You know I hope one day the design team actually tells as how and why they decide on what buildings they create for us AFOL's to go nuts over ?

My gut says that the future might be similar to the DO and PR......max'ed out interior and exterior which I don't mind at all.

Posted

I can't help but feel they want to bring the modulars back into the child's realm, by going in the direction they have been going, and screw the AFOL's that buy them.

Agree 100%. The only use I have for the last two modulars is using them as a starting point. In doing that, I'm left with hundreds of parts that I'll never have any use for. Stuff like the parts from the artists studio in the PR and the cookies in the DO (far from an all inclusive list of useless parts).

I feel the earlier modulars lacked character......no interiors or very little, it was like it's just there....a building, fair enough nice outside.....big deal, no story, no soul, it's just a building and nothing else.

Maybe we can all agree to disagree, so I'm in the PR/DO camp......they can keep going in this direction because it might just bring me back into the modular fold.

Perhaps it works for both children and adults now. Children can enjoy the set as is. Working adults can buy multiple copies of the same set to modular up.

Also perhaps LEGO is just responding to the more vocal portion of the market. I see many posts from people asking for schools, newspaper offices, police stations, libraries, banks, etc and these are functions mostly defined by what is happening inside the building... unless you want every modular to have a large cafe-corner-esk sign outside stating it's function. Some people may think the Town Hall is bland, but it can easily be re-purposed for much of the before-mentioned requests.

I don't really see that many posts from people saying they want this or that specific type of architecture. If they build an example to show what they want, then they don't really need LEGO to design the same for them. And LEGO may face charges of 'coping'. If they are just waiting to see what cool architecture and building techniques LEGO comes out with, then their silent desire may not be reaching LEGO.

I prefer more sets like Coffee and bike shop. It has just the size and the detail that fits with my skills. And this Christmas, I was able to buy some for aprox €50 each. A good bunch of pieces (better than the ones that come with brick and more big buckets) at a price that let my budget to buy more than one.

The new Toy & Grocery Shop of this year disappoints me a lot (too small for placing on a decent level city project). I like this alternative building idea:

But then I find the set, a little expensive.

All that TLG gained last year using the coffee and bike shop as a first step to approach big sets like DO to KFOLs, is going to be lost if TLG don't release a similar set next autumn.

I'm a 3 wall builder, due to it, modular sets disturb me a little. But, I see hinges as a good solution that let me choose between two narrow 3 walls buildings, or one wider 4 wall building.

Other suggestion, I made in this post some pages before, was that TLG create some sets of 16x8 shops and then create some "apartments" extension sets for placing up the shops (maybe the future TBBT set could fit on this philosophy). Playmobil use to sell extension sets of their buildings via their online shop, if TLG thinks that an extension set is not suitable for third party toy shops, TLG can sell them only in it own shops or on the online shop.

In the past there have been many discussions that the part count drives up the prices and so there is a compromise between the interior and the exterior to come to what is a marketable price. I am currently adapting a second Pet Shop, and I was very surprised by some of the inefficiencies of the bricks used. As an example, they would lay (2) 1x4 Bricks Short Side to Short Side verses using (1) 1x8. I’m not saying that I want them to use those awful completely pre built walls like in some of the City and Friends’ sets, but I hope they can be more efficient and then in turn give us a better balance of the interior and exteriors as both are important to me.

I would really like to have a set in the same style as the Pet shop, as in having two buildings.

As for theme i would actually like to see a videogame arcade of sorts, it would be fun to see what creative ideas they would use to make arcade machines.

I'm back from my own DO build and I gotta say my opinion of it has somewhat improved after owning it up close in person.

The build was pleasantly varied and the presentation of the final structure will pass for all my purposes.

The "play feature" will continue to annoy me as I know I will never have a use for it and the appalling difference in size from the Gen1 modulars limit its placement in my layout.

Now where are we on generating more hype for the bank modular again? Here's to hoping they give the bank more of a structural presence than a fictional one.

Now we shouldn't compare the creator shop series with creator expert modulars......the shop series can be considered an intro to modular buildings for KFOL's.....when they are older perhaps those KFOL's will go into the creator expert range of buildings ?

My child and I have had many hours of fun with the more furnished modulars. I build them and she uses them as rather fragile dollhouses.

Sorry for my English.

I wrote my previous message trying to follow this thread,

I would be fine if TLG released two 16-wide modulars (one in January and on in like July) instead of one 32-wide. Just to throw in some variety. Or a 32 in January and a 16 in July.

but I miss to create the quote.

My intention was to say that good creator sets like coffee and bike shop could be in the line of 16 wide modular sets (or could be a first step to approach modulars to KFOLs). And, it was a pity the step backwards TLG has done with this year's toy shop and grocery.

16 wide modulars could be fine, even with the option of making it with hinges (more playable than 4 wall buildings).

And the other thing that could be great was the option of releasing extension sets for the modular buildings (like Playmobil does) or going far and create ground floor shops as regular sets and then extension sets of apartments to build over the shops (an option that is better for our wallets than buying several modulars for extend the building high or wide).

Talking about extending the DO buying 2 sets. Nothing to say about adding floors, but I want to see how are going to manage it the ones who want to make the DO wider. Because the dark brown part with the fire exit, it's only a 2 wall building due to the indoor floor plan. And I don't know if a double wide alley looks passable.

I would like to see some sort of Victorian houses in the Painted Ladies style. This could be a set of 2 16 wide homes, like the PS. This architecture would provide the details they seem to be going with lately and yet hopefully would be the right hight for everyone.

The Museum that is currently in Ideas review is also top on my list, though I would not be surprised (disappointed though) if it does not get approved.

I think a cool building would be a newspaper printer. One floor could be a big printing press/conveyor belt just popping out copies of the LEGO News.

A *very* interesting idea, I like it. It could be expanded to cover other type of assembly line manufacturing.

I have loved seeing photos of everyone's layouts. For me, I like to keep my layout real, by putting houses next to each other and businesses together. Does anyone else think about details like that? I see a lot of layouts with the DO next to the townhouse next to the FB...that doesn't seem right to me...Maybe I am being too realistic/logical...LOL

I've built a couple of Victorian style houses. Each 16 wide. There are instructions on eBay for Victorian houses. Mine used parts from the Lego Haunted House. However, that set isn't a necessity for building a nice Victorian. The instructions are relatively inexpensive and the parts are easy to get or easy to substitute.

How do you guys do your sidewalks in your layouts? I'm looking to start an actual layout with road plates. Do you guys expand the dark bley onto the road plate? Or use light bley for the road plates and dark bley for the modulars? Or use all light bley?

I (we, my kids too) think about that. Our layout shows the more "shabby" side of town to the left and the more "sophisticated" part to the right. Both sides have residential and shop buildings though...

Maybe your are right 'GCO'.....all but the PS where you split it into the two halves appears to have a fancy and not-so-fancy side of town feel about them.

It's like one year fancy, the next not so, then back to fancy.....or I'm I reading too much into it ?

I do expand the sidewalks to the edge of the roads on the roadplates. I use dark bley 2x2 tiles and have street lights next to the one curb drain on each side of the road.
