AFOLguy1970 Posted November 13, 2014 Posted November 13, 2014 There could potentially be a bar, and the agency, and a barbershop. I get the feeling like this one is going to look very different from the others. A lot of bricks would have to go to providing detail for the interiors in the fashion of the PR (sorry Off-the-Wall, but signs seem to be pointing to this). If there has to be an alley in the middle, it is definitely going to make the two buildings narrow at the front (think Amsterdam). That would seem to imply that you would have to extend the buildings further to the back than normal to allow for some interior space. Could it also be possible that both buildings do not even have the same number of floors? If there is something above the Barber Shop, then you are going to need even more bricks to create an exterior and an interior, unless you go the way of the Pet Shop and make it vacant. It will be interesting to see what the pricing is on this. Quote
Mestari Posted November 13, 2014 Posted November 13, 2014 I guess the pricing will remain the same, number of bricks as well, detailing at the PR level. That would lead to the building itself being smaller than in the beginning of the modular line. The introduction of an alley probably helps them to keep the detailing at high level and sill have relatively high building. Just like the terrace area in PR. I don't think the building/buildings will extend more backwards - those will likely stay at the same point as all other modulars allowing Lego to keep the pieces limit where it is now. Quote
LegoSjaak Posted November 13, 2014 Posted November 13, 2014 ...i'm getting so curious now... and i now in advance that i will buy two.. even if there is a dolphin show above the barbershop...!! User Diggydoes on Brickset has provided more info about #10246 Detective Agency: It's basically two buildings, the Agency and a Barbershop. The main colours for the Agency are light yellow (looks like it at least) and dark orange (masonry bricks!!!),the colours for the Barbershop are dark blue and medium blue! Apparently the (32x32) baseplate is Brown, although he's not sure if it's reddish brown or dark brown. Not sure how a pool table fits in with the above, but I'm sure we'll find out soon enough. some kind of pool table....a pingpong table fitted in the FB....so maybe a pooltable would look something like this...? Quote
TheLegoDr Posted November 13, 2014 Posted November 13, 2014 I said before the PR came around, I wanted to see a modular in a light yellow. But specifically I said I wanted the new cool yellow from friends. I wonder which shade of yellow this will be. Interesting. And a brown baseplate. Goes with the other new colors they have been giving us. Quote
Herky Posted November 13, 2014 Posted November 13, 2014 Does anyone know how reliable this Diggydoes is? The more info we get, the more I scratch my head, bar now? I can't imagine TLG doing a full on bar...so we have a detective agency/barber shop/bar combo with an alley now. Not saying it couldn't happen, but it just sounds odd at this point. Quote

Sven F Posted November 13, 2014 Posted November 13, 2014 (edited) The bar rumor has been around for a while, it's the barber shop that's new. We've gone in detail about the probability of a bar, and my conclusion with all things drinking related is that only Americans seem to have a cultural biased view on bars as inappropriate for kids. Now i'm really interested in your bars, wonder whatever goes on in there that's so frowned upon Edited November 13, 2014 by Sven F Quote
Off the wall Posted November 13, 2014 Posted November 13, 2014 I'll believe it when I see it. But, the speculation is fun...... eurotrash Posted November 13, 2014 Posted November 13, 2014 Now i'm really interested in your bars, wonder whatever goes on in there that's so frowned upon As an ex-pat Brit living in rural Missouri and having spent time deejaying in Country bars I have a thousand stories to tell. But few of them are printable. Quote
Herky Posted November 13, 2014 Posted November 13, 2014 I did not discredit him or her...I just asked if anyone knows if this is reliable information, interesting you went negative right away there. Personally I will pick it up either way, but the more info that comes out, the more I am confused at what a crazy building this will be...when's the last time you went to get a haircut, had a case for a detective and stopped in for a pint all in one building? Just seems odd to me is all I said. American bars...well in the last what, 20 years I would say, there is a movement away from the corner bar to the "experience" of a bar and grille, so now we have neighborhood food joints that have bars in them such as 54th St Bar and Grille, TGIF's, Outback, Texas Roadhouse, Longhorn, even Applebees or Outback grew out of the trend really. Usually decent food fair and beer but they can do mixed drinks too. You will see kids in these places quite often. A true just bar, hard to find anymore, one that serves alcohol only that is. Drinking age was 18 in many states for a long time until maybe the late 70's early 80's but you wouldn't take kids in there, lots of smoke, drinking and carousing. Now I have never been in a biker bar but that is kind of a different animal, Euro might have more insight there. See the US movie Road House for an extremely Hollywood view, but there are places like that. In short, the American bar is a far cry from an English pub or European bar, do not know much about Australia drinking establishments other than movies (we know how accurate that can be) but I would say it's more due to the drinking age than anything as to why kids don't appear in bars. No need to take a kid into a place where people are in various stages of drunkenness. That and maybe a bit of a holdover attitude from the temperance movement...it's funny, most folks I know drink a lot, (I don't) but they do not frequent bars. Folks in the US are interesting to say the least, lots of contradictions all over the place. Quote
Heppeng Posted November 13, 2014 Posted November 13, 2014 I wonder if someone misheard and just heard the bar of bar-ber shop? I suspect there may be no bar! Quote
Blakstone Posted November 13, 2014 Posted November 13, 2014 I doubt it has a bar. It might just be a pool hall but we generally expect a pool table in a bar. I don't think I have seen a pool hall in about 30 years. Quote
Gongoro73 Posted November 13, 2014 Posted November 13, 2014 There's an old statistic that says in Spain are more bars than in the rest of European countries. I don't if it's true but I can assure that here in Spain are A LOT of bars in every city/town. Bars are still the favourite place to socialize in my country, not necessarily just for the sake of drinking. So, a bar would be very welcome, it adds life to the city. Quote
Thetford Posted November 13, 2014 Posted November 13, 2014 In short, the American bar is a far cry from an English pub For the past couple of decades, pubs have been quite unprofitable, so many have become more "Gastro pubs", which serve food and accommodate families, a bit like how you describe your bar and grills. Quote
Off the wall Posted November 13, 2014 Posted November 13, 2014 There are no real bars left where I live near Atlanta. Everything is like Herky described. A family restaurant with a bar area. Quote

