The_Skirrid Posted July 3, 2013 Posted July 3, 2013 I agree, I suffer from a form of Macular Dystrophy (effects central vision / colour) and I have a lot of issues as well with those colours as well. I found really really white light [5500Kish] helps a lot, a good LED light for example, low energy bulbs/fluorescents don't help as their colour spectrum is so poor. Quote
technicmad Posted July 3, 2013 Author Posted July 3, 2013 Great review... I am building it at the moment, but I am stuck in Book 2... because it shows that you have to pull out the 2 "stanchions" in front and in the back... but if I pull out the one in front the others roll in and the other way round... someone got an advice where my mistake could be?! thanks a lot Which page are you talking about? Quote
Oldschooler Posted July 3, 2013 Posted July 3, 2013 must look when I am home, but it's one of the last in Book 2, where you put the second big part with the two stanchions similar to the one on the back on the chassis... and it's just the wrong sense... so if you pull the ones in the back out, the ones in front go back towards the chassis... so... somewhere must be a mistake or chainwheel turns in the wrong direction...?! I have no idea...and I would be grateful for every idea that could help me get back in the game :) Quote
TinkerBrick Posted July 3, 2013 Posted July 3, 2013 I started building mine an hour ago. I had ordered it on Monday (S@H) and it has been delivered today. Quote
N-4K0 Posted July 3, 2013 Posted July 3, 2013 Damnit. 42009 is now on the Norwegian lego.com site, but it's 238 Euro. Seems I'll be waiting for quite some time for an offer on it. Quote
gmshades Posted July 4, 2013 Posted July 4, 2013 For the 3 part boom, do you think it's possible to replace the string with chain? I know I did this with 8421 and it seemed to work smoother. Quote

750ACE Posted July 5, 2013 Posted July 5, 2013 Ouch, hopefully it will be a bit cheaper when it comes in stores like toys r us. Expect toys r us to be $10.00 USD higher than lego.com. That is the trend. Quote
Traktor Posted July 5, 2013 Posted July 5, 2013 (edited) Expect toys r us to be $10.00 USD higher than lego.com. That is the trend. In Norway it is the opposite, the official price from Lego.com for the Unimog was 1699 kr, but Toys r us sold it for 1599 kr. So I expect Toys r us to sell it for 1799 kr and not 1899 kr as Lego.no does. Lego.no is in general more expensive than other retailers and especially other internet shops. And the shipping cost is, if I do not remember wrong, 200 kr or about 35 dollars. I have a lot of lego, but have not bought a single set from Lego.no because of this. Edited July 5, 2013 by Traktor Quote
N-4K0 Posted July 5, 2013 Posted July 5, 2013 The Unimog was also 1699 NOK at lekmer.no, where I got it. I used them because the Unimog had a discount of 19 %, and was at 1379 NOK. I see the discount is still there. And I agree with Traktor, it's unlikely that I'll use lego.no, or lego.com/nb-no/ as it says in my browser, to buy the 42009. 1899 NOK is too much. The problem is that a possible discount somewhere will probably be far away, maybe not until next year, and I don't wanna wait that long! I got some spare money back on my taxes, so if I exclude those, I'm a bit under what I paid for the Unimog, so it's not that bad really. Quote
jantjeuh Posted July 5, 2013 Posted July 5, 2013 (edited) Do the mechanisms function well? I read something about the outriggers being slow? Is the boom actually capable of lifting anything? Edit: ah, I see you talk about this at the end of the review, nevermind :) Edited July 5, 2013 by jantjeuh Quote
S.I Posted July 5, 2013 Posted July 5, 2013 Decided not to wait, ordered it Monday and arrived yesterday. 200 euros - 10 due to the vippoints from buying it is expensive, but now I have a set to build now and can wait to get the other two during pre Christmas sales. Quote

Good old Lego builder Posted July 9, 2013 Posted July 9, 2013 I was wondering, had anybody who has build 42009 lifted something with it? How much can it handle? Quote
technicmad Posted July 9, 2013 Author Posted July 9, 2013 I was wondering, had anybody who has build 42009 lifted something with it? How much can it handle? 8070 = Fail 42008 = Fail 42005 = Fail Not very impressive :( Quote
TinkerBrick Posted July 9, 2013 Posted July 9, 2013 I haven't had a chance to test it yet, since i'm not done building it. So far the boom is still missing. Perhaps i'll find the time later this evening. However when i grabed the string and activated the winch, the rear end of the crane kind of lifted itself up. Quote
irispen Posted July 9, 2013 Posted July 9, 2013 If the boom can handle it but the gear keeps on sliding, can anyone fix it to lift heavier things Quote
CisFran Posted July 9, 2013 Posted July 9, 2013 you can replace the clutch gear with ordinary 24 tooth gear but you might destroy the gears or bend the boom Quote
Waler Posted July 9, 2013 Posted July 9, 2013 Here is the gallery for 42009: http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=530005 It contain building sequence new/interesting parts and photos of full model. I don't have much time right now to write a little bit more about crane but I decided to post photos. Quote
S.I Posted July 9, 2013 Posted July 9, 2013 Both my 32L axles were bent, I havn't finished building the crane yet, but would this be a noticeable friction source and should I ask for new ones? Quote
dhc6twinotter Posted July 9, 2013 Posted July 9, 2013 Ouch, hopefully it will be a bit cheaper when it comes in stores like toys r us. The crane will be 219.99 when it hits the LEGO stores August 1st. I expect the U.S. TRU stores to price it in the 239.99 to 249.99 range. TRU typically has a 10% hike on their stuff. Quote
Theo van Vroenhoven Posted July 10, 2013 Posted July 10, 2013 Book I of the BI can now be downloaded from the LEGO website: http://www.lego.com/en-us/technic/products/construction/42009 Quote
TinkerBrick Posted July 10, 2013 Posted July 10, 2013 I finished building the crane last night. Works great so far. It lifted two unimog wheels/tires easily. But there is room for some improvement. Quote
