Lobot Posted March 23, 2014 Posted March 23, 2014 I'm quite optimistic about the potential for an updated UCS Falcon, the original source of the rumour seems reliable and the fact that it's been included in the recent advert is a great sign. I've said it before but it would be a highly inspired move by LEGO if they did this; the timing is perfect and it would be a great flagship for the brand. If you look at the vast up-surge in the number of EB members in the last 3 years (around 100K) as an indicator of the current popularity of LEGO, there's got to be a decent market for it. I'm not one to bet, but I'll be very surprised if we don't get one sometime in the next year Quote
Darth Mallet Posted March 23, 2014 Posted March 23, 2014 I think he means retail exclusives. Last year we had the Jedi Defender-class Cruiser and HH-87 Skyhopper. I think he means retail exclusives. Last year we had the Jedi Defender-class Cruiser and HH-87 Skyhopper. probably why I don't remember as I'm not a fan of EU sets. Even the CW sets are a no no for me. OT and PT for me, in that order Quote
sj1984 Posted March 23, 2014 Posted March 23, 2014 That's the internet for you! The whole board seems rather tetchy at the minute... Must be the time of the month... ;) See, that's not an appropriate comment. Surprised nobody called you out on that (particularly staff....) Anyway, whilst Lego tend to release two UCS sets a year, there's no reason why they couldn't release three this year. It's not set in stone that they're only allowed to release two - they can change it up should it be profitable, which it would be (as it's SW...). Quote

N8thanAshley Posted March 23, 2014 Posted March 23, 2014 A UCS falcon anywhere near the scale of the original is never goin to happen. A few aftermarket sales is no reflection of the thousands of sales that would be required to justify a rerelease of a set that didn't sell the first time around at $500. It was too big and too expensive then, and at today's price per piece it would cost $700+ The SSD didn't sell at considerably less. The village is selling, the Death Star sold well, and why, because kids want them, not just 'mature' collectors. They'll continue selling the falcon for years to come I imagine, especially once it makes an appearance in the new films, but with 5k pieces? I don't think so! Quote
Toby Adams Posted March 23, 2014 Posted March 23, 2014 The whole UCS Falcon disscusion is confusing, are we getting it or not? Quote

