Kumbbl Posted July 18, 2013 Posted July 18, 2013 Just build it: http://www.designer-han.nl/lego/8421xl.htm Apart from the better outriggers of the 42009 this monster is the real big crane - at least IMHO ;-) Mostly cause of the pneumatic (instead of the LAs), the smoother boom extension and the synchronized winch... Well, it's more or less the 8421 but there are people out there who like it really big ... ;-) BTW: just adding the double pneumatic stuff to the standard 8421 increases usability a lot because the boom can stay at top upper position very long (overnight in my case)... 750ACE Posted July 18, 2013 Posted July 18, 2013 Let me ask you, did you import the parts list into Bricklink wish list? What is the overall cost of this build? Quote
CisFran Posted July 18, 2013 Posted July 18, 2013 I'll try to build this one. I have 2 sets of 8421.. Just needs the small link thread, I think I can salvage the one in the Power puller set Quote
Kumbbl Posted July 18, 2013 Author Posted July 18, 2013 Let me ask you, did you import the parts list into Bricklink wish list? What is the overall cost of this build? No, this was not necessary: i Build it from my already owned parts ;-) Quote
Kumbbl Posted July 18, 2013 Author Posted July 18, 2013 (edited) BTW: The site of Han contains some of the most astonishing and elaborated MOCs i know, e.g. the - Prinoth Leitwolf with Power Functions - Articulated Hauler And the offered MODs are all of them very recommendable, escpecially these ones for the Crane truck 8258... N-4K0 Posted July 18, 2013 Posted July 18, 2013 This huge crane might have better features than the 42009, but it's way too big for my personal taste. By the looks of it, it would take up half of my desk. Quote
skriblez Posted July 18, 2013 Posted July 18, 2013 I would really like it but i don't have the parts :( Designer-Han is awesome in his designs. Really want to build all the mocs he has! Quote
Junpei Posted July 18, 2013 Posted July 18, 2013 Man, I wish I had the money for all those parts... Just wondering, why are there 8868 wheels in the mlcad close-up pictures? Also, what does the buggymotor drive? Quote
Meatman Posted July 18, 2013 Posted July 18, 2013 Did you actually build it, or is just done on the computer? Quote
designer-han Posted July 18, 2013 Posted July 18, 2013 Man, I wish I had the money for all those parts... Just wondering, why are there 8868 wheels in the mlcad close-up pictures? At that time the original 8421 wheels were not available as mlcad part. So initially I used the 8868 wheels. And I never corrected the mlcad close up pictures.... ;-) Quote

Junpei Posted July 18, 2013 Posted July 18, 2013 I checked the BL inventory, and there is only a manual pump, so I guess it's not the compressor. Quote
750ACE Posted July 18, 2013 Posted July 18, 2013 No, this was not necessary: i Build it from my already owned parts ;-) How did you verify all of the required parts vs the parts you owed? Literally check off one by one off the list? Quote
therealjustin Posted July 19, 2013 Posted July 19, 2013 I know I am in the minority here, but I really dislike pneumatic functions. The only interesting thing about them is that like hydraulic systems, pneumatics use air which is a fluid. The sagging after a day or two is not good for displaying and playability suffers from the jerky motion of the valves. Quote
rchan016 Posted July 19, 2013 Posted July 19, 2013 How did you verify all of the required parts vs the parts you owed? Literally check off one by one off the list? You can use rebrickable. Add all of the sets you own, then compare it to the moc. Quote
Kumbbl Posted July 19, 2013 Author Posted July 19, 2013 How did you verify all of the required parts vs the parts you owed? Literally check off one by one off the list? was not necessary too: i own a lot of "yellow" sets (a.o. 2x 8421, 8275, 8053, 8069, 8043, 2x 8455, 8432, 8459, 8862, 856) and also many others so i was quite sure haveing almost all needed parts, so i just get started with the build... You can use rebrickable. Add all of the sets you own, then compare it to the moc. AFAIK this 8421 XL is not listed on rebrickable... Man, I wish I had the money for all those parts... Just wondering, why are there 8868 wheels in the mlcad close-up pictures? Also, what does the buggymotor drive? it drives exactly the same functions as with the original 8421: boom extension (synchronized with the winch) and winch - switchable by a "gearbox" Quote
squizz Posted July 19, 2013 Posted July 19, 2013 Hi, i have not been on here for a very long time. But i have built this crane and it is one of my best models...everyone that see's this crane just loves it. Along time ago on this forum i asked if anyone had instructions to build it and Legonte was very kind to make the instructions for this model (thankyou very much for that) and Han now has the link for them on his site.I had the 8421 crane and scrounged the majority of the parts from my collection and only had to buy some extra pneumatics and chainlinks. I think this crane seams more in scale amd realistic than the original 8421. Thanks so much to you also Han, you designs and models are fantastic. I really enjoy building all your excellent models and carnt wait to see whats coming next. This is getting a little off the topic but, Hans 10 x 4 dump truck is probably one of the most technical and enjoyable models i have made and it too takes pride of place on my display cabnet. Quote
Kumbbl Posted July 19, 2013 Author Posted July 19, 2013 Thanks so much to you also Han, you designs and models are fantastic.  from me too.. Quote
clarkdef Posted July 19, 2013 Posted July 19, 2013 I have this set. I really don't like it, because it does not function well. At full extension it can barely lift itself and the buggy motor is very loud and rough sounding, also the clutches slip to easily making it weak at lifting from any position. Shes all looks. Quote
freakwave Posted July 19, 2013 Posted July 19, 2013 I guess we will soon see a 42009 X! Looking forward to it! Quote

I do not know what is wrong with yours, but i can not confirm any of your drawbacks - well, the buggy motor is louder than a current PF motor, indeed, but this is no problem for me... I guess we will soon see a 42009 X! probably but i doubt if this is a good idea, because IMO cranes (or more generally: models) of such a huge size reaches the limits what can be build with lego technic...at least, what can be reliable and senseful build with lego technic Quote

Outriggers are each powered seperately and jacks are independantly pneumatically operated. The winch will not be synchronised with the telescoping of the boom as that is not a normal function of a real mobile crane. Hopefully it will be completed by the end of the year, everytime something has to be modified it is a major event to dismantle it and then there is the delay in waiting for Bricklink orders to arrive. Anyway, that's not the topic here and of course everyone can build what he want to build and what makes fun to build... Quote
EyesOnly Posted July 19, 2013 Posted July 19, 2013 (edited) It sure is a nice crane but considering how long it takes to build the original i wont be building this anytime soon. Have other stuff to build. As for large Lego cranes, the best option is not telescopic ones but lattice boom cranes like this one. Ok so who will be first to make this into Lego. http://www.liebherr.com/en-GB/143610.wfw I'm guessing that combining 42009 with 42006 should work quite well. Ok thought all of it was new but found the product page so maybe those kinds of cranes have been made before. It was just the 1220 model that was new i guess. Edited July 19, 2013 by EyesOnly Quote
