newwavejunkie Posted May 10, 2011 Posted May 10, 2011 I also had a hard time picking between these two sets. For me it came down to which set of minifigs I liked better...with Isla de Muerta coming out the winner. I think having the undead Jack face was better than the scared version in the Fountain of Youth set. Both the Barbossa figures look awesome but I prefer the version from the Isla de Muerta set. Skeleton Barbossa is way better than the regular skeleton in the Fountain of Youth. Blackbeard and Elizabeth were a tossup for me. I really want them both but I figured I can pick up Blackbeard in the Queen Anne's Revenge (still haven't decided if I want this set or not) or on Bricklink. P.S. POTC posts belong in the Pirates forums. Just an FYI. Quote
Stab Posted May 10, 2011 Posted May 10, 2011 (edited) Hi and thanks for sharing your thoughts! A few minutes ago I ordered Isla de Muerta!! I was really impressed because my thoughts where exactly the same! I chose it because of the minifigs! I also prefer the zombie-face Jack and the better skeleton Barbossa over the ordinary one! I also wanted Blackbeard but I might get him with Queen Anne's Revenge too! (if i get it!) Or maybe with the Black Pearl! Edited May 10, 2011 by Stab Quote

Piranha Posted May 11, 2011 Posted May 11, 2011 Is 10020 Super Chief worth the $200 MISB? (I plan to open & build) I saw the used ones were just 20-$30 cheaper and missing parts so I might as well get the MISB? Is 10027 Train Engine shed worth the $250+ MISB? (no used ones I could find for less) Or is it better to spend the money on the upcoming Cargo Train this fall? Quote
r1chard Posted May 14, 2011 Posted May 14, 2011 guys help me decide, ie. convince myself, if i will buy MMV. i find it expensive for a student like me eh, $135 + 13% tax. sometimes i tend to price it per item, like the minifigs probably cost say $3 a piece, etc. i like most parts of it like the tree, animals, market stall, how do you convince yourselves when buying big sets with the guilt or make yourself feel better knowing i should stop buying after a big purchase. thanks in advance/ Quote

(no used ones I could find for less) Or is it better to spend the money on the upcoming Cargo Train this fall? I don't know anything about trains but I personally feel that it is cheaper to buy current sets. Since you own the MISB Super Chief, would you regret opening it in a few years? how do you convince yourselves when buying big sets with the guilt or make yourself feel better knowing i should stop buying after a big purchase. After sets go out of production, their prices will rise. If you think in the long run, you will be saving money if you buy it now. Does Amazon charge shipping and tax in Canada? It may be cheaper buying from them. Quote
Iysk Posted May 14, 2011 Posted May 14, 2011 I have decided to get MMV. I just spent about 160 for the Star Wars Promotion and Alamut from Amazon. Would amazon or the Lego S@H be the place to buy? I understand Amazon gives free shipping + no tax, but from the lego site would contribute to VIP (5 bucks). I'm guessing Amazon, but I don't know if it'll still be there by August (I've decided to indulge again near my birthday, I feel like I've spent too much). What other sets other than the upcoming Mill sets provide an abundance of brown that's under 50? Quote
WhiteFang Posted May 19, 2011 Posted May 19, 2011 8404 Public City Transport or 7637 Farm? That shouldn't be too hard. I own both sets and I really think the exclusive TRU 8404 Public City Transport appeals to me the most. Not because of its exclusivity but for the fact, that this set boost a greater and stronger presence of LEGO public transport system to cater for your City population growth and at the same time, it can always be revamp and integrated into your City layouts very easily. For the Farm, the selling point could be its unique cows. If you own the current City Farm collection, then this is the main highlight and you shouldn't miss it for anything. Of course, if you are planning to build a countryside, this is also a good set to start with. But I couldn't really bother with this set, if you only have just one choice. If I was you, the 8404 Public City Transport System is the one for me. Quote
ZO6 Posted May 19, 2011 Posted May 19, 2011 8404 Public City Transport or 7637 Farm? It really depends what you're in the market for. If you want to boost the amount of vehicles for your town then the Public Transport set is the way to go (I find that the structures in the set are borderline throwaways). If on the other hand you want something a bit more unique for your town then the Farm is the way to go. I give the nod to the Farm as I found it to have a lot of charm and was a nice change of pace from most city sets. To each is own though, hopefully whatever choice you make is to your satisfaction Quote
Vindicare Posted May 19, 2011 Posted May 19, 2011 While I love 8404, I would somewhat lean to 7637. As long as you can find a good deal on it. While i don't know how much shelf life 8404 has. But, you can still easily purchase it. Of course, it also depends on your needs of either set. Are you wanting 8404 to build up your city? Or do you just want it for the collecting factor. If you're looking to expand your city and make it more diverse, I'd go with 7637. In all reality though, I'd get both. Quote
