Vindicare Posted May 29, 2012 Posted May 29, 2012 Hi, my daughter, almost eight, loves to build LEGO. She has saved up lots of money and is really interested in one of the modular buildings. The following are still available: the Fire Brigade, Pet Shop, Grand Emporium & Town Hall. Due price the town hall may be too steep? In terms of building the other three are all cool. Which one would you advice? Ya know, I'd just let her choose. Get a picture with all four in one so she can see them all together. She may enjoy it better then, since she picked it out. Otherwise, I'd also go with the Pet Shop. For a kid, it has more options for play. More power to your daughter being so young and building Modulars...I have a hard enough time and I'm 31. Quote
sok117 Posted May 30, 2012 Posted May 30, 2012 If I were you, I'd get the Castle, because it's one of the better castles (besides Helm's Deep) in a while. But, and this is a big but, if you hold minifigs to such high regards, go with the Quinjet. Honestly, you can't go wrong with either one. OR... just save up some more and get Helm's Deep! I don't really care for Lord of The Rings (Great way to start a flame war), so I guess I'll go with the castle, who knows, I might even get both! Quote
TheLegoDr Posted May 30, 2012 Posted May 30, 2012 sok117 I would go with the Vampyre Castle. It has a great selection of figures and a nice parts-pack if you wanted to mod anything. If not, the castle itself looks really neat with lots of great play features. I really like the hidden stairwell. And yes, the Man-bats are The Quinjet doesn't do anything for me, but some of the other Super Hero sets did. Maybe I'm not that into the Avengers after all. horizon I would recommend the Fire Brigade. Yes, it is going away first, but it is a really beautiful building. It was my first Modular last Christmas and really is a sight to see. The figures are cute, the fire-engine is beautiful, and you get a fire house dog! The ping-pong table and furniture are neat as well. The Pet Shop might allow more play value, which is important at this time in her life, but it would really stink to miss out on a set she may regret later. At least, the Pet Shop will be around a while if she changes her mind. I don't currently own the Pet Shop or Town Hall, but I will within the next year. All I know, the Grand Emporium and Fire Brigade do not disappoint, so I am sure the other newer sets wouldn't either. Quote
Onatu Posted May 31, 2012 Posted May 31, 2012 Okay guys, so I've managed to finally nab something to gain income during this summer, and I'll get my first paycheck soon enough. Obviously, I plan on buying some Lego with a bit of that money, but I want some opinions on what to get. First off, let me put it straight: these will be the first Lego system sets I have bought in over ten years. I am just coming out of my Dark Ages thanks to my discovery of the Collectible Minifigures at the beginning of this year. I've reclaimed serious interest in Lego, and have since figured out a few sets I know I will get. Right now, I plan on picking up The Swamp Creature set from the Monster Hunters theme as well as Wolverine's Chopper Showdown, the both of them primarily for the minifigs. Beyond that, I'm stuck. I know I'd like to grab another one or two sets, but I'm not sure what. While I'm technically not on a budget, I still would prefer not to spend boatloads of cash. I had serious interest in the Ghost Train, but the $80 price tag is pushing me away. That's not to say I wouldn't still pick it up, but it does gain less of an appeal thanks to that price. So basically, what are the best value sets I can grab right now? I suppose anything $100 and under is my range (Vampyre's Castle is tempting, but being a college student I'm iffy with moving it around a lot), but I would definitely prefer under $50 range for sets. Quote
Vindicare Posted May 31, 2012 Posted May 31, 2012 Well, Onatu. Are you wanting to collect any and all sets that interest you? Since you're just starting there's definitely a lot to get. 5888 Ocean Interceptor, 5884 Raptor Chase, 4431 Ambulance, 4432 Garbage Truck, 4433 Dirt Bike Transporter, 4434 Tipper Truck, 4435 Car and Caravan, 9466 Crazy Scientist & His Monster, 9448 Samurai Mech, 7346 Seaside House. That's a few to get you started. You got Dino, City, Monster Fighters, Ninjago and Creator. All around $50. Quote
CMP Posted May 31, 2012 Posted May 31, 2012 Good value and self-contained sets? Definitely Shelob's Attack. You don't have to be a Lord of the Rings fan to enjoy it, Shelob's a great buildf, and the figs are great. Quote

