HawkLord Posted July 27, 2012 Posted July 27, 2012 So, my question might be alittle more involved. I have some spare change and can buy a couple Lego sets to knock off my list. Should I buy them now at the Lego store and get another polybag Sopwith Camel or should I wait till next month to see if there's a better polybag promo? I really don't need another Sopwith, but if there is no polybag next month, then I will have lost out. Quote

Buy them now, and if there does happen to be a better polybag promo just return the sets you bought and buy them again a few days later. Quote
Faefrost Posted July 28, 2012 Posted July 28, 2012 Is 7961 Darth Maul's Sith Infiltrator a good buy for $35? Saw it on clearence at Target and was wondering if it's worth it. At that price it's worth it if just forthe parts and figs. The ship itself is ok, but was just grossly overpriced at released. The minifigs in the set are however fantastic. Some of the absolute best SW figs. If nothing else the set has a ton of assorted blew plates and hinges. Quote

Drudoo Posted July 28, 2012 Posted July 28, 2012 I am going to buy a new star wars set on monday and i need to figure out what to get. At first i was set on buying the UCS SSD 10221 since it is a great big model and good for displaying. But after looking at the brick count (high price, low brick count) i decided to take a look at the UCS DS 10188. Some pros; 10188 more bricks, more figs, takes up less space (when displayed) 10221 looks really good at display, build looks interesting and new. Some cons; 10188 does not look polised/finished (when displaying), the build could be repetitive. 10221 less bricks, scale seems weird with figs. At the moment i dont have space for new things on display, so i am mostly building models and dismantling them quickly. So the important thing is that the build is fun and doesn't feel repetitive. Other UCS in my collection (might be displayed with them when space is available; 10179, 10225 and 10215. Quote
HawkLord Posted July 29, 2012 Posted July 29, 2012 As a huge Star Wars fan, I'd always go with the Death Star. It's iconic, easily recognizable, is a great talking piece as it showcases so many different scenes, and pretty much completes most of the basic cast of characters. Put the Death Star on a lazy-susan and you'll have people talking for hours. The Super Star Destroyer looks nice, but for at the end of the day, it's still just a big ship. Quote
Zzz Posted July 29, 2012 Posted July 29, 2012 Hi guys, I mainly buy SW and Indy, but a great set from another theme as well from time to time (PoP = Battle of Alamuth), I am torn between - 4842 Hogwarts Castle (2010) - 4195 Queen Annes Revenge - 9516 Jabba's Palace Please mind though that even as a SW geek I am not too connected to the Tatooine scenes from Episode VI. I don't really care about them and I find the palace to be a bit of a boring build and vastly overpriced. I am not in desperate need of the figs, as I am more an army guy and less an alien-guy. No intentions for the Rancor set as well. I am mainly looking for a good set to build, display, play with, re-design. Standalone mainly. Your thoughts? Quote

I may be biased due to my love for Pirates, but I think the QAR works best as a stand-alone of the three. Ships just tend to do that in my opinion, whether they're actual ships or starships. While I do enjoy a good castle, I don't think Hogwarts Castle (any of them, really) is all that aesthetically impressive - and they all look unfinished and just a part of something bigger to me. Jabba's Palace, I'd say you've more or less talked yourself out of buying; if you don't need the figs, don't care for the setting and don't find the build in neither this nor it's upcoming companion piece particularly interesting... then why bother? Now, if it were me faced with these choices, I might go with Jabba's Palace for the figs. Either that or the QAR for the actual set. But since you want the one best as a "Stand-Alone" set, go with the QAR. Out of the three the ship looks the most "finished". Jabba's Palace, whilst having great figures and a great design, is at the end of the day made to be played with by kids. So it won't look quite as impressive as the QAR. Hogwarts has the same problem. It doesn't look finished. It looks like part of Hogwarts. So, if it's meant for display...Queen Anne's Revenge. Quote

