Paul B Technic Posted June 28, 2013 Posted June 28, 2013 This is really quite sad what some people do to the hard work of others :( Have you ever experienced something like this yourself? http://www.cairns.co...local-news.html Huge Lego helicopter destroyed at Cairns Central "Lego certified professional Ryan "The Brickman'' McNaught is in Cairns to build a huge plastic rainforest at Cairns Central this week. But a giant helicopted (pictured) which was part of the display at the shopping centre was completely wiped out last night. Mr McNaught's wife Melinda McNaught posted a photo of the damage on twitter. She said: "Ryan McNaught, Aussie #LEGO Certified Professional at Cairns Central this week - vandalism tonight. "Devastation for Ryan and the McNaught family tonight as #LEGOElvis destroyed at public display #disrespect." Police say an elderly male tourist saw the incident unfold around 9.40pm last night. It is believed a group of juveniles approached the display, before pushing it over and causing it to smash, before fleeing. A Cairns police spokesperson said the witness contacted police after the incident and they would look at CCTV footage of the incident today to attempt to identify the youths. Mr McNaught was due to stay in Cairns until Saturday where he will attempt to build the world's largest LEGO Daintree Rainforest. Melbourne-based Mr McNaught had constructed a LEGO "Elvis the Helicopter'' out of 250,000 bricks on display for workshops to teach kids how to build colourful rainforest animals. There are about 13 LEGO certified professionals in the world and Mr McNaught is the only one in the southern hemisphere. While they are not employed by LEGO, people are selected into the LEGO Certified Professionals program based on their building efficiency, enthusiasm and professional approach and many turn their love for LEGO into a career. Cairns Central marketing manager Suzy Pickard said she encouraged the community to check out the construction of the rainforest as it took shape. When Mr McNaught visited Cairns at the same time last year, he amazed onlookers with a scale replica of the ship from 1970s television hit The Love Boat built out of 250,000 pieces. Keen Lego builders can register to be part of a workshop at Cairns Central's customer service or visitcairnscentral.com.au for more information." Quote
Dat Lego Posted June 28, 2013 Posted June 28, 2013 Sad stuff, hope nothing happened to the pieces like getting lost/stolen. I know it might be crazy but I really hope the ones responsible for this gets caught . Quote
tomdobs55 Posted June 28, 2013 Posted June 28, 2013 I remember when that was posted on here. What a shame for such a beautiful model. Quote
LEGO Guy Bri Posted June 28, 2013 Posted June 28, 2013 I remember when that was posted on here. What a shame for such a beautiful model. Yeah, that was a fantastic model. I couldn't believe how big it actually was! I feel my blood pressure rise when I see this kind of thing. Whether it's a LEGO creation or someone's art, it's very disturbing. I can't imagine what the builder felt when he found this Quote
Kristel Posted June 28, 2013 Posted June 28, 2013 This kind of thing makes my blood boil too. I hope they can identify them from the CCTV. Quote
fred67 Posted June 28, 2013 Posted June 28, 2013 People are $%@#. Too many people not being taught to respect others... it seems to get worse and worse as time goes on, as disrespectful jerks beget more disrespectful jerks. My sincerest admiration for Ryan, the hard work he put into it, for trying to make the community a better place. Vandals are the worst kind of #@# because they don't even get anything out of it... they do it just to be #@#! I wish I could curse, here. I don't very often, but this is one of the times I feel like it. Quote
Ham17 Posted June 28, 2013 Posted June 28, 2013 (edited) OMG I saw this at Brickvention 2013 and thought it was incredible..... I cant believe this . I SHAL CATCH THIS VANDAL!!!!! Edited June 28, 2013 by Ham17 Quote
ISDAvenger Posted June 28, 2013 Posted June 28, 2013 (edited) What the heck. Man, what a shame. I would have had a heart attack if someone did that to my ISD. Edited June 28, 2013 by ISDIronClaw Quote
