Brickdoctor Posted February 15, 2013 Posted February 15, 2013 The separate topic created for 10240 has been merged with this topic. When TLG officially releases the set, I'm sure one of the Ambassadors will create a topic specifically for the set. Until then, let's keep discussion of the set in this topic. Personally, I think the nose area of the X-wing looks too fat, especially the tip. I'm not completely certain of the accuracy or inaccuracy of that part of the model, but it definitely looks off to me. Especially the layering of the wedge plates on top of the nose which only taper for a few studs and then continue straight down the rest of the nose. The nose as a whole seems blocky and squarish to me. Quote
calculon Posted February 15, 2013 Posted February 15, 2013 I do think the same. The nose of the older one is much more blocky but at the same time it looks more coherent to me. Quote
MadMan Posted February 15, 2013 Posted February 15, 2013 I think the UCS line should be geared toward the more bigger ships/buildings of the saga. So many other options could have been explored before doing a redo of an older UCS set. Here are examples from each of the movies. Episode I: Trade Federation Ship, Naboo Cruiser, Jedi Temple Episode II: Acclamator Star Destroyer, SPHA-T, Slave 1 Episode III: Venator Star Destroyer(my personal hope for a UCS), Invisible Hand, Jedi Temple again Episode IV: Sandcrawler Episode V: AT-AT, Cloud City Episode VI: Medical Frigate, Various Mon Calamari Cruisers There are even more possibilies if you include starfighters/smaller vehicles. (ARC-170, Eta-2s, A-Wings, Different Tie series, land speeder, AT-TE, RGS....etc. It has to sell, though. So simply using the UCS series to make big ships isn't a good direction to go in. They have to be recognisable and iconic - they have to encourage buyers to shell out the extra money, and I doubt they'd do so for quite a lot of your suggestions. We probably aren't going to get a bigger/more detailed Sandcrawler than we already have, and that's really just minifig scale, and not an instantly recognisable/visually appealing design compared to a B-Wing, the Falcon or Slave I. Fuppylodders Posted February 15, 2013 Posted February 15, 2013 Sorry to disagree but I am a collector myself and I have collected various things for a long time. I can assure you that even collectors do have an expectation that the items they pay a lot of money for would increase (or at least maintain their value) in the future. When a set is released under the name of Ultimate Collector Series that implies that it is a collectible item and therefore it is released either in limited numbers or for a limited time (the latter in Lego UCS case) and in the majority of cases that implies that its value will be either the same or increase in the future. Therefore although Lego may not specify in writing the way a product is marketed implies that it is very unlikely that product would be released again. Call it "a gentleman's agreement". So it is quite understandable that a lot of collectors of UCS sets would not be very happy with re-releases. And by the way I see no reason (either than greed and milking a cash cow) for Lego to re-release a UCS set when there are so many more "important" ships that could be made into UCS. And there will be many more in years to come when the new films are released. What happened to Jedi temple, the large separatist/trade federation ships and so many more? http://www.thefreedictionary.com/collector Check it out. Adding ultimate or series to collector in no way implies it is limited edition or for a limited time (The very first 10,000 or so 10179 MF's had printed on them, *limited edition* and were numbered, now THAT implies it is of a rarity value, and limited in production run). But then, you could argue that every lego set by precedence is also only going to be available for a set period of time which makes them rare collector items (probably more applicable to the higher end costing sets), due to the fact that they have not continued producing a single same set over and over throughout the years. Ive been through it before, and I'll say it again: Rather than peoples random interpretations in or out of context regardless of what the majority 'think' it means due to previous unchanged precedence and their assumption on implied terms, Ultimate doesn't have to mean 'final'.... However can be interpreted as 'the greatest extreme/maximum/of the greatest possible size/utmost/extreme, which isn't sooo final/end/last Collector also doesn't mean limited. It means it is something which someone collects, *regardless of rarity*. *limited edition* dictates rarity. TLG clearly have the same view as written above... However i very much do agree with the fact there are far more better vehicles that could be released before rehashes get done... Quote
