SheepEater Posted July 7, 2013 Posted July 7, 2013 (edited) My parents were not rich. And I had a GI-Joe phase. 565 Moon Landing 544 basic set . I still use the old 16x16 baseplate to this day - the green is now dark green. --------------- After this, I'm not sure if I should include the following 4 classic space sets. They were originally my brother's, and by the time he gave them to me, many of the parts were lost or damaged, and the instructions were long lost; so I did not experience them to the fullest. I did build tons of space MOCs out of them, though, so here they are anyway: 462 442 894 918 ------------- Now it's 1986 8660 8640 8700 1497 1496 8832 So it ends in 1988. I was 13 and my dark ages began, only to end in 2002 by my purchase of the 8457 Power Puller and 8431 Pneumatic Crane on lego.com. If you're a still a kid, or a teen who never entered a "dark age", then...stop at when you were 14 or something. Edited July 7, 2013 by SheepEater Quote
naf Posted July 7, 2013 Posted July 7, 2013 (edited) I have my collection listed under my signature. Anything recent (Kingdoms, Star Wars, ect) are post dark ages purchases. Eldorado Fortress is an exception, as I recently purchased that via ebay. It was a set I always wanted growing up but never got my hands on. I think 1994 was when my dark ages started, and I collected from roughly 1984 until then. I didn't realize how many sets I had until I catalogued them all recently. Lego was the only gift I asked for through the 80's, and that's pretty much all I got from my parents and relatives for birthdays and Christmas. My favorites are: 6931 FX Star Patroller -> My first Lego set of significant size, all I had until then were the small boxes, I guess you'd consider them impulse sets now. 6951 Robot Command Center -> I know everyone thinks this set is weird, but I loved it. It had so many great parts you could build anything space related with them. 6285 Black Seas Barracuda 6990 Monorail Transport System 7722 Steam Cargo Train Set Edited July 8, 2013 by naf Quote
Sid Sidious Posted July 7, 2013 Posted July 7, 2013 All I remember having were some of those basic buckets, and a couple McDonald's polys. Then 2001 happened and Bionicle came out, and that was basically all my collection until 2009ish. Quote
TheLegoDr Posted July 8, 2013 Posted July 8, 2013 I have my collection in my signature too. I'm not sure on the ratio of old pre-Dark Ages vs new post-Dark Ages, but I know I had a lot of LEGO when I was a kid. I had a TMNT, GI Joe and LEGO collections, but I enjoyed LEGO the most. I was also the only kid around that had any LEGO growing up. My DA were from 1996 or so until 2010 with the HP release. I was about age 13 when it happened. That seems to be a pretty typical age to get interested in other things and away from "toys." It is quite interesting since most of the color scale is different now than when I was a kid. Quote
Leo604 Posted July 8, 2013 Posted July 8, 2013 From when I was 4 to about 11, my collection mostly consisted of Star Wars, Bionicle, and City sets, with occasionally the few medieval/Kingdom/Castle sets that came out. My Dark Ages lasted until 2 years ago (I was 16 then), in where I started buying more Star Wars sets, and eventually the LOTR and Superheroes lines. Fortunately I've never gave away any of my Lego so I had a ton of stuff left when I got back into the hobby. Quote
Artanis I Posted July 8, 2013 Posted July 8, 2013 From the 80s & 90s: 19 space sets, 14 castle sets, @8-12 pirate sets (some I can't remember if I had or not), 2 aquazone sets, a whole heap of town sets (most of them presents, I wasn't overly interested in that stuff), 1 fabuland set, and some duplo and standard bricks. Most of those sets were small, and medium at best. Next set I bought wasn't until 2007 when I realised eBay & Bricklink had vintage sets available, despite having joined BL in 2004. My sister had given me an adventurers set sometime before that though. First new (off the shelf) set I bought after that was Space Police 3 in 2009. (Yes, I bought the whole line...) I buy more Lego each year than I had in total 15 years ago, when I'd started spending all my spare money on music stuff. Quote
joerminer Posted July 8, 2013 Posted July 8, 2013 I am only just now coming out of my "Dark Ages." I had quite a few sets built up over my kid years that I gave away as a Christmas gift to my cousin's kids when I was a teenager. I currently have only 3 sets to my name, but I am slowly trying to build up again. As to what I had when I was a kid (with the help of Brick Link for memory jogging, and I am certain I am still forgetting some sets)- Aquanauts-- 1728 Crystal Crawler 1822 Sea Claw 7 6175 Crystal Explorer Sub Castle/Medieval Themed-- 1877 Crusader's Cart 6054 Forrestman's Hideout 6075 Wolfpack Tower Pirates Themed-- 6245 Harbor Sentry 6257 Castaway's Raft 6267 Lagoon Lockup 1481 Desert Island Space Themed-- Blacktron-- 1462 Galactic Scout 1479 2-Pilot Craft 1887 Scout Patrol Ship 6812 Grid Trekkor 6832 Super Nova II 6851 Tri-Wheeled Tyrax Space Police-- 1969 Mini Robot 6813 Galactic Chief 6852 Sonar Security Ice Planet 2002-- 6814 Ice Tunnelator 6834 Celestial Sled 6879 Blizzard Baron M:Tron-- 6877 Vector Detector I know I also had some city sets, and I believe a few other space and caste themed sets, in addition to some general blocks. I am having difficulty remembering what all of these other sets are though. I do remember that I had approximately 2 large, flat rubbermaid tubs full of pieces. I am hoping I can one day rebuild my old collection in addition to new sets, but that is going to take quite some time. Quote