Since you're gonna re-design it, I'd say Hogwarts. It's instantly recognisable as a display piece and you could mod it to make it more substantial if you wanted. Out of the three I'd say it's most worth the price you pay. Quote
Leo604 Posted July 30, 2012 Posted July 30, 2012 I'm thinking about buying Droid Escape tomorrow; however, is the playability and generalness of Desert Skiff worth spending the extra albeit little money on? Quote

Let me just say it right now: get Desert Skiff before Droid Escape. I'm aware that Droid Escape has (awesome) Sandtroopers...but Desert Skiff comes with completely outstanding figs! And the build is more interesting. Do what you want, but I HIGHLY recommend Desert Skiff. Quote

TheBoyWonder Posted July 30, 2012 Posted July 30, 2012 Gandalf Arrives, or Shelob Attacks? I have no LoTR Minifigs, so want as many of the main characters quickly. My favourite Film is Return Of The King, so sets from tht film are preffered. Quote

K-Nut Posted July 30, 2012 Posted July 30, 2012 I'm thinking about buying Droid Escape tomorrow; however, is the playability and generalness of Desert Skiff worth spending the extra albeit little money on? I personally would go with the Skiff. To me, it has a much better design and better figs, though droid escape has some awesome figs too. Desert Skiff all in all is a better set, IMHO. Quote
HawkLord Posted July 30, 2012 Posted July 30, 2012 Thanks for the reply. Have you tried to build any of the sets? I am wondering which build is most fun and changeling. I actually haven't, though the Death Star has been on my wishlist for awhile now. As someone who likes sets that have a bit of a story to tell, the DS would be more enjoyable of a build to me. I'm thinking about buying Droid Escape tomorrow; however, is the playability and generalness of Desert Skiff worth spending the extra albeit little money on? We've already seen the Droid Escape on sale at TRU and as a lackluster, almost shelf-warming set, I have to think we'll see it on sale again. Meanwhile, the Skiff is the cheapest way to get a Boba Fett minifigure plus makes a good companion piece to the Jabba's Palace. It's going to be one of the hotter sets in it's price point. Quote

Mr. Elijah Timms Posted August 2, 2012 Posted August 2, 2012 Alright, I need some advice. I'm in the fortunate position of having about $250 put aside in the Lego fund, and I need to start making some decisions about what I'm going to do with it. I should probably point out beforehand that I'm primarily a City guy but dabble across all sorts of themes.... and I should definitely say that I typically have a self-enforced policy of staying away from REALLY big (aka $$$) sets. With that being said, I have never purchased a modular set before. I'm torn between some sort of combination of the following sets: 10223 Kingdoms Joust 10193 Medieval Market Village 7398 Passenger Train 4207 City Garage 10224 Town Hall 10211 Grand Emporium(or perhaps even 10197 Fire Brigade) 10228 Haunted House My original plan was the new Garage and some added funds thrown in to get the Haunted House. But then I keep going back to the Joust, which makes me wonder if I should be getting the MMV since it's such an iconic set. But then part of me keeps saying if I'm spending so much money it should probably go into my City layout-- and why should I spend all that money on the Haunted House if it's going to dwarf the rest of my structures, and if I do go modular shouldn't it be for something that can serve as a focal point of sorts, like the Town Hall or the Emporium???? I'd just love a little feedback from some of you that already have some or all of these sets. It really is a great asset to hear what previous customers have to say here at EB. Thank you! Quote
TheBoyWonder Posted August 2, 2012 Posted August 2, 2012 I would go for MMV and Grand Emporium if you can. Two amazing sets. Quote
Hive Posted August 2, 2012 Posted August 2, 2012 Could not the MVV serve as a "old" part of your city, perhaps? Or maybe as a medieval play/market in a park? Quote

I wouldn't buy 10193 just because it's an iconic set. Buy it IF you find it interesting and like it. I didn't buy 8038, even though every LSW fan has praised it. It just doesn't interest me enough to get it. Now, I would keep putting money in the fund till 10228 comes out in September and get 4207 along with it, since you're a City/layout maker. Any of the Modulars would be worth a purchase as well. Quote
