TNT apples Posted February 20, 2014 Posted February 20, 2014 I'm feeling quite glad that I bought the sets I really wanted before the movie came out, it seems like they're selling very quickly Quote
Archer Posted February 20, 2014 Posted February 20, 2014 Bad Cop's Pursuit and Cloud Cuckoo Palace absolutely should NOT have been made into a single set. Cloud Cuckoo Palace is the only set at the $20 price-point, and has sold gangbusters as a result (selling out at a number of retailers as well as Lego.com). $40 sets are a much harder sell, and there are already tons of Lego Movie sets at the $30 price point that your proposed set would suddenly be in direct competition with. So while it might suit AFOLs like you or me if Lego were to bundle sets together, it's horrible business for appealing to the mass market. True, I hadn't thought about it being the only $20 set. It is the only other current set where Bad Cops hover thing is relevant but yeah my idea would mess with a set that was great already. Maybe my gripe could have been fixed is Bad cops hoverthing was released as only a $20 set, no bridge. The bridge/train scene was cool in the film, but that part of the set is a very tiny version of its movie counterpart, and not in a good way like Cloud Cuckoo. Why beef it up to $30 when you already have 4 or 5 (we can kinda throw Metal Beard's Duel in there) sets at that price range. I highly doubt that the bridge was the selling point on that set for more than a handful of people,(I suppose it's a great way to get those zig zag support beams and alligators) Obviously It didn't stop me from buying the set and its only a small annoyance. Not so interested in that other one. I like the way they packaged them JUST FINE thank you very much :) Quote
Lego Spy Posted February 21, 2014 Posted February 21, 2014 The Sea Cow is a D2C set, and D2C sets are primarily meant for older teen/adult builders and collectors. The same case is seen with The Simpsons House. It's not a wide-release retail set in any way. I imagine the Sea Cow is aimed at adult fans of the film (like my wife and I, hopefully getting ours today) and I think the film has universal appeal enough to support that- i know plenty of non-afol adults without kids who have seen or will see it. The key is simply whether theyve produced the right level of stock for the segment of customers who will buy it! That makes sense, but I still don't see it selling too well. Then again, I guess that's what the lower production is for. -ish. TRU should be getting them mid to late June, whereas Lego Stores will be getting them in by mid July. Most other retailer are subject to their own discretion or are subject to a labeled street date (usually mid-August, but again, it's to their own discretion). My birthday's in early July, so hopefully they'll be out in at least TRU by then. Quote
BlueberryWaffles Posted February 21, 2014 Posted February 21, 2014 Mine's in very late July. hopefully someone will have them so I can get my SPACESHIP! I just got the Evil Lair. Great set. Lord Business is REAAAAAALLY tall. Quote
AFOLguy1970 Posted February 21, 2014 Posted February 21, 2014 Thank goodness. Anyway, I think that this has been discussed before, but what audience is the Sea Cow supposed to appeal to? That's a terrible wording, since who doesn't it appeal to ( ), but most people can't pull $250+ out of their pocket on a regular day, and since TLM is generally geared toward a younger audience, how do you think Lego will make a profit off this set? Hopefully they did not make the same mistake that was made in wave 2 of Lord of the Rings. They designed the $100 Pirate Ship Ambush because, hey, kids like pirate ships. I saw lots of them on the shelf in the Lego Store and in Walmart recently. While a whole lot of kids may want the Sea Cow, I do not see many of them being able to afford it. Most adults will not want to spend that kind of money either. I would buy it if I had that kind of money lying around, but I do not. Priorities will require me to take a pass at this. Other than collectors, resellers, pirate ship fanatics, very determined kids who mow enough lawns, and completionists, I do not see a large market for this. Quote
Samiens Posted February 21, 2014 Posted February 21, 2014 While you might be right, I'm sure they wanted to do a large D2C and there aren't many good options in the movie really from what I could see. (As Ive bought it I'm clearly part of the market for it!) Quote
BlueberryWaffles Posted February 21, 2014 Posted February 21, 2014 Actually the Dog, the top of the tower, or the sub could have been D2C sets. Quote
TNT apples Posted February 21, 2014 Posted February 21, 2014 Actually the Dog, the top of the tower, or the sub could have been D2C sets. I would have definitely bought it if it was the sub, would've included the same minifigures too... Quote
Lyichir Posted February 21, 2014 Posted February 21, 2014 (edited) Actually the Dog, the top of the tower, or the sub could have been D2C sets. The Dog didn't have any play features outside of hosting a huge number of figs (many of which would require external licenses), so it would have been a horrible fit for a D2C set. The sub is a better bet, but honestly people who are put off by an attractive steampunk pirate ship would feel even worse about a model that was literally designed to be a mishmash of parts and building styles. The Sea Cow is probably the most marketable model in terms of potential D2C sets in the movie. Edited February 21, 2014 by Lyichir Quote
Samiens Posted February 22, 2014 Posted February 22, 2014 Exactly, I think you need to be far more hard core to buy the sub than the pirateship (plus I wonder if there's some issue with Batman licensing in sets- we only get him in 1 movie set with no Bat-vehicles at all). For the other things, the dig has been covered and the top of the tower is basically a build that would be a gigantic black square with an interior. Quote