Herky Posted August 19, 2013 Posted August 19, 2013 I think I am a bit older than most here then...LOL. I have sets from the 70's and early 80's which were all basic sets plus a lot of the space ones from back then. I also have a 1960's car and a mashed up Lego Esso gas station set which is not complete, but oddly enough for those who want to go back and pick up old sets, they aren't really that pricey on ebay. I recently went back and found a couple that I had always wanted back then and picked them up. Is there a Topic for old sets? A separate "vintage" section maybe divided by the decades (60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, 00s) on the site? I looked it up but could not find one, but am not sure I searched right. Quote

Well, just call "Legohistorian" i bit louder and he will apear :) That crazy guy started a bunch of amazing topics regarding old and older Lego sets. Just do a quick forum search on topics started from him. Dino Quote
FuzzyBallz Posted August 19, 2013 Posted August 19, 2013 I had a couple of Police and Pirate mini sets when I was young. Then I got a bunch of Knights & Castle and Pirate & Imperial sets when I was older. Loss them all during the move. I miss the old school Castle on the hill plate thing and pirate ships. Quote
Herky Posted August 20, 2013 Posted August 20, 2013 thanks Dino, I actually sent him a message about the Lego Esso cause I am not sure what it is, if it is just something someone put together or what, so figured he might know. I need to do an inventory and take pics really, finally figured out how to post pics here...here is that set...kind of odd, has a bunch of extra signage with it so you can change it out. I think it is a pieced together set from someone, but was only $20 for this at a local store so picked it up. Quote

Didn't get back into Lego till the collectable minifigs came out in 2010 but I do have some sets from the early noughties that I must have bought at the time so it shows I was dipping in even in the Dark times. Carrera124 Posted August 21, 2013 Posted August 21, 2013 Town... I just realized that I had (and still have) 90% of the line-up that has been released between 1980 and 1984: 6361 6362 6363 6364 6366 6367 6368 6371 6372 6373 6382 6384 6391 6480 6501 6502 6503 2x 6521 6523 6530 6601 6605 3x 6606 3x 6607 6608 6609 6610 6611 6612 6613 6621 6622 6623 6624 6627 6628 3x 6629 6630 6634 2x 6641 6647 6650 2x 6651 6652 6653 6654 6655 6657 6659 6676 6677 6678 6680 2x 6681 6682 6684 6685 6686 6687 6692 6693 6694 6697 6698 Technic: 854 872 1972 2x 8020 8024 8030 8040 8044 8064 8074 8620 8660 8700 8810 8825 8830 8832 8835 8838 8840 8841 8842 8843 8845 8850 8851 8854 8856 (last set I bought before other things became more interesting...) 8865 Still own everything today. Some parts show heavy playwear, but I always kept an eye on the instructions, so all survived in good condition. Around 1988, I started to keep the boxes of the Technic sets, and I stopped to mix the new-bought sets with all my older parts. So, these sets still have all their original parts. Quote
Galaxy Explorer Posted August 22, 2013 Posted August 22, 2013 When I was a kid, I started collecting Town sets in 1980. Every week I would take my allowance money ($5) and ride my bike over to Target and pick up a small set. Later that summer I saved up and got Engine Co. No. 9, my first "large" set, which also had a much more inclusive catalog instead of the little folded ones I was used to seeing. That year for my birthday I got Main Street, which to this day remains my favorite set ever. The next year I expanded into Space, and got a few small to medium sets. I remember saving up to get the Starfleet Voyager- what a great set that was! I'd say between 1980 and 1986 I collected around 75 sets from Town, Castle, and Space. I never went through a Dark Age, so my collection kept growing as I got older, especially when I got my first job and started to drive. I still have all my sets from my childhood, and frequently build them. Quote
LEGO Guy Bri Posted August 22, 2013 Posted August 22, 2013 I wish I would have taken more photos from my first layout as it was growing. I only have a few from the first couple years I was collecting and the first year I had my 'LEGO Room'. I believe this is around 1998. I, too, still have all my original sets and instructions, fortunately with little to know play wear or discoloration Quote
