This discussion is for both the movies and the book. (... and the Lego videogame while we're at it...)

I included lots of characters in the poll but in my opinion it's really between Frodo, Aragorn and Sam.

You can pick more than 1 character.

Frodo

I chose Sam because of obvious reasons. Tolkien himself even said the story is really about Sam being the hero. But he accomplished a lot to keep Frodo to finish the task. Granted I haven't read the books, so I only know of what happened in the movies.

And I also chose Gollum, only because he helped lead them away from the army. He ventured into an area he already had been in (and tortured) and was still willing to help them, if only only for his "precious."

1. Aragorn because he was always leading in the fight against Mordor, even if most of their fights were accomplished through the efforts of whatever army he was in front of.

2. Sam because of his constant determination, courage, and loyalty in Frodo. Good minifigure too.

Sam. He was the one ringbearer that was not corrupted by it, and freely chose to give it up without regret, doubt or the application of force. His courage and strength of will overcame the ring.

I chose three.

Sam for many obvious reasons. I'm currently re reading the books, and much of the Two Towers stays close to Sam's thoughts on the situation. Plus, without him, Frodo would've failed.

Second, I chose Eowyn. I chose her because she had the bravery and courage to defy the military rules and fight for what she believed in: those she loves. Plus, she had the bravery to stand against the Withc-King and defeat him in combat.

And thirdly, I chose Faramir. He has some of the most courage in all of LOTR, because he is able to withstand the temptation of the Ring and let Frodo go, but he also risks everything, mainly any love his father ever had for him, because he knew that it was the right thing to do.

Between Frodo, Aragorn and Sam, I'd pick Aragorn first, Sam second and Frodo third. If i had to choose between all the characters, Frodo wouldn't even make it to the top 5. After all, Sam ended up doing all the hard work.

I picked several characters, mostly hobbits.

My choices were...

Frodo

I might be wrong, but I think Frodo's potrayal in the book is a bit more determined and generally braver than in the film (which focused a bit more on Frodo's fragility). He manages to get the One Ring into the chamber of Mount Doom, and although the ring corrupts him there, others wouldn't even had made it this far in the first place.

Sam

It's one thing if you're just some guy who's destined to save the world (like Frodo above) or if you this guy's best friend, who joins his friend on his epic quest, helps him and also saves his life various times. He also delivers a can of megablocks-whopping to Shelob (the successor of a demonic monster spider from the dawn of time). And he does all these things without any specific strength, wisdom or other powers, but only with sheer determination.

Merry

There aren't many mortals who didn't despair in face of the Witch King of Angmar. And there are even fewer who managed to hurt him. This little guy did though, and he also played a major role in the scourging of the Shire.

Eowyn

Similiar to Merry, she faced the Witch King, but she's also the one who delivers the final blow, freeing the world from his foul existence.

Bilbo

He's even more of a laid back "normal guy" than Sam and Frodo, but he goes on an adventure, outsmart trolls, fights goblins and evil spiders and keeps his cool facing an old evil dragon (okay, he was invisible while doing the latter, but still).

EDIT: I just saw that the question was "who's the most heroic", but for whatever reason I mis-read it as "who's the bravest". Oh well. In that case I'd added Gandalf and Aragorn to my choices.
