Brickdoctor Posted January 8, 2011 Posted January 8, 2011 7286 Prisoner Transport, 7915 V-Wing, 7978 Angler Attack, or 7307 Flying Mummy Attack? As I said before, I'm pretty eclectic when it comes to themes, so I'm pretty much looking for the best build. I'm going to have to betray Star Wars here, because the new V-wing is inaccurate and ugly. Flying Mummy Attack, on the other hand, looks like it's got some pretty nice new pieces if you aren't theme-specific. Quote

As your LEGO budget is apparently not that big, I would strongly advise against buying the V-Wing. Star Wars sets are generally very expensive and this one is not exactly the best out there. Of the ones you mentioned, I'd cleary buy Flying Mummy Attack if I were you. Other great choices for small sets would be 7306 Golden Staff Guardians to go with it, or the 7235 police bike which is awesome! Quote

As I said before, I'm pretty eclectic when it comes to themes, so I'm pretty much looking for the best build. I have the Prisoner Transport and the Flying Mummy Attack... Of the two, it's a toss-up-- although I do recall feeling a bit cheated with the price of the Pharaoh set. For essentially a plane and an obelisk it seemed overpriced. And I didn't recall feeling that way with the Prison Van, fwiw Now, for the real reason I logged on... Okay, Prateek and others, my local TRU has tons of leftover 7642 City Garage sets, none of which are currently on sale (yet). At the same rate, nearby Targets have leftover 7946 King's Castle sets, which also have yet to reach clearance status. I've put aside enough cash to cover either of these at about 25% off... but which one do I hold out for? I feel that the Castle is clearly the better set, but I've been building up my City for a future layout and can't help but wonder if every City needs a full-service garage, so to speak. Thoughts? As I said before, I'm pretty eclectic when it comes to themes, so I'm pretty much looking for the best build. I own two of those and have done some research on the other two so here is my opinion: 7978 Angler Attack is the best choice for pieces, for new minifigures 7307 Flying Mummy Attack. The Flying Mummy Attack is really lacking in pieces, with only around 100 pieces. Barely worth $20, the mummies are the best part. Definitely not the V-Wing if you're big on accuracy. Quote

If you want a garage, buy this one: click and oooh You would also have a petrol station! That new garage is poor in comparison. Go for the castle. Edited January 9, 2011 by Enpaz Quote

The flying mummy is lacking pieces, and the Prisoner Transport is not very cool at all. Quote

Plus three great minifigs. You have to give Flying Mummy Attack that! Edited January 9, 2011 by Enpaz Quote
nicoga3000 Posted January 10, 2011 Posted January 10, 2011 Is there a good set out there that has a solid chunk of "hard to find" pieces in it? I know that's a really vague question, but after I finish putting together 10193 Medieval Market Village and 5766 Log Cabin, I'm going to start disassembling everything I own and sorting out everything. After that, I'm going to delve into the world of MOC fun. That being said, I'll probably start with modular stuff. Any tips/help/suggestions for a set or two to grab? Quote

If you want to build modular buildings then I'd go and buy a modular building set. They always have great techniques and new or hard to find pieces, plus obviously they have all the basic parts you need to build your own. Quote

Yeah, I have Grand Emporium, Apple Tree House, Log Cabin, Medieval Market, and Winter Bakery Village. Just trying to see if there are any other "must haves" for modular fun, or just for really sweet, hard to find, rare pieces. Is the Diagon Alley set worth it for creative modular builds? Quote
AndyC Posted January 10, 2011 Posted January 10, 2011 Diagon Alley certainly has lots of interesting and useful pieces, so definitely worth considering. As are the big sets like Taj Mahal and Tower Bridge (all those tan cheeses! ) which have lots of cool parts and work out pretty well from a cost per piece approach too. Quote