lightningtiger Posted May 19, 2011 Posted May 19, 2011 8404 Public City Transport or 7637 Farm? Easy - 8404 Public Transport - the only set with a tram and coach bus together. Quote
Dropsy Posted May 19, 2011 Posted May 19, 2011 The wife and I are about to buy our first ever Lego set. Any recommendations? She likes the city/Creator/buildings you know real life things. I rather get something in the theme she likes (might warm her up more to hobby). Thank you! The set does not have to be in production. But under 180$ usd. Thank you! Quote
Cwetqo Posted May 19, 2011 Posted May 19, 2011 10218 Pet shop would be great choice. Its realistic and the price is just right. If you dont want modular set then 7641 city corner and 8404 transport center would also be great, but somehow more vehicle oriented option. Creator houses are also great, but I dont like current ones. If you will wait a few weeks there will be new, more realistic white creator house and great lighthouse. I had the same situation with my wife and so far she liked modulars the most (she got and built all of them) and also all previous creator houses (all but this brown one which is ugly). Quote
meyerc13 Posted May 19, 2011 Posted May 19, 2011 The Pet Shop looks nice, but those large sets can be very daunting to a new builder. It might be better to start with one of the Creator Houses. I've seen the new lighthouse at Toys R Us, that might be a good choice, the Hillside House would be another if/when it is available in your area. Quote
Zeya Posted May 19, 2011 Posted May 19, 2011 The modular houses (pet shop, grand emporium, fire brigade, others that are discontinued) cost about $150 USD before any tax, so that's right under your $180 limit. If you want a cheaper option and/or aren't sure about this new Lego hobby, you can go to your local TRU (if you're in the USA), and there you can find one of the Creator houses/buildings. The new ones are Hillside House and the lighthouse set. You'll be almost guaranteed to find the Log Cabin set. But ones that are likely to still be on shelves are Apple Tree House, and I even found the large Family Home about 3 months ago, but I think that was a fluke, maybe an online return from Christmas or something. You might luck out and see a Beach House. My favorite Creator buildings were the Beach House and the Family Home. When it comes to Creator sets, the older ones are bigger and thus more likely to be more fun for AFOLs like us. Quote
jamzee Posted May 19, 2011 Posted May 19, 2011 (edited) Hi friends, I'm a huge Star Wars and Classic Space fan and am looking to get one of two packages.... which would you get and why?! 1) 10188 Death Star - is it really as good as everyone says - has it ever been out of LEGO's top 20 @ LS@H?! or 2) Alien Conquest: Earth Defence Unit PLUS New Pod Racers out shortly, and still have <probably> £100 left! Thanks for any tips/comments etc: Edited May 19, 2011 by jamzee Quote
Brickdoctor Posted May 19, 2011 Posted May 19, 2011 Well the DS is a great set overall if you're looking for a good amount of classic 'figs and some useful parts, it's just expensive. If you're more of an OT fan, the DS is a lot better than the Pods. Quote
Zeya Posted May 19, 2011 Posted May 19, 2011 I know this question comes up all the time, but things might have changed recently, and I haven't kept very good track of this. I'm thinking about getting on the modular buildings bandwagon. But I'm worried about when the current ones might disappear. Obviously Pet Shop was just released. But Grand Emporium and Fire Brigade might be disappearing from shelves. On brickset it says that Fire Brigade was released in Sept '09 and Grand Emporium was released in March '10. (Doesn't that seem pretty close together? What's up with that?) So I guess my question is, when will Fire Brigade actually disappear? This month is kind of rough on finances, but I might be willing to buy it in June or July perhaps. Quote
Cwetqo Posted May 19, 2011 Posted May 19, 2011 Fire Brigade will surely be there until september and most likely even longer, until nex spring or even later. Green grocer just disapeared around half year ago, almost after 3 years on market, Cafe Corner was also present for two and a half years, so I expect similar for Fire Brigade. Ify you want to go modular then of course start with Fire Brigade, even if its not your favorite set. Believe me, you will be sorry if you dont get it after its gone, because prices will just rise. I wil never forget myself for not getting Market street (only one which I dont have). You will have at least one year to get Grand Emporium and at least two years for Pet Shop. Quote
Piranha Posted May 20, 2011 Posted May 20, 2011 Hey guys, thanks for all the great responses, I still found myself torn between the two though, there was alot of good arguments for and against and eventually I realized the only one to choose was both That shouldn't be too hard.
