BrickG Posted January 11, 2014 Posted January 11, 2014 People always say "these aren't final" but basically every prelim I've seen leaked has been either 90% the same or exactly the same build wise, often the only element changing being the minifigures. Quote
Ultron Posted January 11, 2014 Posted January 11, 2014 It's quite nice that we're getting a cowled wolverine! But if wolverine gets a new mold when we already have a wolverine, we better get Storm's headpiece. And the sentinel is pretty bad..but I'm sure it will look better in the actual set. Well at least I hope so. I also hope we get another xmen in this set other than just wolverine and storm. Cyclops would be nice but I think I'd rather have jean grey. We need more marvel ladies. Mystique would also be welcome Quote
Samiens Posted January 11, 2014 Posted January 11, 2014 As I think someone else pointed out, while Batgirl's alter ego was in the Killing Joke fairly prominently she didn't actually appear as Batgirl at all. And the duck boat is a pretty overt Burtman reference, so I'm still gonna call the fedora Joker a movie throwback, just not a set actually based on the film. On this whole issue, its interesting to remember that Burton was heavily influenced by 'A Killing Joke', indeed he called it the first comic book he ever loved and so its natural they share some design features. I'd suggest that putting Batgirl in the joker set is either a bit of a reference to 'A Killing Joke' or just about getting a new fig in the most expensive set. On the Marvel sets- ive seriously gone off Marvel lately but if the sentinel is drastically improved i could be tempted, especially as I'm getting zero sets from the Spidey/Avengers wave. Quote

On the Marvel sets- ive seriously gone off Marvel lately but if the sentinel is drastically improved i could be tempted, especially as I'm getting zero sets from the Spidey/Avengers wave. I'm just saying in terms of exposure, the target audience is more likely to have seen the semi-goofy Burton movie Joker than read the Killing Joke, since that's not exactly a 5-8yr-old's comic book. As for putting Batgirl in it, I'm chalking that up to her being part of the Bat-family (which Lego is pushing most among DC properties) and it's the most expensive set of the wave. Plus they need some incentive to buy that set considering the otherwise mostly rehashed figures and that god-awful batplane. As neat as Sabertooth or Mystique would be I'm -really- hoping for another X-man in the Blackbird set. I'm with everyone else in assuming 5 figures considering the price point, so I'm really hoping Cyclops (seems obvious from the picture), Storm, Wolverine and Beast (though I know he won't be in there, he's my favorite actual X-man) vs. Magneto/Sentinel, since they just had to rehash two figures we already got. Here's also hoping we hear something about a summer DC wave during the toy fairs. My Justice League needs a Green Lantern. And Martian Manhunter of course, but I'm not as much a fan of him; Green Lantern's my favorite DC hero alongside Flash. Surely they won't have so many Marvel sets for 2014 and leave us with just the 4 new Batman sets for DC. -Surely.- Quote

Big-fig included, possibly? One way or the other though, 336 pieces doesn't sound good for the actual build quality including both the jet and the sentinel. I'm assuming the price-per-piece ratio on that big GotG set will be because of Groot. Quote
wesker Posted January 11, 2014 Posted January 11, 2014 If there's gonna be a next x-men set (please), it better be the x-mansion to complete our x-men group. The X-Mansion would be great but that alone won't be enough to complete the X-Men. Look at all the characters we still haven't gotten - Jean/Phoenix, Beast, Iceman, Angel/Archangel, Colossus, Nightcrawler, Rogue, Gambit, Shadowcat, Professor X etc. Then you have villains like Mystique, Sabretooth, Apocalypse, Sinister and Juggernaught on top of that. If the Sentinel and Blackbird were two separate releases we might have scored an extra three of those characters. One X-Men set every two years isn't enough to cover the brand. I think the problem with that would be that the print would cross onto multiple pieces. Just looking at it; the head seems to be comprised of a round plate then a round brick (with the printing on the side) and the very top is a dome (like R2D2's head). It looks more like this part: Quote
SoupOrFishOil Posted January 11, 2014 Posted January 11, 2014 76022 X-Men (Sentinel) – 336 pcs – $50 That's not a good sign for the build itself, but I bet that there is another exclusive mold or two aside from Wolverine's cowl keeping that piece count low. Quote

GuntherThePenguin Posted January 11, 2014 Posted January 11, 2014 50 dollars???? The Blackbird and other minifigures better be amazing! I am so incredibly disappointed by the Sentinel but I'm digging Wolverine and obviously the new Storm. Quote
Kez Posted January 11, 2014 Posted January 11, 2014 Ooh yes its great that wolverine is getting a new mask, and I hope those pieces on the sentinel will be printed. What a place for lego to put flick fires, well I suppose it could've been worse The duplo sets look kinda neat too, even though I wont buy them, Imo lego is realising too much for my wallet to handle this year Quote
