Faefrost Posted July 21, 2013 Posted July 21, 2013 So I'll be going on vacation to DC and Philly first week of August, which means I'll probably make a trip to a Lego Store or a retailer somewhere; I just wanna know whether it's worth spending $30 US on the 70402 Gatehouse Raid or to use that money on something else? It depends a lot on whether you plan on getting the larger Castle set? The Gatehouse Raid is a decent little set by itself, and is worth it if just for the "evil" red dragon knight on horseback, with the red dragon horse armor. But it's best yet unheralded feature is the three main pieces of the gatehouse can be used as modular expansions to the Castle. Quote

Yeah, it was mostly the dragon knights I really want from it; it's doubtful I'll be getting the larger set though. Thanks guys, I'll look between that and maybe a Chima or Star Wars set. Quote

Tariq j Posted July 22, 2013 Posted July 22, 2013 Tower of Orthanc or all of the second wave Galaxy Squad sets? Personally I would go for the Tower of Orthanic I've seen it displayed and it's spectacular I'm not a huge fan of galaxy sets but it's up to you. Quote
Leo604 Posted July 22, 2013 Posted July 22, 2013 Tower of Orthanc or all of the second wave Galaxy Squad sets? Galaxy Squad sets if you want more playability; otherwise, obviously Orthanc. Quote
Legoroni Posted July 23, 2013 Posted July 23, 2013 I've been saving up a bunch of VIP points and I'm trying to decide between Orthanc and the Ewok Village. Quote

It really depends on whether you prefer set playability (Ewok village) as opposed to just displaying the larger sets (Orthanc); I suppose it'd also help if you preferred one of hte themes over the other, or the one that has more minifigures than the other, etc. Prices aside and just on a first impression, which set appeals to you more? TheLegoDr Posted July 23, 2013 Posted July 23, 2013 I have Orthanc and it is incredibly impressive once built. Some playability, but not as much as the region village. The figures are great on radio it seems, whereas they dropped the ball with Orthanc. The next big question, if you were to MOC with it, do you prefer trees or dark castles? I bought Orthanc on the pre-release because I like Lotr more than Sw. Quote
LiamM32 Posted July 24, 2013 Posted July 24, 2013 I want to buy a large Lego set soon. I am developing my Lego town display. I also like Technic because of my interest in mechanical technology, but I am currently focusing more on developing my town. There are 4 large sets right now that I would like to get; 10224 Town Hall - $250 CAD - This would be my second modular building to add to the Pet Shop. My town currently doesn't have a municipal government. This is the most expensive on this list. 10211 Grand Emporium - $200 CAD - A corner building to add to my town. The only shops currently in my town are the pet shop and a few stands at the farmers market, mostly for food. 10233 Horizon Express - $150 CAD - My favourite set that I have is the Emerald Night. With this one, I would also have a modern train. I don't currently have much track though (24 curved, 8 straight, 16 flex). Although it appears cheaper than the above 2, it would cost more to get separate Power Functions components. 42008 Service Truck - $150 CAD - A yet-to-be released Technic set. Like I said above, I like Technic because of an interest in mechanical technology. I don't have a very large collection of Technic parts, so a set like this should boost my collection. I am especially interested in the Pneumatic components. Quote
Tariq j Posted July 24, 2013 Posted July 24, 2013 Hi, get the grand emporium, it's more likely to run out soon this year. Quote
OrcSan Posted July 24, 2013 Posted July 24, 2013 Hi there , I am a big superhero fan but so far I only collected the Marvel heroes and because we all seen the new Flash and GreenArrow figs (some of my favorites) I think it's time for some DC lego too. What set should I get first ? I am more of a minifigure guy and I don't like big sets like Arkham Asylum or whatever... I am thinking about getting the set with Superman and Wanderwoman, the one with arctic Batman and Aquaman or others. I will like to hear from some experts first , thanks. Quote

I'd say that the Arctic Batman set would give you the most bang for your buck, so to speak. If you liked The Dark Knight Rises you could also get the 76001 Batman vs. Bane Tumbler Chase, but that one might not be so good price-wise. Quote

Add Power Functions to that and it gets pretty expensive. Town Hall is great, but I feel that the Grand Emporium is a better set. Also, GE fits with the Pet Shop more as the Town Hall makes that set look tiny. I'm not a Technic guy, so I can't speak on that one. I'd say Superman/Wonder Woman. I think that the Aquaman set is better as a set, but Supes has better figures and is likely to be retired sooner. Quote
Drock Posted July 25, 2013 Posted July 25, 2013 (edited) Orcsan, Can't go wrong with the Aquaman or superman set. Both are great! I like the build on the Aquaman better. Minifigs are about equal. However, Superman will likely be retiring soon, so I'd go for that one first. Or get both. My favorite 2012 DC set I'd the Batmobile/two face chase. Edited July 25, 2013 by Drock Quote