Sir_Basil_Ashton Posted March 23, 2014 Posted March 23, 2014 I'm too tired/lazy to search for the original UCS Falcon re-release rumor but I don't recall a rumored release date, just that someone had a credible source. For an updated/new UCS Falcon to succeed, I believe it would have to be as big as 10179 and have a similar piece count. That similar piece count would translate into a higher MSRP than 10179. I hope I'm wrong though. Quote
Robert_88 Posted March 23, 2014 Posted March 23, 2014 Absolutely, a new Falcon with e.g. 3000 pieces would be the worst set that TLG could release. Quote
HanShotFirst Posted March 23, 2014 Posted March 23, 2014 Absolutely, a new Falcon with e.g. 3000 pieces would be the worst set that TLG could release. It would anger the people a rerelease would anger and disappoint the people looking forward to a rerelease. I'm getting a headache just thinking about it. It would be one heck of a mess for everyone involved. Quote
Freddy Bricker Posted March 23, 2014 Posted March 23, 2014 (edited) I'd like to have some kind of confirmation on the rumored Falcon. I need to know whether or not to get the old one or save up for a possible new one. Though with all of these comments, I think I'll save the money for a possible one in the future Edited March 23, 2014 by Freddy Bricker Quote
Darth Malgus Posted March 24, 2014 Posted March 24, 2014 Not too sure that its required until the movie comes out. I mean the UCS X-Wing came almost 10 years after the first so in 18 months or so it'd be getting closer to that 10 years from the first falcon. There are other sets that LEgo could give the UCS treatment to first... Quote
darththeling Posted March 24, 2014 Posted March 24, 2014 The Falcon makes sense, this year it doesn't. It makes much more sense next year when episode VII is released. Quote
Steph 104th Posted March 24, 2014 Posted March 24, 2014 I would like to see a Nebulon-B Medical frigate as an UCS Quote
N8thanAshley Posted March 24, 2014 Posted March 24, 2014 I would like to see a Nebulon-B Medical frigate as an UCS That would be amazing, I'd like that too, but unless it appears in the new films it'll never happen Quote
legolandia Posted March 24, 2014 Posted March 24, 2014 First i want to say: not sure if we are supposed to talk about the Falcon in here or not. If the former then my thoughts are below, if the later then i apologise in advance to Brickdoctor (and please delete this post if it is not suitable for here). A UCS falcon anywhere near the scale of the original is never goin to happen. A few aftermarket sales is no reflection of the thousands of sales that would be required to justify a rerelease of a set that didn't sell the first time around at $500. It was too big and too expensive then, and at today's price per piece it would cost $700+ The SSD didn't sell at considerably less. They'll continue selling the falcon for years to come I imagine, especially once it makes an appearance in the new films, but with 5k pieces? I don't think so! Never say never my friend. You can't be absolutely certain about that since you are not Lego. Even Lego can't be that certain about what they release in the future since it is not entirely dependant on them. And dont forget that the fans' number have increased since then too. The new SW VII film is bound to give the numbers a further boost too. It will certainly create hype and hype definitely sells. Trust me, I have learned that lesson myself through all the years of collecting all sorts of stuff. Where has all the info about what sold and didnt sell well come from? Is it from an official source? How do you know that there are only a few aftermarket sales? Have you kept records? Absolutely, a new Falcon with e.g. 3000 pieces would be the worst set that TLG could release. How? If a Falcon with a lot less pieces (1000 or so) was quite good then how can one with 3 times more be the worst set? And as 'hungry' as the fans are at the moment for a Falcon larger than 'normal' they would devour any larger Falcon that Lego brings out. Apart from that the Lego building methods have advanced since the UCS Falcon was last released and new pieces have been added to the arsenal so you never know, Lego may be able to do a great job with less pieces. It would anger the people a rerelease would anger and disappoint the people looking forward to a rerelease. I'm getting a headache just thinking about it. It would be one heck of a mess for everyone involved. It's the way of the world really. You can't please all. For every 100 happy ones there wil always be a few that moan about it. It keeps the balance in the Force I suppose Quote

Apart from that the Lego building methods have advanced since the UCS Falcon was last released and new pieces have been added to the arsenal so you never know, Lego may be able to do a great job with less pieces. Because the set would be very expensive and still not big enough for fans. New models must not be a step backwards because we always expect more. Quote
TheBear Posted March 25, 2014 Posted March 25, 2014 Lego base their decisions on what they think will sell rather than the opinions of some hardcore fans, otherwise we would have got Marshal Banana's sandcrawler for £1000 instead of the one we are getting. A swooshable Falcon with a decent interior that is smaller than the UCS but bigger than 7965 would probably sell a lot better than a rehashing of the old UCS at £700. Quote
Mr. Elijah Timms Posted March 25, 2014 Posted March 25, 2014 The last Falcon is still on shelves for some retailers. Though it hasn't officially stopped TLG before (X-Wing), I'd think they'd like a bit of a cushion between a re-release of the same design. Quote
BrickG Posted March 25, 2014 Posted March 25, 2014 When it comes to a $700 Falcon the measurement in Lego sales isn't the only thing to consider. That thing would make the news over and over like the first one did. Sales would be measured more than just of the set but of the advertising and attention Lego as a whole would get. Now if that would make it worth it (the first UCS Falcon didn't seem to be a huge financial success) I have no idea but it's something to think about for Lego. Quote

Is it from an official source? How do you know that there are only a few aftermarket sales? Have you kept records? You've said nothing to convince me any different. Yes, I monitor the aftermarket sales of the falcon, there's is about one a week, average, but I don't need to monitor it, it's nothing compared to the original sales, and the original sales were abysmal, it's widely known. I cannot predict the future you're right, no one can, but, they won't make another 5k piece falcon for $500, that is a fact! I don't need to predict the future to know that. That is an interesting thought, and makes some sense to me.