If your getting the chopper showdown the I would also consider getting the cosmic cube escape, Captain America's avenging cycle and maybe even the helicarrier breakout. There are some great figures in the Marvel sets especially Iron man and The Hulk. If you really wanted to go for it then you could get the quinjet. However I would personally wait to get this at a lower price or part of a promotion. Quote
TheLegoDr Posted May 31, 2012 Posted May 31, 2012 Onatu I would also recommend Shelob Attacks and Cosmic Cube Escape. They have some great looking minifigures with some nice play value. Shelob is impressive, to say the least. If you aren't into LOTR, then your money can be spent elsewhere. I happen to really like the Car and Caravan set, but that is because it reminds me of one of my favorite sets as a child. I'm not a big Superman fan, but the Superman/Wonder Woman vs Lex Luthor set is neat. I didn't assemble the mech, but the figures are quite nice, especially Wonder Woman. There are a lot of great sets out there. I would recommend getting them all Quote

Onatu, Some of the smaller city sets are pretty nice - the new garbage truck, the tipper, the dirt bike transport... the creator houses are nice as well and tend to have higher element counts than other sets for the money (I believe). The lighthouse island is a fantastic set $40 and you can pick up the log cabin for $20 on sale at walmart now... Quote
Vindicare Posted June 1, 2012 Posted June 1, 2012 Not so much of a which set to buy, but how to pull the trigger. On 10221. After seeing it on display several times at a Brand store and its ever so impressive size. But $400 is just so much money for a single set. I bought(at different times) two 10195s and both times I kind of regretted paying $250... What did you tell yourself that made you pull the trigger? Quote
TomRoid Posted June 2, 2012 Posted June 2, 2012 I've finally got enough money to nearly get a 3300003 LEGO Store Set (at £50). But I still haven't got the 10184 Cinema. Should I wait until I have enough money for the Cinema and when a reasonably priced one pops up or should I buy a LEGO Store 3300003 now? Quote
nicoga3000 Posted June 2, 2012 Posted June 2, 2012 I'll be at the Lego store in an hour or so. Any suggestions for a $30-50 Technic set? A neat gearbox or something unique would be ideal! Quote
urukhai Posted June 3, 2012 Posted June 3, 2012 I am abit conflicted over what set to get. I haven't heard much about the orc forge set but it looks pretty cool. However, the Weathertop also has a great design and minifigures. The Weathertop seems a little small itself though and the cost seems a little too high. What set do you prefer or think I should get? I have Weathertop and it's a nice expansive LotR set. It has a good selection of stuff and the build is good. Orc Forge looks like a good set, but isn't well rounded as far as LotR goes. I'd get Weathertop then Forge. Should I get the Orc Forge or Robbers hideout? I'd go with the Hideout. Of course the answer really is to get both if you can swing it. The hideout is a fun build/set. The figs are cool, especially the cop. The car is awesome. It has the new 'brick' bricks too. Quote
Zeya Posted June 6, 2012 Posted June 6, 2012 I'm trying to decide between these two scenarios: Scenario 1: 2 x "Monster 4" 1 x "Banana Balance" Scenario 2: 1 x "Monster 4" 2 x "Banana Balance" I'm considering these as parts packs for MOCcing (could care less about the gameplay). I just need to get above a certain price threshold to trigger certain coupon codes. (This is on yoyo.com by the way. Have a groupon that I need to cash in before month's end and they're having another sale too until the 14th.) I like Banana Balance for the leaves you get so I can make more trees. And I like Monster 4 for the neat heads and a healthy amount of other parts. I particularly like the pumpkin heads. I kind of feel like Monster 4 is a better value overall. But then greenery is always foremost in my mind. Hmm... Quote

I think it is easier to find a situation where you need a lot of leaves than it is to get in a situation where you need a lot of monster heads. Quote