The Sea Cow is probably the most marketable model in terms of potential D2C sets in the movie. D2C sets really don't have many play features, look at the simpsons house. You play with the figs inside the house, there's no flick missels in it. They could make the set half the dog, so that kids can still play with it, and adults can buy 2 to complete it. There can be some play features, Lincoln's chair flying through the wall, a flip-out wall function for the golf ball, and, well, being able to put 70 minifigs in it! The set wouldn't be aimed at 6 year olds anyway, it would be aimed at 10+ and adults. Quote

You can take the figs up and down the stairs, pose them on the couch, put them in the car and drive them around, etcetera, etcetera. Compare that with the Dog, which is for all intents and purposes an auditorium. The play features you suggest are decent, but your comment about the minifigures highlights the problem with it—the figures are what make that scene, and having enough figures to populate a set like that is impractical. On top of that, it's just a bizarre looking scene. Already the main complaint about the Sea Cow among AFOLs is that it's expensive and won't fit in with their collections of other themes. The dog is that times a million—I don't think it's a mistake that the very experimental Cloud Cuckoo Palace set targeted a very affordable price point. Quote
Themadpatter Posted February 22, 2014 Posted February 22, 2014 (edited) I think there could be plenty of play features for the Dog: Flick fire golf balls. Pull a lever part of the roof comes off so the super secret police can get in. Collapsing wall for Metal Beard to break in. Catapults so you can easily throw food at Emmet. Swooshable police ships. Ecetera Ecetera. And, although it wouldn't be movie accurate, to solve the minifigure problem you could make it smaller. Edited February 22, 2014 by Themadpatter Quote
HawkLord Posted February 22, 2014 Posted February 22, 2014 Found the Super Secret Police Enforcer polybag at TRU - $4.99 but it's listed in their system as "promo" so it can be used with their current buy-one-get-one-half-off sale. Hadn't seen it in the wild before. Quote

Hadn't seen it in the wild before. Wow, about time. I've been checking TRU weekly and still haven't seen it. My two TRUs tend to sell out of polybags, but they don't sell out THAT fast...so either they were all snatched up, or they're finally starting to show. Anyone else? Also, anyone seen the Wyldstyle poly yet? Quote
LegendsOfNinjago Posted February 24, 2014 Posted February 24, 2014 Guess I'll have to go check my TRU. So with the Lego Movie 2 in theadres May 26, 2017...do you think it'll have the same set coverage as the first one? Quote
Zorglorfian Posted February 25, 2014 Posted February 25, 2014 I just ordered two of the Super Secret Police Enforcer bags. It'll be great alongside the other characters on the shelf. Also, anyone know where to get the Micro Manager Battle polybag? Thanks! Quote
TheBrickPal Posted February 28, 2014 Posted February 28, 2014 Just a little chat I overheard between a Brick Specialist and customer whilst at the LEGO Store last Friday. "I'm looking for Uni-Kitty! Do you have her?" *feels CMF packets* "I don't think you'll find her in those." That person sounded so desperate for a Uni-Kitty figure that their last resort was the blind bags, even though it clearly advertises that she is not included in the series. At that time, the Cloud Cuckoo Palace was out of stock. Luckily, I got mine in December! Quote

Zorglorfian Posted February 28, 2014 Posted February 28, 2014 I'm dying to get the Super Cycle Chase, but I want to get it at a lower price. Anyone know of any sales or when the price would drop later in the year? Thanks! Quote
jonwil Posted February 28, 2014 Posted February 28, 2014 Come to Australia, we have plenty of LEGO Movie sets (since they have just been released here :) Quote

Anyone know of any sales or when the price would drop later in the year? Thanks! You can roll the dice with Target and see what goes on clearance in a few months. If they have any left, it'll presumably get hit by their slow markdowns. They tend to mark down 3 times--a little bit at first, then maybe to 30%, and eventually to 50%. Waiting it out only tends to work with pegwarmers and massive sets, though. Quote