Herky Posted November 13, 2014 Posted November 13, 2014 I would almost say that in the US if you want a real bar, you look for a place called Tavern...an older word but I don't think I have ever seen the whole food experience at a tavern, but then there is only one tavern I know of these days and it isn't even where I live. One of the downfalls of the bar movement to a food place with a bar as well has been the laws that now prohibit smoking. I am not a smoker and do not really care for it, but most bars used to allow it and now if you serve food you can't allow smoking in a lot of places. Most college and universities have outlawed smoking on campus too so college town bars/taverns are getting fewer too. You almost have to serve food to get by which means no smoking which cuts down on much other than the family atmosphere or college party too. Quote
JDW Posted November 13, 2014 Posted November 13, 2014 Weird...I've lived in 3 southern states and there have always been plenty of bars in each one (not just restaurant/bar combos). I've always lived in a larger city or a college town though. Back on topic--it does seem strange that we'd get a modular with a barber shop, a bar-type area, and a detective agency all together. I don't think it would look that strange, as many businesses share buildings, but it seems odd that Lego would pack that much in when usually the modulars are more narrowly themed. Quote
Roger_Smith Posted November 13, 2014 Posted November 13, 2014 Let's just wait and see. If I recall correctly, there's an announcement on Nov 21 that's supposedly about the next modular. Quote

I live in central Illinois and we generally refer to such places (Applebee's, Texas Roadhouse, TGI Fridays, etc.) as restaurants. Granted I live in a college town; but there are numerous bars, even outside the campus area. Many serve food and most offer DJs or live music on most nights. But there are some that do neither and simply serve alcohol. Quote
Faefrost Posted November 13, 2014 Posted November 13, 2014 There are no real bars left where I live near Atlanta. Everything is like Herky described. A family restaurant with a bar area. There used to be a moderately decent "British Pub" in Old Norcross. It still had some restaurant seating and food, but at least it had a real bar and a dart board. If you want a decent pool table design hunt down the online instructions for Yatkuu's Sean of the Dead Winchester. Quote
K-Nut Posted November 13, 2014 Posted November 13, 2014 I'd really like a set akin to the Pet Shop. I've always liked that kind of modular set, and to see TLG bringing that design back into two very cool concepts (an old time barber shop and detective agency would complete my noir setup) is very interesting for me. Really looking forward to see what this thing looks like! Quote
Sven F Posted November 13, 2014 Posted November 13, 2014 A Bar in most of Europe that I've been to (excluding English & Irish pubs and night clubs) is a place that you go for coffee or tea during the day, with or without kids, you can drink a beer if you want or a non- alcoholic soda. In the evening it gets more crowded, louder and most people would probably drink something alcoholic, but not necessarily. You would not be likely to see any kids at this time, but it has more to do with late hours than anything else. I am more concerned about the earth & medium blue combination than yellow, the yellow can look good for sure, but i'm not digging the market place scheme one bit. Quote

Am guessing you are either in Champaign or Bloomington, been to both, am in St Louis...love college towns, Columbia MO has bars still very similar to what you say, and would like refer to those places as Bar and Grill since that is what they want. I personally think those big chains are not as good as the hometown mom and pop shops. Well, if Diggy is reliable, this is going to be one heck of a building, one week basically to go to find out.
