Is that the one that will be in sets or the one they used for filming the movie?

Certainly one that will be in sets, the helmet mold differs somewhat from an actual vintage helmet (well, even aside the crack) and, as you say, the "faded" logo is printed that way.

I tried to do my own Benny a while ago, but none of my old blue helmets were actually broken. White, yellow, red, black yes, but all the blue ones were like new. Not even any of the torsos was faded enough. Never thought I'd consider that to be unfortunate :D

I am not sure if that is the movie 'prop' or the minifig that will be in the sets.

My guess is that it was the one in the movie. It looks too worn out to be one of the ones from the sets, especially compared to your avatar, which I assume is what the set fig will look like.

Little to add to existing discussions, but I am curious: am I the only one that would be down for a set that collected all the MicroManager designs? Make it an exclusive somewhere, call it 'MicroManager Mayhem' or something. The little buggers just cry out for armybuilding and kitbashing.

Ceir, not quite on point, but why don't you check this thread...?

Also, the Lego Store is having a Micro Manager build on Tuesday the 4th. If you have a kid (or can borrow one) and can get to the store, it's free.

Chris Miller on Twitter has posted a pic of the Benny fig in the flesh!

If that's the real Benny figure, that's awesome! I wonder if we'd ever see the helmet mold in the other traditional space colors?

As the movie is CGI made to look like stop-motion, there is no movie prop used for filming.

Reportedly, the movie is mostly computer-animated, but with a certain amount of actual stop-motion, apparently done using real LEGO bricks. The filmmakers have been quoted as saying they want people to have a hard time distinguishing between the CGI and the stop-motion.

I am so jazzed for both this hilarious-looking movie and the theme it's supporting; both look wonderful. I've been torn over frequenting this thread, though, since on the one hand I don't want a bunch of spoilers for the movie, but on the other I want to be sure I catch as much news as possible about the actual sets, for all the promotions and whatnot that might be tied to specific dates and times before the movie is actually released. I doubt I'll be able to get all the polybags and whatnot, but I'd certainly like to try. If I may ask, could we get those added to the initial post along with all the boxed retail sets, and perhaps include a little bit of text for each one summarizing what we know about where and when it will be available?

I thought the later said it will all be CGI and that that was a misquote:

"Nope, that comment is a misquote of what Chris and Phil said. They said there is a live action part, not a stop motion one. The journalist assumed photographic stop motion. Every single pixel of that trailer is CG."

In the Behind the Bricks video, you can clearly tell it's CGI. There's a part with Benny and he's shaking all excitedly and is moving in a way that isn't possible in real life.

Just to confuse this whole debate, the Benny figure could be the one they're selling in the sets, or it could be one they made as a reference point for designing CGI Benny.

I did see that (and loved it!), but of course most of that isn't part of the actual movie, so it wouldn't necessarily reflect the actual production. Note that while that video contains fairly extensive flexing of minifigure elements (in ways that aren't possible with real minifigures, but that are pretty common with animated ones in the various videogames and CG animated shorts), the actual movie footage that we've seen so far contains much less of that sort of thing, and what little is there is more subtle.

That said, the quote just2good provides above seems to settle it (although I'm curious about the mention of the trailer, as opposed to the movie overall). I actually had read early on that there would be a little live-action in the movie, but it had been so long since I'd seen anything more said about that that I was beginning to think that plan might have been abandoned. But there was never much question that at least the great majority of the movie would be CG animation, if not all or nearly all.

Back to that Benny pic... could it be one of the filmmakers' childhood figures, inspiring the movie character?

Definately not. If you look at the torso logo you can for sure se that its a print. The helmet plastic thickness look to thick.

I have some 12 old blue classic space guys and none of them look like that logo at all. The gold color has dissapeared, but thats about it. :)

It could be that its just a prototype for the final . Or maybe this is the real deal. LEGO making it look really vintage and worn out.

If so they have done a very good job.

Well, all that plus the fact no minifigure face from the 1980s had a printed facial expression so exuberant as Benny's. I didn't remember it when I wrote my previous post, since it's not on this page of the thread. Here, let's rectify that:

Looking at that now, it certainly appears to be a recently-produced simulation of an aged figure, rather than an actual aged figure, but also not one used as a stop-motion puppet (if there is indeed any actual stop-motion in the movie at all; presumably we'll find out for sure from the movie's credits). I'm therefore going to assume this is a production Benny the Spaceman minifigure, as he'll appear in the lovely neo-Classic spaceship set (and that TLG gave him to Chris Miller the same way they gave the major cast members of The Hobbit copies of their characters' minifigures). The bit of dust that's on him and the way the light is hitting him in the picture probably makes this Benny figure look older than it actually is.

Thanks for that Risgrynsgrot hope the movie is as fun and there could be a second one if it does well

I thought it was the actual actor before he went on set - he wouldn't wear that blue space suit unless they were shooting soon, and I think that smile would be hard to maintain.
