Yes, I had read that on Wikipedia (that you linked, thank you), that the earlier sets had much less on details. I even remember reading that Cafe Corner didn't have anything inside as "you couldn't see it on the box".

What you would you (or anyone who has bought these sets) recommend which set to start with that is built well/has good detail?

All of this has been discussed in the main modular thread over and over, but if you're starting out now, probably get the Pet Shop first. It's the oldest one available and is pretty unique in that it's two completely separate building that can be detached. It will likely retire in 2016, along with maybe the Palace Cinema.

In terms of build and detail, the two most recent ones (Parisian Restaurant and Detective's Office) are amazing.

Which one is the "main modular thread?" I will go take a look.

The only threads I've seen dealing specifically to the sets is the "Brick Bank" and "Pet Shop" threads, but those threads dealt specifically to those sets, only.

Thanks.

Edit: Are you referring to the thread "Bricklinking Modular Buildings"?

Thank you for everyone who has responded.

I had hoped to collect the earlier sets, as well. But looking at the prices of those online, they are way too much.

For the older Modulars (Green Grocer, Cafe Corner and Market Street), you can do what most of us did, building them by buying pieces from BrickLink and Lego's Pick-A-Brick and Bricks and Pieces. There's a thread with all the information you'll need - http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=90358

Yeah, I had thought about doing that (doing it piece by piece), but not there yet. I think I may just bypass the first three sets, but will keep piece-mealing the earliest sets in mind.

I didn't see a general LEGO Creator thread (like I see for Friends or City), so going to add this here. But I ended up purchasing Pet Shop and Palace Cinema this morning. The guy at the LEGO Store seemed pretty knowledgeable of the sets and he thinks I am pretty safe, retirement-wise, for the other two still out there (Parisian Restaurant and Detective's Office) for awhile.

I did also ask him about New Years Day (when the GBHQ and Brick Bank are released) and he indicated that there will definitely be a line. He added that last year it was really only the Detective's Office being released and it was crazy busy. I am debating if I want to go on New Years Day. He did indicate that neither of these would most likely be going anywhere for awhile.

I didn't see a general question thread for this sub-forum, so started a new thread. Moderators, please feel free to condense with another thread if it was supposed to go there, instead.

I merged this with the existing Modular Buildings "general discussion" thread.

Ok, thanks. Didn't know this was the general discussion thread that covered the Creator buildings.

Modular Buildings is the term used by TLG and the AFOL community for CREATOR Expert buildings. The regular CREATOR line has buildings too and there are some structures in the CREATOR Expert line, like the Sydney Opera House or the Tower Bridge, that are discussed over in the Special Themes forum because they are not minifig-scale.

Ok, will keep that in mind in the future.

Thanks.

Heh, Brick Bank still hasn't come out and we're already speculating about 2017's modular

A library, museum, hospital or police office have been proposed numerous times already. If I had to throw an idea, I'd say the next modular could be a dentist's office implemented in an apartment building (first floor would be the office while the top floors would be residential).

Everybody is speculating about next year Modular Building with hundred of ideas, and Lego is going to re-release the Café Corner for the 10th anniversary of the modulars (created in 2007)

I honestly think that'd be a great idea, especially if they revamped it like they did with the Winter Village Toy Shop and added things like an interior and glass for the windows. That'd practically be enough to make it feel like a brand-new building! And people would no longer have to feel pressured to pay outrageous prices on the aftermarket for the original.

Oh, here we go again...

This discussion is going to split members here right down the middle (or thereabouts).

Those who already own CC (or not interested) will be terribly annoyed for not getting a new modular, and the rest will be ecstatic.

But seriously, I wouldn't buy a re-release of CC. I bricklinked the original one with a few minor adjustments, due to parts availability, and that's enough for us,

Like a lot of others, I would love to see a double building in 2017, like PS.

Doctor's, dentist's, lawyer's, snack bar, hamburger place, hardware store (all Lego have to do is open lightning tiger's profile), and so on, maybe with the obligatory apartment above them.

Fully residential? Fine by me.

Agreed. The Green Grocer and Corner Cafe are beautiful looking buildings but the modulars have come a long way since then with upgraded building techniques with new parts available and interior details, so I don't really know what that would mean for a re-release. Upgrade some parts and parts usage here and there, and/or add an interior, which would surely mean a good price increase...

I do not own a CC but would not be bothered if they did or did not release it again. If they did, it will probably be like the Winter Village Toy Shop with some updates. That means, you can expect an interior, a storyline, and a significant price increase.

My guess is that we will get something new. Keep in mind that Cafe Corner is of course a corner building, and we just got one in the form of the bank. I highly doubt we would get two corners in a row.

I mean, I own the original and wouldn't mind a rerelease. I don't know whether or not I'd personally get it (it'd probably depend on just how much has changed), but even if I didn't, a year without a new modular wouldn't kill me, and it'd be nice to know that people who hadn't gotten a chance to get the original could finally fill that gap in their collection. I'm obviously not saying there shouldn't be any new modulars ever (that'd be stupid), but I honestly can't think of a much better way to celebrate the theme's 10-year anniversary before going back to original modulars in 2018.

I agree completely. I own CC, I bricklinked it when it wasn't so expensive yet. However, I wouldn't mind a re-release of an updated CC. It would be a nice way to celebrate the anniversary, and a good chance for many to buy the set. I don't think it would affect the resellers so much, as they seem to sell MISB for huge profits. I might buy the re-release, depending on the improvements and price, but could easily live on without getting a new building (I might use the extra money left to get a second copy of the Brick Bank though). :classic:

Personally I think lego shouldn't re-release cafe corner a lot of people would be very unhappy as they have these older sets as an investment and re-releasing old sets will only lower the price of the older ones

I instead would prefer mini modulars 2

Posted

Mini modulars won't take the place of a full-sized building, at any rate. While a rerealeased Cafe Corner would be good, especially after this year's Toy Shop. I think it would be smaller to fit in with the current modulars' standards of fully detailed exterior and interior.

I just started collecting Lego about 2 months ago after seeing the Architecture line and buying a few of that series. While the Architecture series were pretty neat to display, the builds were pretty boring, and I wasn't satisfied with the piece count versus price, so I switched to the modular lineup. So far I've picked up the pet shop, palace theater, and parisian restaraunt. I'm waiting for another double points to pickup DO, Brick Bank, the Ghostbusters stationhouse, and a ferris wheel. While I would purchase CC if Lego re-released it, I would rather they re-release the Town Hall or Fire Brigade. IMHO, those 2 sets are more important to a town layout than the CC. Eventually, I will Bricklink all the sets I missed, but after building the Brick Bounty pirate set, I now have to have all the retired ships like the Black Pearl, Queen Anne's Revenge, etc.

Who needs a retirement fund right?