mortesv Posted February 15, 2013 Posted February 15, 2013 I didn't get the old UCS X-Wing, so I'm happy this one is coming. Sure, I'd have been even more excited about a UCS Nebulon B frigate, but oh well. That frigate would indeed be awesome!! Quote
Bob De Quatre Posted February 15, 2013 Posted February 15, 2013 Yes we need a UCS Nebulon B frigate!! Quote
Pumpkin Pie Posted February 15, 2013 Posted February 15, 2013 Though maybe a repeat, that is one cool x-wing! Quote
howie28 Posted February 15, 2013 Posted February 15, 2013 Personally I'm ecstatic that we're getting a new X-Wing. I wouldn't fork out $1000 for a brand new old X)Wing on eBay, so this gives me (and probably many others) a chance to get a detailed, iconic ship to display proudly. Quote

My hope is that we'll get a matching TIE Fighter (regular not interceptor) in October. That would be one great 2013 for a lot of us! Speaking of rehashes, I'm probably a huge minority, but I'd love to see a Millenium Falcon UCS re-release but perhaps at a slightly different scale. Maybe a 2500-3000 piece MF mounted on a black display stand angled nicely. Not quite as massive as the previous UCS MF, but still with plenty of nice detail. Lastly, we see a lot of talk about wanting a UCS Slave 1 or A-Wing (and I don't disagree, would buy both in an instant). That said, I'd like a UCS Imperial Probe Droid!!! First one was quite success (Death star was released in 2008, one year after falcon but you can still buy star in lego shops but falcon was sold out three years ago) so why not make it even bigger and more expensive? Especially if falcon gets some role in SW7. X Wing is selling like hot cake, Tie and falcon also and it is normal that they are cashing it as much as they can. Not because they are greedy or evil but because it is company interested in profit, just like any other. And great news for all of us is that they are doing well because just 15 years ago I had a feeling that Lego will go bankrupt. Quote

However i very much do agree with the fact there are far more better vehicles that could be released before rehashes get done... I am well aware of how the terms are defined in the English dictionary. However, you are looking at the terms separately. if you look at those terms together i.e. UCS they imply much more than when they are used separately. So in a way it is a form of marketing ploy which leads people to believe that something is much more better than it would have been if it didn't have those terms in its name. There has been considerable research in respect to the psychological effect that some words have when used in the marketing of a product and although Lego may not agree with the fans' interpretation of the term UCS they certainly used it for a specific purpose. It's like the ready made lasagne here in the UK. It was marketed as beef lasagne and people loved it and never complained but when they found out that it had horse meat in it instead all hell broke loose. lol As a matter of fact am I right in thinking that Lego dropped the UCS term recently and there was a great deal of controversy or discussion about it? Personally I think that those "unwritten agreements" matter a lot to the fan base and they define the reliability and trustworthiness of a company. However we can argue "until the cows come home" as they say about this subject and no one would be a winner or loser in the end. What I am concerned about though is the fact that the Lego designers are getting damn lazy and rather than use their time to bring out a new ship (which as I said the SW universe has plenty of significant ones) they chose to rehash an old one instead just because they know that it is a cash cow (i.e. it is a sure sell that will go like hot cakes). To me that is pure laziness and "who cares for the fans"ness kind of attitude. But this is what happens when a company has the monopoly and they remain pretty much unchallenged. And that is why I hope that Lego's competitors get stronger faster and that way they can challenge Lego in the market. Then we will see how fast their designers will pull their finger out... Apologies for all the negativity. I'm not usually one for complaints. However every now and again one needs to vent I suppose. Quote
TheLegoDr Posted February 15, 2013 Posted February 15, 2013 Just saw the pictures on fbtb and it looks good. Although I'm not a huge SW nut, so I guess I don't know how different it is than the system scale set that was released last year. I know, it is more detailed with more pieces and is larger, but overall aesthetic, I don't know how different it is sitting on my shelf. I really like 2012's version of the x-wing though. It was one of my first SW sets. I can find a lot of other sets to spend $200 on, but it looks good. Quote