Pumpkin Pie Posted January 11, 2014 Posted January 11, 2014 (edited) Interesting Sentinel and I'm excited for the Blackbird. When do the known new Spidey sets and the Batman/Penguin and Batman Steamroller sets come out in the US? Thanks Edited January 11, 2014 by Pumpkin Pie Quote
Numbuh1Nerd Posted January 11, 2014 Posted January 11, 2014 Also, what I really wish is that DC would run some cartoons for the sets to be based on like Ultimate Spider-man, in the sense of adding more obscure characters. Brave and the Bold has been gone for a bit now, so they probably won't be using that as a source, but as bad as the cartoon is, Ultimate Spider-man is the only reason we've gotten Iron Fist/Power Man/Nova (though we may have gotten Nova in GotG sets later depending on how the movie goes). It's too bad DC isn't pushing their other characters a little harder, or at least running a JL cartoon (as far as I know there isn't one on the air right now?). Would like to see some support characters like Black Manta, Professor Zoom/Reverse Flash, Martian Manhunter and obviously Green Lantern and Sinestro. I'm sure they wouldn't base a set off of Brave and the Bold, but they should be using it's basic set-up of Batman + A-C List Hero + A-C List Villain. There isn't a Justice League cartoon on, heck, Cartoon Network can't even commit to a Batman cartoon! Beware the Batman has been put on hiatus after one (maybe only half of one) season, and will likely go the way of Young Justice and get cancelled before they get the chance to develop a real fanbase. It's really a shame that they keep cancelling all of these very good cartoons but are putting the awful Teen Titans Go on a pedestal (and we can't even get a Teen Titans set based on it!) They should've kept Green Lantern TAS and Beware the Batman and built up a new Animated Universe that could feed into an eventual Justice League. But no, if it doesn't captivate the hearts of 8-11 year olds in two episodes it has to go. At least keep Beware on long enough for us to get sets based directly on it so we get characters like Metamorpho or Katana. I am very very happy to be getting Cowled Wolverine however I am a bit gutted that LEGO are up to their old tricks. There is only ONE existing X-Men set and in this new one we are getting two of thw three existing figures. Ugh. Anyway I am happy to be getting him! Sentinel looks okay, but I like it. It seems pretty expected that they would do that, since the first set should be going out of print soon (I think?). I'd rather we got the same Magneto than that 70's nightmare. The Sentinel is really disappointing, since it could've made a perfect set on its own. I'm hoping this means we're getting more than just Wolverine, Storm, and Disco Magneto. At least toss in Cyclops! Quote
North Lego Star Posted January 11, 2014 Posted January 11, 2014 I think lego should have really just split the and Sentinel and Blackbird into two different sets, but if Guardians of the Galaxy are going to be that big(which I don't think they will be) then maybe it's an okay decision, hoepfully they'll improve the design of the Sentinel a lot though. Quote
Numbuh1Nerd Posted January 11, 2014 Posted January 11, 2014 Great news on the cowl. But, that can't possibly be the final draft Sentinel - it looks nothing like the video game version.... I mean we are getting an entire set (the spider copter) from a 2 second glimpse in the video game (it was never in the USM cartoon)... The video game version was a giant minifig with some silver and gold bricks stuck on the front, I don't think anybody expected that to be the official Sentinel. I think the Spider Copter was made before the game, and they stuck that in for free advertising. Quote
Oky Posted January 11, 2014 Posted January 11, 2014 It seems my suspicions were correct. After Hulk, Cap, and Falcon turned out pretty much how they looked in the Avengers Assembled Lego variant comic cover I figured we'd eventually get a Wolverine that looks like this too. I like it. The Sentinel does look a bit silly with that long R2-D2 head and it looks a bit small, but kudos to the designers for making a Sentinel with so few parts. I'm a little disappointed that we're getting Magneto again, but at least he seems to be a new variant too. Let's hope the set comes with at least two more X-Men. And I don't get the hate for the Duplo sets either. They look quite cute, although Bobskink's customs were better as they didn't look so young. It's not like they affect the System line in any way or are inappropriate for young children. They just depict Batman happily cruising around in his vehicles while the Joker blows bubbles. If they depicted some of the darker stories in the Bat-mythos or included characters like Green Lantern that we haven't seen in System sets yet, I could understand the anger, but I'm perfectly fine with what we have seen so far. In fact, this might be good news as it could mean that they are moving the Batman and Superman centric sets to Duplo and Juniors and will focus more on the rest of the DC Universe in the System sets, but that's just wishful thinking. Numbuh1Nerd Posted January 12, 2014 Posted January 12, 2014 Sentinels have been made in various sizes and styles over the years. Some were only slightly taller than a person and others larger than buildings. These days we even have