It's just a continuity flaw that stems from George's prequel ideas. I know this has been written about to death, so I'll keep it short and not too ranty: in A New Hope, Obi-Wan is clearly around 70 and Darth Vader seems to be at least in his 50s, though with him it's harder to tell. The way the prequels are set up, it turns out Obi-Wan is 53 and Anakin is 43. It just doesn't match up, so neither do other things, like the way they talk about 'the past' and the Imperials think Darth Vader has an ancient religion.

But you know, it doesn't really matter too much and can be explained away. The Emperor got public sentiment to turn against Jedi, how would it look if he was revealed to use similar Force powers as Jedi? People fear the Empire because of the tyranny, not because of the Force, so maybe it isn't exactly broadcast that Darth Vader goes around using the force. Sure, the imperial command knows, but the galaxy is still a big place. Jedi are kind of mystical to the common people even in the Prequels.

The problem is that almost all the stories we see are Jedi centric, so we as the audience think that Jedi are obviously well-known throughout everywhere. I wish Rebels hadn't gone the Jedi/Sith route, but even so, it doesn't mean that everybody everywhere would know about these people and frequently come into contact with them. What's great about A New Hope is that it (in pretty classic form) focuses on common people thrown into and reacting to something that's a lot bigger and more mysterious than themselves. We get to view Jedi as something intriguing and therefore cool. In the prequels and the Clone Wars it's all Jedi Jedi Jedi in your face all the time, so while their powers are still cool, they don't seem all that special.

Having seen all 6 movies (7 if you count the animated Clone Wars movie), and the entire Clone Wars series, I wholeheartedly agree.

Jedi and Sith are both cool, but they've been given more than enough time in the spotlight. I'd really like to watch a show about life under the Empire, and life in the Rebel Alliance. What is it like to be a Stormtrooper, trying to keep the Rebel 'terrorists' at bay and put food on the table for their family? What is it like to be a Rebel trooper, trying to defend the freedom of their family from the horrors of the Empire? Those are the things I hope the show will explore.

Just ignore the prequels. ;p

Honestly, I tried so hard to love them or even like them for years and years. I made excuses for them. But they're just not good and don't even make sense with the original trilogy lore. I wouldn't mind if Disney freakin' rebooted those without rebooting the original trilogy. In fact I kind of hope they do (they won't since the prequels are still money makers and popular with young people).

Some episodes of the Clone Wars were 100x better (though there's plenty of crap in there too).

In terms of how this relates to Rebels.. Idunno. Whatever. I loved some aspects of the Clone Wars series (basically the 10% of the episodes that were good, 2% taht were great :P). I wouldn't mind seeing some connections there I guess. Ashoka was a fine character that is sadly infinitely more interesting than Prequel-Anakin who is still just an insane guy who kills younglings because reasons. It would be neat to see her story come to an end in this series. Other than that I'd hope they'd ignore most of the prequels.

As for the general knowledge of Jedi even among the Imperials... that might be due to a North Korea-like control on information. I'd imagine after the Jedi were destroyed they really continued just slandering them like crazy, maybe to the point of making them seem like an "ancient religion" and nothing more than a bunch of cultists. Honestly, I'd love to see some of the inner workings of the Empires, how they controlled information and the populace. It didn't SEEM like they did so through fear and power all the time.

Hurray, they've invented another new planet and we can definitely feel sympathy and care about it since they told us it's a major city even though we've never seen it before! :sarcasm:

Also, that piece of concept art reminds me of a mid-battle shot of Harnaidan during the Battle of Muunilist from the '03 series, just with a combination of Coruscanti and Alderaanian buildings instead of the Greek-inspired architecture.

Which is exactly the mistake they made in the Prequels by using Naboo instead of Alderaan. Already on to a great start here. :hmpf:

That was an issue with TCW, as well. The SW crew seriously need to stop making new stuff and work with what they have. The worst part is that they break old stuff in order to make way for their unnecessary new stuff.

My take on the Prequel era Jedi was quite simply, what we saw on screen was all there were. Jedi were exceedingly rare. Probably less than 100 total, counting Padawans and Younglings. They were huge military force multipliers (as Timothy Zahn described in the Thrawn trilogy) hence every one of Knight rank and above being considered a General. But there just overall weren't that many of them. And what there were lived a very cloistered monastic existence, with very little direct visible contact with the 100's of Republic worlds. Even before the rise of the Emperor, Jedi would have been more legend than reality for most citizens. On par with Santa Maul and the Easter JarJar.

New Star Wars: Rebels character revealed: Chopper (the grumpy Astromech Droid):

http://starwars.com/news/star-wars-rebels-meet-chopper-grumpy-astromech-droid.html

And some other Rebels news:

"Series of vignettes airing from August onwards showcasing minimum of four main characters. This will see the launch of books for young readers around this time, which will include back-stories and prequels to the full Rebel series. Trying to launch this to quite a high degree of fanfare.