Tower Bridge is on my list for sure...Just waiting until I find the right time for that one! :) Taj Mahal is a sexy piece, I must say. Problem is, I don't know where to find it without paying a small fortune! Quote
Commander Laquiet Posted January 11, 2011 Posted January 11, 2011 Dilemma: Medieval Market Village or Diagon Alley? Both are wonderful but I cannot decide which. And no, both is not an answer . Quote
Zeya Posted January 11, 2011 Posted January 11, 2011 Medieval Market Village or Diagon Alley? Medieval Market Village all the way. I just built this set, and it's as fantastic as everyone says. There are so many detailed parts, and this set is not "parts stingy" like you can sometimes feel with other sets. The buildings are really well designed and look great. I can't recommend it enough. Diagon Alley looks pretty strong too. I'd say only consider that over MMV if you're a big HP fan. I must admit I haven't built Diagon Alley though, so maybe I'm a little bit biased. Quote
prateek Posted January 11, 2011 Posted January 11, 2011 Dilemma: Medieval Market Village or Diagon Alley? MMV. MMV is cheaper, so you can recoup your money faster, plus, it's not gonna be around for much longer. Quote
Commander Laquiet Posted January 11, 2011 Posted January 11, 2011 Yeah. I guess Diagon Alley should be around for a while yet anyway, so that could possibly be a later purchase. Quote

Cpt Smileyface Posted January 15, 2011 Posted January 15, 2011 I came out of my dark ages about a year ago. Until now I've been playing with traditional Lego, but would like to get back into Technic and need to know what would be a better first big set to buy. I'm considering either 8053 - Mobile Crane or 8043 - Motorized Excavator. What I'm looking for in a set is a model that uses some interesting building techniques that I can learn from, as well as a good parts pack to get me started with MOC once I finish playing with the main model. So far the only Technic I've built since coming back is 8047 - Compact Excavator and 8051 - Motorbike. I had a lot of fun with both of them and want to learn more, and get enough Technic pieces to do some MOC. Besides the motors, is there anything else 8043 offers to make it worth the extra $100? Are there any other sets I should be considering given my needs? Quote

I don't have either set(yet) unfortunetly myself, but from what research and looking I've done, The Motorized Excavator seems like a great starting point when it comes to getting started in Motorized Technic again, the fact it has 4 M Motors 4 Linear Actuators, 2 Reciever and 2 Remotes is just massive IMO. IF you have the cash at least... If your not as interested in the motorizing stuff, I would go with the Mobile Crane instead. Mike Quote

The complex gearbox mechanism in 8043 means you get plenty of really useful parts for building gear mechanisms, which the mobile crane is not quite so good at. And there are plenty of linear actuators too which can be fun, as well as essential for comparison when you read all the 'LA vs Pneumatics' discussion in the Technic forums! Speaking of which the 8049 Log Loader is a possibility, the main model is not so good (although the B model is better), but it is the only Pneumatics set available at the moment and they're always fun to play with. Although holding off for the forthcoming Unimog model may be a better option. Quote
Masked Builder Posted January 15, 2011 Posted January 15, 2011 So should I get 7929 or some hero factory and some Ninjago? Quote
Brickdoctor Posted January 15, 2011 Posted January 15, 2011 So should I get 7929 or some hero factory and some Ninjago? 7929. Best minifig value since the Battle of Endor and MTT. Hero Factory maybe only one, just to get those new trans-blue 4L bars. Quote
prateek Posted January 15, 2011 Posted January 15, 2011 (edited) Time for an unbiased opinion I think BoN is a solid set especially if you want BDs and Gungans. Plus, the model looks pretty nice too. It also has a lot of brown and dk. tan. NinjaGo is a good line. I'd go for the 3 smallest sets in the line (Motorbike, Training Outpost, and Ninja Ambush), which are roughly the same cost as BoN, if you do chose NinjaGo. Hero Factory would be nice only if you collect it/play with them, otherwise I don't think it's worth it, considering most of the parts aren't compatible with System/Technic anymore. So true. I'm actually okay, in my mind, at building Bionicle so I think I'll get two. Though the trans bars seal the deal for me. Really now it's between 7929 and Skeleton Bowling. Hero Factory is something I've been wanting to experiment with and the new ones are the best so far so we'll see. Quote