Evangelion like sentinels I think the size they went with is fine. A set with just minifigs and a big sentinel would look boring to little kids. They made a set like that with the Lex Luthor Mech and it sold pretty well. Of course, they could've made a big Sentinel and included a much smaller vehicle or something and made THAT a whole set. Maybe if what you said about the various sizes is going through LEGO's corporate head we'll get a bigger, more accurate one down the line. If they would've made the build for the Sentinel look better, I don't think I would have much problem with the size, but it's just so bleh. They somehow managed to make my favorite version of Wolverine. Good job Lego! I still think we'll be seeing a character flying the plane. My guess is either professor Xavier or Cyclops. It's weird that we've seen 2/3 of that prelim picture, but are lacking the middle part. I highly doubt it will be Xavier. If we get him at all (I think we will) he'll be in an X-Mansion set in his floating wheelchair. Cyclops is the most likely, since he's one of the most well-known after Wolverine and Storm. Given what we've gotten so far, soon enough we'll get the X-Mansion with Jean Grey, Gambit, Rogue, Charles, Beast, and Mystique, as well as another Magneto or Wolverine. I'm just saying in terms of exposure, the target audience is more likely to have seen the semi-goofy Burton movie Joker than read the Killing Joke, since that's not exactly a 5-8yr-old's comic book. Surely they won't have so many Marvel sets for 2014 and leave us with just the 4 new Batman sets for DC. -Surely.- I'm not saying they did that to cash in on the Killing Joke, but it seems to be a reference for the older fans. I'm expecting us to get Cyborg before we get Martian Manhunter, although Green Lantern has got to be coming in the near future. It's pretty apparent at this point that they're trying to make it as "New 52" as possible, and that means our JL line-up is likely to be Supes, Batsy, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Flash, Aquaman, and Cyborg. I know we'll get Martian Manhunter one of these days though. I think Shadowcat and Nightcrawler won't be coming for quite a while, since neither of them even appeared in the game (and when you have over 150 characters, there's good reason you left out 2 very important X-Men and included Howard the Duck) but I think we may wind up with Psylocke. I think we'll probably just be getting Cyclops, Wolverine, Rogue, Storm, Beast, Gambit, Iceman, Jean Grey, and Professor X for a while, though I hope Archangel, Colossus, and Nightcrawler come soon after. maybe if the x-men movies would actually focus on characters besides Wolverine we'd get to see those characters in other things. Shadowcat got screwed on Days of Future Past and she owns a frickin' dragon where's her movie???? Quote
The-Daryl Posted January 12, 2014 Posted January 12, 2014 The video game version was a giant minifig with some silver and gold bricks stuck on the front, I don't think anybody expected that to be the official Sentinel. Ya, my bad on that; I was misremembering. I thought it was a sturdier/thicker (than that proto photo) brick build. I loaded the game this afternoon and realized it was just an oversized minifig. So Sentinel LEGO clock for scale ;) Quote

It is possible though, but I'd rather have Colossus. Quote
gedren_y Posted January 12, 2014 Posted January 12, 2014 (edited) From what I've seen of the X-Men set, it looks like they are basing the designs off of the original Uncanny X-Men comic art. Uncanny X-Men 142 cover has Storm and Wolverine battling a sentinel. Storm doesn't have her tiara in that image (Marvel.com DOFP covers). Magneto in the set could be working with the X-Men as the figure seems to be based off of the future Magneto from the aborted timeline. The yellow gloved figure could be Kitty Pride, as she is one of the feature characters in that issue and wore yellow gloves in several different costumes. Edited January 12, 2014 by gedren_y Quote
Freddy Bricker Posted January 12, 2014 Posted January 12, 2014 I wonder how much piece count that Sentinel will take up, the Blackbirds gonna be real small. Wolverine looks nice and I can see the Sentinel getting about 2 more pieces at the legs to make it look bulkier and maybe something on the shoulders. Of course this is just pure speculation and I bet the only thing changing will be some minor details on pieces we already see getting swapped out for others just like how the spider cycle got a few pieces on its front get moved out. Freddy Bricker Posted January 12, 2014 Posted January 12, 2014 Then again, Wolverine doesn't have a cowl in those covers either. Which would add more to (was it Oky's, Aanchir's, somebody's) point that these sets are supposed to be using characters and the like from DoFP without completely basing the designs or the figures off of the movie. I am pretty damn sure that had DoFP not be scheduled to come out this summer, we'd either see no X-Men sets, or just the Black Bird without any sign of a sentinel. But maybe kids buy comics and watch T.V shows from the 90's to stay updated on a set of that kind? If I didn't know any better, not very many kids nowadays actually buy comics, their knowledge sprouts from T.V shows and movies (though that's most, not all). Quote