Early October we will see what has been termed a "movie" but is actually only an hour long feature episode drop on the full Disney Channel. Disney XD will then start the ongoing series.

As the situation sits only one episode is in the can although a lot is obviously work in progress.

And for characters:

"On board the Ghost we will encounter:

- Kannan Jarrus

- Hera Syndulla - a Twilek whose family we have met before, and may well meet again.

- Zeb - the gunner, and trusty sidekick.

On board the Phantom we will encounter:

- Ezra Bridger - a renegade Imperial Cadet, who learns of their Force sensitivities through a highly sought Holocron - the very item The Inquisitor is commanded to retrieve by his Emperor. Bridger dresses in some customised Imperial gear.

Again, thank you for these commander. I always loved how the Clone Wars had a sort of serious tone and I fear that may be lost with Rebels with the shift of channel. I understand Cartoon Network has a sort of childish flow with most of it's shows, but that has always been skipped with their morning shows. I see most or all of Disney XD as a very 'silly' channel, and not something I can imagine a Star Wars show on. Of course that's not to say Cartoon Network isn't 'silly', but it's morning shows never really were. We'll see how this plays out soon enough, I'll most certainly be buying the Ghost anyhow.

As for the characters, I wish we could get images of them already. The only one I'm really looking forward to is Hera Syndulla. I really look forward to seeing her, as I love Twi'leks. I would also like to see where Ahsoka is during this time period. Since she left the Jedi Order, she wouldn't have been with any clones during Order 66, which means (by theory) she should still be alive. This in particular, I believe, should be addressed in Rebels. I just hope they keep Ahsoka and Ventress alive, I always found that since most girls do die off in the main Star Wars universe, that it be best to keep some alive. And if anyone to stay, I'd definitely want it to be Ahsoka.

New major character reveal for Rebels: Kanan.

Also confirmed that the voice of Kanan is Freddie Prinze Jr.

http://www.usatoday....t-look/4802651/

Oh boy... another Jedi... just before the OT... /sigh

:ugh: :ugh: :ugh:

Is anyone else old enough to remember how cool the Star Wars universe was when Force users were few and far between, and the great mystery of the place, and instead we had to make do with how cool everyone else was? Like the Smugglers and Rebels and Bounty Hunters etc? How it had evil characters and heroes that didn't actually hold a lightsaber?

I'm not surprised that they have a Jedi main character, I just hope he's one of the few ones in this show. He's kind of seeming like a Corran Horn-type character, and if so I'll probably grow to like him.

Posted

I'm slightly disturbed how they seem to be so keen on mimicing the OT characters.

We've got a Han-like character (though with the force). We've got a Chewie-like character. We've got an R2-D2-like character. We've got a Luke-like character. I wouldn't be surprised if that Twi'lek female is going to be comparable to Leia and fall for the Han-like character.

I'm quite excited by these characters. Sure, they kinda mimic the archetypes like Luke and Han, but they're also unique in many ways. I'm very excited to see what Zeb is like. Is he confirmed to be Bothan? Because he's really purple, and I don't remember purple Bothans being a thing.

Also, I really hope that Ahsoka makes a cameo in this show. Even if she only appeared for a few episodes, it'd be interesting to have her interact with these characters, especially Ezra seeing as he's never known the galaxy without the Empire. It could prove a very interesting story arc.

Okay so the purple d00d isn't a Chewie (besides being muscle) but is anyone else thinking this character is just so incredibly uncreative?

He's a tough d00d with an Australian accent. Now I'm sure tough Australians exist but it's too often that in a show or movie the tough d00d is specifically Australian and often the only one. :P

I believe it's either a book or movie notes or something... so not entirely canon. But there were supposedly around 30,000-40,000 Jedi. That's still an insanely small amount compared to the trillions upon trillons of non-Jedi though.

And it kind of makes sense. The Jedi Temple has a fair amount of Jedi and it's a huge building. Then we know (at least in soft canon) that there are several other Jedi Temples around, and the one on Corrosant is just the main one or headquarters.

Hera is revealed on star wars.com. Check it out.

BTW, anyone know more about the release date of this series? Wikipedia says it will air in fall but I saw a clip on tv yesterday (on the Disney channel) that said, it will start airing in spring. I am confused.

I think the pilot will be out in spring, with the series proper in autumn, similarly to how TCW had cinematic release for it's pilot episodes (edited into one film).

Hm....that's not what I've heard. As far as I know, the series will premier with a "movie" (probably meaning a double-length episode) on Disney Channel in late summer/early autumn, with the series itself showing on Disney XD in autumn. This is the first I've heard any mention of spring.
