buy the official sets/spinner packages then go that route. I've noticed sometimes it is cheaper to go through TLG/retailer than an individual person most often.

I wouldn't expect the prices to soar, but according to brickpicker, the Ice Dragon Attack value was extremely elevated so I couldn't say for sure if the NRG figures would garner more interest. I've never been one to keep things sealed for investment purposes and I'd rather display the figures together.

But I would recommend getting them if you really like the looks of them. I am holding out for the kimono versions in 2013.

Hi folks,

I am pretty new to this and need some help. My son is turning five and has asked for some Star Wars Lego for his birthday. He's a pretty good builder, but he definitely can't handle anything too complex. We build together, and he genuinely loves that. He takes extremely good care of his sets and is pedantic about not losing pieces! Building is something we do together. He then plays with the sets and does minor modifications to suit whatever storyline he's got going. He loves his DC sets the most, but has developed a love for Star Wars and is now desperate for some Star Wars Lego. I'm in a bit of a bind. He loves Luke and Anakin the most, and of course Darth Vader, but I can't find a set that would cover all his favorites - Luke and Darth Vader being OT (he loves eps 4 & 6) and Anakin from Clone Wars.

What sets would you recommend for a 5 yo, bearing in mind that I'm happy to go for more complex builds, so the recommended age factor isn't really a key tipping point. The key factor is that the sets need to contain as many key figures as possible, and not be too outrageous a gift for a 5 yo, given that we have many years of collecting and building ahead of us... Cost isn't really a huge factor either, in the sense that I don't mind spending a bit more for recently retired sets, and he's not a spoiled child throughout the year. I would prefer a couple of small to medium sets, or one big one.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

I want to buy MMV before it is out of line but I want to wait for double VIP points (October). Do you think it is still available in 2 weeks?

PsyKater

I would expect it to still be available. If they still have Fire Brigade, I would imagine MMV will still exist in stock. I assume that came out as the 2010 D2C set, so I would expect it to be available at least through the holidays until the next D2C becomes available. At the very least they could maybe get some holiday sales with it still being available this close to the holidays. But my opinion holds no bearing to what TLG decides to do. I've gambled before and missed out on things by waiting too long, and then other times it worked out better (as in getting more VIP points, or shipping deal, etc.) So is it worth the gamble to you? Personally I would wait, but I am not waiting on any sets that could go out of production soon, so I can afford to wait a little longer on the Joust and whatnot.

Mandarine

Even though it is ridiculously expensive (but you get a lot with it), go for the Death Star. That should cover all of your needs with multiple characters and an iconic playset. Otherwise, I would recommend Luke's Landspeeder since it is out of production or soon to be and it has a lot of iconic characters. As far as Darth goes, I don't think it is too easy to find him in a cheap set, so maybe Bricklink him. I am still waiting on the right set to get him in since I don't want to spend multiple hundreds on a set for him.

For most of the core SW original trilogy characters the best set is probably the 7965 Milenium Falcon. It's still around $100 USD. But it is the smallest current set with Darth Vader. And would be a thrilling play set for him, without hitting the shear craziness of the Death Star. It has all the main original characters except the Droids. They can be gotten from the Droid Escape set.

CW Anakin is easier and cheaper to get. 7957 Sith Nightspeeder has him, plus Ventriss and Savage Opress. So 1 Jedi, 2 Sith. In a pretty cheap set.

Luke's Landspeeder, definitely. You get Luke, Old Obi-Wan, Threepio and Artoo, plus a Sandtrooper and an iconic vehicle. The build is easy enough, and the speeder is totally swooshable. This set is a wonderful introduction to LSW.

I totally agree. Four iconic characters, a fun build, great design. All for about $20!

Thanks everyone. I was looking at some combination of Luke's Landspeeder and the Malevolence, or Anakin's Jedi Starfighter; and the Millennium Falcon and Droid Escape. He also really likes Palpatine's Shuttle... Though he saw Jabba's Palace yesterday and said he really liked that one, My only concern is the lack of swoosh-able ships - and no Luke!

Nice to have such dilemmas!

Edited by Mandarine

I would go for the 9493 X-Wing Starfighter, which although contains only Luke and R2 of the main characters, but it's an extremely swooshable ship, and a great model of arguably the most iconic ship in Star Wars.