TheLegoDr Posted July 26, 2013 Posted July 26, 2013 LiamM32 - I love the Modular line, so I would definitely pick one of them up. As others have said, I will repeat. Buy the Grand Emporium first. Once you buy one, it's hard not to get the rest and with that leaving first, probably not a bad idea. In all honesty, I'd go for the Fire Brigade (which wasn't on your list) because it is a really fun build with a beautiful end result. That will also be leaving soon (before the GE I believe). It was my first Modular and I love it, but the GE is a great addition also. The Town hall will have some shelf life left, so I'd hate to rush into that and wait on something else you may end up wanting later. Technic is not for me, so I have no opinion there. But you won't be disappointed with the GE. OrcSan - I would agree with others. The Funhouse Escape is a brilliant set with some great figures. I think in the end it depends on how much you are willing to spend. But I'd go with Funhouse and the Superman/Wonder Woman set to get some nice DC variety. Now for my own question. I have about $300 to spend after August 1st, which is when the new SW sets come out officially. I'm only a passing SW fan, but I love a lot of the figures. The sets are hit/miss with me, so I hate buying the sets, but at the same time most often it is cheaper to just buy the set than each figure individually. With that said, I'm only missing the summer SW sets and then any large exclusives that are currently out. The main sets I'm looking at would be: Jabba's Sailbarge, the Jango Fett droid set, the three planet sets, and Battle of Geonosis. As far as exclusives, I need/want VW Van, Sopwith Camel, Arkham, Town Hall, and Palace Cinema, and the CUUSOO BTTF set. I realize that is a large list, but maybe others who have the sets can attest to them. I know I will get all of those exclusives eventually, the only matter is when. The SW sets are more hit/miss. I don't care so much for the Sailbarge, but the figures look cool but the price is a downer. I mostly just want Jango Fett, but I don't want to spend upwards of $15 (from what I've seen) on a figure in a $20 set, thus why I buy sets. Anyway, thanks in advance! Quote
BlueberryWaffles Posted July 27, 2013 Posted July 27, 2013 Tower of Orthanc or all of the second wave Galaxy Squad sets? I've been saving up a bunch of VIP points and I'm trying to decide between Orthanc and the Ewok Village. I would say Orthanc to both. It's huge. Very impressive. shaggysanchez Posted July 27, 2013 Posted July 27, 2013 Now for my own question. I have about $300 to spend after August 1st, which is when the new SW sets come out officially. I would go with a combination of the Sopwith Camel (excellent set and build) and either Arkham or Palace Cinema. I would then pick up the Jango Fett droid set and or the BTTF set as well which should put you right around your $300 mark. As for Arkham or the Cinema it really comes down to minifigs as both are great sets and fun builds but the figs put AA over the top a bit. I am more of a modular builder and wish AA was more of a full building but it is still an excellent set especially if you are a fan of superheros at all. I am a SW fan and get my fair share of SW sets but in my opinion if you are trying to get the most bang for your buck I would choose any of the exclusive sets you listed over the over priced Barge or imo lackluster duel on geonesis set. Town Hall and VW Van are both great sets and the only two on your list that I don't have yet but plan to get. You could easily sub those two in and I don't think it would be a bad decision but as for me I have continually put those two sets off for one reason or another and managed to buy all the others and not had any second thoughts. FuzzyBallz Posted July 27, 2013 Posted July 27, 2013 My question is 42008 or 42009 now, or wait. Here's the back story. I dabbled into minifig and starwars stuff here and there, but my true passion is Technic. I'm really picky about which Technic sets I get. With the most recent 2H release, I'm eyeing a number of sets. The BOSS 41999 is without a question must get, but I'm also considering getting the 42008 Service Truck and 42009 Mobile Crane MKII as well. My problem right now, and has always been is that I would buy a set, or two, or a bunch, and I would put them in my closet for a very long time and not build it. I don't resell stuff for profit on auction sets. That's not the reason why I keep my sets for so long without building them. I simply don't have time to build them! I still have the 9396 Helicopter, 9398 4x4 Crawler, and 8110 Unimog unopened sitting in my closet. I bought them October last year! So if I get the 42008 and 42009, I'll just be adding another 2 sets of Technic the collection! But I don't want to miss out on buying them and have them go out of print. I sure don't want to pay an arm and leg to get it later. I kind of regret not getting the 10194 Emerald Night train set back when it was available for cheap. :( Quote

Have you seen them both displayed before? Sometimes when I'm trying decide what to get I see them displayed and decide from there. Which reminds me which set should I get? Rancor Pitt £59.99 Good things: Good figures Interesting variety of cave pieces Bad things: I don't have jabbas palace so I have nothing to combind it with. Heavily overpriced OR.., AT-TE Good things: more figures More playability features Bad things: more expensive Edited July 28, 2013 by Tariq j Quote
FuzzyBallz Posted July 29, 2013 Posted July 29, 2013 I've been obsessed with watching review videos and build videos of the 42008 and 42009, I do want them both! I would get the 75019 AT-TE without a question. Clone Wars large land and air vehicles are awesome looking and always come with the best figures. While I don't like the battle droids, you get a clone trooper commander, and 2 Jedi Masters, one of them being Mace Windu! Dude, you have to get the set just for that figure alone! As for the 75005 Rancor Pit, you're absolutely correct, it's completely overpriced for what you get. Maybe it would look nice if you have Jaba's Palace, but for that kind of money I rather spend it on the up-coming 75021 Republic Gunship! Quote