AmperZand Posted August 24, 2013 Posted August 24, 2013 I had the pre-minifig Texas Ranger set 372 and then went on to almost all of the early Space sets. I also had at least one Technic set: the blue go-kart 854/948. My mother gave them to charity in my DA, so I guess they went to a good home. But I wish I had kept them especially the early Space sets. Quote
Ragnar_Deerslayer Posted August 31, 2013 Posted August 31, 2013 My sets growing up: Basic Sets: 112 Universal Building Set (1977) 720 Basic Building set (1985) Town: 6522 Highway Patrol (1987) 6698 RV with Speedboat (1986) Space: 6780 XT Starship (Light & Sound) (1986) 6809 XT-5 and Droid (1987) 6820 Starfire I (1986) 6825 Cosmic Comet (1985) 6827 Strata Scooter (1987) 6846 Tri-Star Voyager (1984) 6847 Space Dozer (1985) 6848 Inter-Planetary Shuttle (1985) 6882 Walking Astro Grappler (1985) 6892 Modular Space Transport (1986) Technic: 8040 Universal Set (1984) 8055 Universal Motor Set (1986) I was really a Classic Space fan (mainly for the WHOOSH factor of the spaceships I'd create). After about 1986 or 87, I played with my LEGOs intermittently, but I didn't request them for Christmas and birthday. Quote
boba_jagoda Posted September 2, 2013 Posted September 2, 2013 (edited) I usually got a little set when my parents were going to Hungary from Croatia to buy (smugle ) some cheap food in the 80ties. It was a big surprise because there was no way of knowing which sets will they have in the store. This is the lot (missing a little futuron 6830 and fabuland police motorcycle): I got the "big" sets like the plane, forestmen or stable for special occasions. I remember being very embarrassed upon getting the forestmen because I felt "too old" to play (I guess I was around 12). Vindicare Posted September 5, 2013 Posted September 5, 2013 I had just about everything you can think of from the late 80's through most of the 90's. All the different Space factions, Castle, Town, Western, Adventurers, etc. Quote
racedees Posted May 1, 2015 Posted May 1, 2015 (edited) I still (after all those years) own the following sets. 607 6366 6641 6650 6654 6801 6820 6826 6872 8020 8720 8810 8815 8820 8850 8862 Oh and sadly teeth were used to diassemble those days. mpfirnhaber Posted May 1, 2015 Posted May 1, 2015 I have sold nearly everything I bought in the last 15 years, but I have all my childhood sets, which consist of lots of Futuron, Blacktron, Space Police, Pirates, Forestmen, and Wolfpack. Quote
AFOLguy1970 Posted May 1, 2015 Posted May 1, 2015 Almost painful to post this, but I had in the 1980's an Alpha 1 Rocket Base, a Galaxy Explorer, an All Terrain Vehicle, and the Yellow Castle, all of which Mom sold at a garage sale. Quote
dr_spock Posted May 1, 2015 Posted May 1, 2015 I don't remember exactly what sets. I recall some blue train tracks and a red tow truck. Then my LEGO disappeared during a move in grade 2. Didn't have LEGO again until university. Quote
Deathleech Posted May 1, 2015 Posted May 1, 2015 (edited) I know when I was really young I had a lot of smaller, older sets. However, seeing as I never kept them assembled and since I was so young it's hard for me to remember exactly which they were. I just have the minifigures to remind me. When I got a little older I started to assemble them and keep them assembled. It's much easier for me to remember which of those sets I had. Heck, I still have some assembled in storage. They were: Castle 6020-1 - Magic Shop 6038-1 - Wolfpack Renegades 6007-1 - Bat Lord 6027-1 - Bat Lord's Catapult 6079-1 - Dark Forest Fortress 6056-1 - Dragon Wagon 6044-1 - King's Carriage 6090-1 - Royal Knight's Castle Western 6709-1 - Tribal Chief 6712-1 - Sheriff's Showdown 6706-1 - Frontier Patrol 6718-1 - Raindance Ridge 6748 - 1 - Boulder Cliff Canyon (or 6746-1- Chief's Tepee, can't remember which) 6755-1 - Sheriff's Lock-Up 6761-1 - Bandit's Secret Hide-Out 6765-1 - Gold City Junction 6766-1 - Rapid River Village Pirates 6204 - 1 Buccaneers 6244-1 Armada Sentry The entire Islanders subtheme (I remember being especially proud of this because I had them all and they were displayed on a shelf in my room) City (Town) 6517-1 - Water Jet 6546-1 - Slick Racer 6326-1 - Town Folk 6514-1 - Trail Ranger 6515-1 - Stunt Copter 6513-1 - Glade Runner 6350-1 - Pizza To Go (I specifically remember this one as I loved the pizza and little delivery cart) 6664-1- Chopper Cops 6614-1 - Launch Evac 1 6340-1 - Hook Ladder 6552-1 - Rocky River Retreat6 6561-1 - Hot Rod Club 6562-1 - Gas Stop Shop (I remember this set specifically because the tow truck rolled off the counter on to the floor and I didn't know this until the next day when the dog had chewed the tires... ) 4558-1 - Metroliner (I got this for Christmas and was ecstatic that year! I remeber watching it go around in circles for hours after I had built it, loading and unloading passengers with each pass. Unfortunately it broke apart when we moved and parts to it were lost...) I know I had a lot more pirate sets as I had huge gallon zip lock baggies full of pirates and a ship haul. I just never had them assembled. I also had several Backtron 2 Space sets but can't remember which ones as none of them were ever kept assembled either. Edited May 1, 2015 by Deathleech Quote
