September 12, 201410 yr Just a quick question. What's the dimensions of the base plate on the modulars (say for example the pet shop) I'm looking at shelves to display and don't want them to overhang but can only fiend width and height measurements. Thanks

September 12, 201410 yr Great thanks for the info Lego Shop@Home description (for 10243) says that baseplate is 25cm (10") x 25cm(10"). If it is actually 10" then it is more like 25.4cm - so keep in mind that is not exactly 25 :)
September 12, 201410 yr I dont see how an apartment building and detective agency would work together because I always picture the agancy being on a second or third floor. Maybe it migjt be two businesses in one modular building.
September 12, 201410 yr Perhaps this next modular is an office building which contains a detective agency among other offices ? Maybe a three level structure with a stair case in the middle of the building ?
September 12, 201410 yr The width of a stud is 0.8cm. Therefore 32 studs (the size of a baseplate) is 25.6cm
September 12, 201410 yr With regards to the detective agency speculation, what many of you forget is that the modular buildings work independently from one-another. Like other product lines, they are part of a system but not dependent for their completeness. The feature of being able to 'connect' these buildings is precisely that - a feature entirely for marketing purposes. There is therefore no reason to assume that the series needs a police station, a library, a dentist or any other specific service, as the models have original scenarios. If you were going to pinpoint the objective or purpose of this sub-theme, then you are looking at idyllic - even timeless - situations that a more mature audience can associate with, regardless of gender or background. A detective agency above a laundromat/diner neither sounds interesting to build, nor does it contain the 'cutesy' appeal of wonderful architecture that has been scaled down so accurately. Likely, the next modular building will either be a different take on a service that has already been represented, or a scenario that we have yet to consider. The only way a detective agency would work is if it was based on something as significant as Sherlock Holmes, where the architecture is unique.

Some of the conjecture was a setup like the Pet Shop modular, so apartments could be on one side and the businesses on the other. ...and Sherlock Holmes is long before the rest of the modulars' time period. September 12, 201410 yr A detective agency above a laundromat/diner neither sounds interesting to build, nor does it contain the 'cutesy' appeal of wonderful architecture that has been scaled down so accurately. Again - "Pet Shop" also does not sound too cool, does it? ;)
September 12, 201410 yr The width of a stud is 0.8cm. Therefore 32 studs (the size of a baseplate) is 25.6cm Actually I base my signage/sticker designs on a stud equaling 7.5mm. Now are we to expect every two releases Lego releases a side-by-side modulars like the petshop and town house ?

I personally feel that a detective agency above a laundromat/diner would be very interesting to build. Also, I see no reason why it couldn't be cleverly built - heck, I've got several ideas of my own as to how it might look! "Makes a mental note to at least build a .lfx of an agency if it doesn't turn out to be the next one."
September 13, 201410 yr ...and frankly, how can anyone complain about the architectural appeal of something that's purely hypothetical at this point? Edited September 13, 201410 yr by rollermonkey
September 13, 201410 yr ...and frankly, how can anyone complain about the architectural appeal of something that's purely hypothetical at this point? This. I think the rumored Detective Agency will have enough individual style that we will enjoy it. And if you don't like the actual purpose of the building, you can modify it. I think Eurotrash changed his Pet Shop into a bar by changing the sign outside and a few props inside.
September 13, 201410 yr i see all of you are discussing about the Detective Agency.....is it the confirmed one?
September 13, 201410 yr ...and frankly, how can anyone complain about the architectural appeal of something that's purely hypothetical at this point? Exactly. It's funny to see how some people are able to work themselves up to disliking something that so far hasn't even been seen or confirmed at all. Something like a detective agency would be in line with previous modulars such as Pet Shop or Green Grocer in that the business it represents has little influence on the overall architectural style of the building(s). Saying 'it doesn't sound interesting to build' based on the freaking name of the thing is pretty farfetched. How much fun the build will be will be determined by the design of the building, not the business.
September 13, 201410 yr All the other modulars seem to be rather upmarket, so the typical detective agency above a Chinese laundry or restaurant as aforementioned would be an interesting change, if true, and if it is of the Dick Tracy/40s Film Noir/Gumshoe kind of detective. Of course, it does not necessarily have to be a downmarket detective agency in a commercial building, as there are examples of such agencies set up in residential buildings such as the previously mentioned Holmes' 22B Baker Street, but there is also Agatha Christie's Hercule Poirot who uses his place of residence, a flat in the Whitehaven Mansions, a Streamline Moderne Art Deco apartment building in London ( Florin Court is used for the television series), as his office and place of work, complete with secretary Miss Lemon.
September 13, 201410 yr I'm so excited (and I just can't hide it!). When do the likely rumours come out? Is it usually around about October? I would love a retail/residential bookshop.

The only way a detective agency would work is if it was based on something as significant as Sherlock Holmes, where the architecture is unique. That is a very good point, one that I had not thought of before. We all buy the modulars to connect with each other and make a city block, but TLG does not necessarily sell them that way. It makes sense that each building would have to be able to stand on its own. I actually mentioned Hercule Poirot as a possibility for the detective office a little while ago on this thread. I think something like that might be cool to see, although possibly it wouldn't fit with the previous modulars. But Poirot's time period (1930's) fits perfectly with the modular buildings, so that would work better chronologically than Sherlock Holmes (Victorian age).

Haha, I too was thinking about Poirot's apartment block as a basis for a set. I didn't post anything because I thought the building was too large, but maybe a scaled down version, not as many floors. I love the Florin Court/Whitehaven Mansions building. ;-) I thought a cinema in Art Deco/Moderne style would be nice too.