wildboar Posted February 15, 2013 Posted February 15, 2013 I don't think their designers are lazy, just that consumers never get tired of buying few iconic spaceships and the rest is just for variety. And how original can designer be with x-wing which had so many models so far? I am certain that if 10240 sells well, we can expect new ucs x-wing much quicker than we have waited for this one. Quote
Haderach Posted February 15, 2013 Posted February 15, 2013 In the video, why does he reference it as the new "direct" LEGO Star Wars model. Is he implying that it will only be available via LEGO directly and not sold in stores? Quote
Sam892 Posted February 15, 2013 Posted February 15, 2013 I don't think LEGO released another version just as a cash cow, I'd like to think its more of an update. There are probably lots of collectors that started in 2007 or 2010, and didn't get the chance to purchase these great ships back in the day. I think this version is a compromise for fans. A chance for those who missed the original to pick this one up, while keeping the original unique. Both use different bricks and colour schemes so, apart from them both being X-wings they are very different. LEGO will always hold its price and even if it goes down in price because of a remake, it will still be worth more than its original RRP. Quote
GRogall Posted February 15, 2013 Posted February 15, 2013 In the video, why does he reference it as the new "direct" LEGO Star Wars model. He Means that it will be available to Lego Brand stores and through Shop @ Home for the first six month before it will be released to other retailers! Quote
Artizan Posted February 15, 2013 Posted February 15, 2013 i really don't like the nose section, though it matters not, because i never buy ucs sets. Quote

And that is why I hope that Lego's competitors get stronger faster and that way they can challenge Lego in the market. Then we will see how fast their designers will pull their finger out... I hate it to correct you here, but not a single designer in any company makes decisions about the product lineup. Those decisions are made by the management. Second, and more importantly, you might already be aware that what you would like - more competition to Lego so their products are becoming more interesting for your personal taste - is a statement that is hard to understand. Actually, I am sure TLC is having a lot of competition and that's why they need to make money and not please a few hardcore fans. Making money means developing and releasing sets that will sell, and this one will do. For me it's a miracle that they didn't make remakes already in the UCS line! They need to make money, we all want them to make money to live on with our hobby. Also consider please that tastes are different and for many it's important to get a cool X-Wing rather than a strange B-level ship that was seen in the background. Please also remember that if a similiar model was available 12 years ago, it doesn't necessarily mean we were all into Lego at that time or had the money or space. Releasing a new police station every 2 or 3 years makes perfectly sense, and I find a 12 years for a new X-Wing considerably harmless. Let's be happy for all our mates here who can now get one without paying the horrible amounts on Ebay or BL! Cheer up, mate! Quote
The_Chosen_1 Posted February 15, 2013 Posted February 15, 2013 Hm....it's a great looking model, but I think I'll have to give it a pass. There's way too much other stuff coming down the pipeline, and the recent System-scale X-Wing looks just fine sitting on my shelf. Of course, if there's a killer discount on it someday I might cave. Quote
Brix Posted February 15, 2013 Posted February 15, 2013 (edited) I wonder whether TLC used the 2012 X-wing #9493 to gauge current popularity of the X-wing before deciding to go ahead and release an update of the UCS X-wing. Whether it was planned that way or not, I'm sure it informed them just how popular the X-wing still is among Lego buyers. Edited February 15, 2013 by Brix Quote
Navy Trooper Fenson Posted February 15, 2013 Posted February 15, 2013 (edited) Oh wow another X-Wing. Didn´t expect that. Why do they have to release the boring, "iconic" sets always during the May 4th promotion and keep the good one for fall? Just so the stupid kids can get their hand on the exclusive metallic blue chrome Jango or whatever they are giving out and stick it up their noses. It´s just so plain and same to the earlier version. YES there are some changes but that is like comparing 2004 Dagobah X-Wing and 2006 Hoth X-Wing. And what do they mean by it being available "via phone"? You can take your telephone and order stuff by talking to someone from S@H. I can´t believe how LEGO tries to push this outdated method in times of the internet.