Jargo Posted June 28, 2013 Posted June 28, 2013 Absolutely disgusting. I can't begin to imagine how Ryan must be feeling. I do have to wonder why there were no barriers around the model though. I've never seen a large Lego display piece that wasn't inside a semi-protected area. Hope the delinquents responsible for the destruction are brought to book Quote
Kez Posted June 28, 2013 Posted June 28, 2013 OMG, how the hec could people even do something like this, that man is a true professional and is very talented, its such a disgrace and that helicopter was really awesome, hopefully his rainforest is a success. Quote
MikroMan Posted June 28, 2013 Posted June 28, 2013 The nerve of some people... And such a beautiful model it was Quote
Legopast Posted June 28, 2013 Posted June 28, 2013 I would not have it in me to do something like this, It must take somebody with a real disrespect for others or no good in them at all, a shame society has drooped so low these days Quote
just2good Posted June 28, 2013 Posted June 28, 2013 Darn, that is such a cool MOC, too. I hate it when people disrespect any property- especially if it is LEGO. I mean seriously, what point were these vandals trying to make by destroying it? It just makes them look like jerks. I hope they get the proper punishment. Quote
Vindicare Posted June 28, 2013 Posted June 28, 2013 It's pretty sad when this stuff happens. Kids need to learn and respect other people's property. These kids certainly need some better parentng or hoobbies. Im sure they did it cause they thought it'd be cool/funny... I've had this sort of thing happen to me, just not with LEGO. Quote
Boxerlego Posted June 28, 2013 Posted June 28, 2013 That was $25,000 estimated worth of damage no matter how you look at it. You haft to be dumb as a fried potato to put your hands on that with malicious intent. The second you step foot in places like that the Eye in the sky is recording your every move from start to finish. These kids pushed over the wrong LEGO... seriously. Quote
naf Posted June 28, 2013 Posted June 28, 2013 Ridiculous. I blame the parents just as much as the children for not teaching them respect. I've had my home vandalized by neighborhood kids, who I luckily caught in the act. The parents weren't home and the kids were just roaming the neighborhood looking to cause trouble. Teach your kids to respect other people's property!!! Quote
Hrw-Amen Posted June 28, 2013 Posted June 28, 2013 Yes, it is truly disturbing that children would do that. What did they hope to gain from it? I am sure they must have known they were being recorded on CCTV. I bet if it even got to court they would get away with it as well as some feebal minded judge would say “Its only LEGO, it can be put back together, it is not really broken.” Which totally ignores all the hard work and hours that have been put into it. Quote
TheLegoDr Posted June 28, 2013 Posted June 28, 2013 It is very unfortunate that it happened. That is a lot of hard work wasted. I feel bad for the creator and bad for the people who did it (as in that someone would have that thought in their mind and want to act on it). They should know better. I hope justice is served cold. Quote
Grimmbeard Posted June 30, 2013 Posted June 30, 2013 Wow. I've never seen this happen before. I hate how some people think it's funny to do stuff like this. I've had to deal with people say "what would happen if I just smashed all your LEGO?", but at least the people I know have enough respect for it and only joke about it. I can't imagine how the builder feels having his own art actually destroyed. Hope everything turns out ok. Quote
Slobey Posted June 30, 2013 Posted June 30, 2013 Unfortunately under the Australian justice system if they are juveniles and get caught, they'll only get a slap on the wrist and told in a stern voice not to do it again.... Quote
CM4Sci Posted June 30, 2013 Posted June 30, 2013 Wow, that sucks. That helicopter is really cool! I just hope nothing happens to my LEGO Store... -Sci Quote

I just hope nothing happens to my LEGO Store... -Sci If a vandal destroys that display I hope the punishment for him/her is big. Not only is it a loss for LEGO themselves, people can get seriously hurt if the models crush the people below. Edited June 30, 2013 by Dat Lego Quote
