Was just wondering what the consensus was on the best AT-ST that lego has produced (for mini-figs, not UCS). And do we think there will be a new one soon, either stand-alone or w/the Ewok Village?

Personally, i like the one of 8038 'Battle of Endor' the most. It stands in the gap between optical accuracy (UCS) and playability (compatibility with other system scale play sets). It's walking mechanism is a bit weird but can easily be modded out with today's parts.

8038 was and still is one of the best sets ever made. In those fine reviews:

In general i don't buy any UCS (although i like and have some of 10xxx line) sets. For the future, a battle set containing an AT-ST would be great, i think. Be it with Ewoks or not (the vehicle initally first appeared on Endor in EP VI), the walker ought to have a bunch of Stormies with it. Before this derails into another 'Future SW sets' thread, i better turn silent.

The AT-ST first appears in Episode V in the Battle of Hoth. It could technically be in a Hoth set if TLG wanted to go that route.

I personally prefer 7657. The angles are a bit off but I like the look of it better.

I also prefer the 7657, it has a better look, the one from the endor set looks too skinny.

Whatsoever, i guess the Hoth scenario is exploited already. I'd still prefer Stormies along with an AT-ST, which are much more uncommon these days.

No, it was there in the 1980 version. Very briefly, but it was there.

Ki-Adi Mundi, the AT-ST has always been in ESB, way before the SE. I remember seeing it in 1980 and thinking somehow an AT-AT had been cut in half and its rear was stumbling backwards! There was also the Kenner toy, then called a Scout Walker, released in 1982. I had always wanted to see more of it, and my wishes came true when ROTJ opened.

As for my favorite LEGO AT-ST, I like the 2007 and 2009 versions. Each has its merits and both are a vast improvement over the 2001 model. I would have to say that I love the turning head feature on the 2007 version as well as the pilot minifigure, but I don't care too much for the virtually unarticulated legs. Plus, they look way too thick. However, when I look at it standing, I think it looks very much like the full-size prop built for the movie. The 2009 model's legs are a little more accurate and gets bonus points for being in one of the best Star Wars sets ever.

I think we are due for an updated AT-ST, and I would love to see it get a Hoth treatment. They should have included one in this year's Battle of Hoth, IMO.

That's funny you say that about the scene with the AT-ST in Empire. As a kid I thought the same thing, that an AT-AT had been blasted apart and only a two legged walker was left. I wonder how common that was.

Anyway, I find the walker in the Endor bunker set to be the "best" as far as it's shape and detail.

I really like the 8038 at-st, it seems really well done and a nice size. Not wanting to hijack this thread, however my question is similar, what about the best moc at-st?

I am shocked this is even a question. To me it is 8038 by a wide margin.

Do I think they will make another one? You bet your butt. If the a-wing can have 4 remakes, so can the AT-ST. I think we will get a stand alone and one in a battle set for sure.

I feel that the legs on the 8038 are too skinny, and the head on it is far too narrow. But they did get the shape of the head down much better in that version.

Still, my favorite is 7657, despite some obvious flaws.

The AT-STs legs were skinny anyway, impossible to be too skinny as a lego model, Technic beams are probably the right width, if anything.

I was about to post the same thing as Kai about it not being in ESB, but yea one brief blink and you miss it scene, in the original version. In the SE version though, they added much more. As for the topic I would say the 2009 version hands down. If they do a new version I would like to see them finally make it with a cockpit for 2 minifigs.

Ok, i must have missed that glimpse of it when first watching the original version of EP V as a kid. Most likely i was overwhelmed by the fantanstic action taking place on screen.

I prefer 8038 for the shape of the head. The 7657 just has too big of a chin. It's the Jay Leno of walkers. That said, 7657 will always have a special place in my heart, as it's the first set I bought to bring me [back] into LEGO :)

The 7127 seems like something I would've made as a ten year old if I'd had the parts.

The 7657 is actually pretty cool, and looks like a beefed up armored walker. The Imperials would've won on Endor if they'd had some of those.

The one from 8038 is clearly the most movie accurate, but I look forward to the next one with some nice improvements.

8039 is too studdy IMO

Well I have to agree that 8039, a.k.a the Venator-Class Republic Attack Cruiser, is a BIT studdy compared to the AT-ST' s !

I've got 7657 and 8039, both have their pros and cons; however IMHO I like 7657 better because it just feels more like the actual AT-ST, and 8039 has too many studs.

8038 is the best so far, but the rubbish "walking" feature harms the design somewhat I think. It's not too hard to mod out, but that's kind of cheating in a comparison really. Here's hoping the next AT-ST is another leap forward.

I remember not being long out of my dark-age and thinking 7657 was an amazing model that would be impossible for Lego to improve upon . I will always have a soft spot for my first AT-ST but I think the one in 8038 was a vast improvement (despite the fact it didn't have a proper pilot ).

8038 however honestly I don't really like any of them that much. There's scale issues. You have to fit 2 pilots side by side. However Lego people are so fat and deformed I'm not sure you could pull it off without making the AT-ST deformed. Either too tall or too wide :P.

8038 looks the best to my eyes, though all of them have strengths and weaknesses. Of course, if we take the entire overall sets into account, I think we can all agree 8038 is the way to go by far, simply because it has so much stuff, of which the AT-ST is just a portion. 7657 is still the only one that actually has an AT-ST driver, though.

(I'm kind of amazed at all the people here who didn't realize AT-STs were always in Star Wars - Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back, even in 1980. What are they teaching kids in schools these days, anyway? :p )
