clarkdef Posted July 19, 2013 Posted July 19, 2013 I do not know what is wrong with yours, but i can not confirm any of your drawbacks - well, the buggy motor is louder than a current PF motor, indeed, but this is no problem for me... If you look at the crane itself and the leverage that is over the pneumatics how could it? Would make sense it struggling at full extension, those pneumatic pumps aren't strong. Not a problem just modify it with more pumps! Which I did. Btw when as any stock technic set ever felt ultra capable... None IMO that's why you build your own stuff. Quote
750ACE Posted July 19, 2013 Posted July 19, 2013 I wish someone would post pics of the finished crane. Quote
gmshades Posted July 20, 2013 Posted July 20, 2013 I have built this crane in the past. http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=304058 Quote
SNIPE Posted July 20, 2013 Posted July 20, 2013 For a laugh I was gonna upscale it again but twice as big but it failed Quote
750ACE Posted July 20, 2013 Posted July 20, 2013 @gmshades: thanks. Now I wonder if I should obtain the necessary parts and build this for display. Quote
Saberwing40k Posted July 20, 2013 Posted July 20, 2013 Now, how is this crane better than 42009? I think that for lifting the boom of a crane, linear actuators are better, because they don't rely on air, which is a compressible fluid. Furthermore, 42009 looks much better because of the fact that it has a smoother, and less gap ridden body. Quote

Bricktrain Posted July 21, 2013 Posted July 21, 2013 dumb thread title. I guess you are qualified to comment on that This thread I started sucks. but not really very constructive. In the posters opinion it is better, maybe not in your opinion, I dont have either so I have no opinion on these. I hope that my mobile when completed is the best ever, however in a few years I expect I will no longer think it is. Quote
Kumbbl Posted July 22, 2013 Author Posted July 22, 2013 (edited) Fantastic moc but a dumb thread title. my first thought was: just ignore him... probably still the best way... But then i tought, why not - well, here we go, escpecially for you, my friend: IMHO this MOC is better than the 42009: - pneumatic instead of LAs (please not the 124. discussion about PN vs LA) because I find this more realistic and with this 4 cylinder approach it works very well - synchronized boom extraction and winch - 12 wheel instead of 10 and therefore a real huge crane - way too slow winch speed of the 42009 (more generally spoken: all operations of the 42009 are boring slow) - double differencials instead of just one - better look (yes, probably this is just my opinion because i do not like this modern panel look - the older models have more charme and look more like lego) - better outriggers (yes, you have read right, IMHO the 8421 are better even if not motorized because the ones of 42009 are way to slow in its performance - cause of the very long drive train from the L-motor to the outtriggers this is probably a must but nevertheless it this performance is boring) all this is just my humble opinion - you must not share it, but i'm allowed to post it. So, why should i not name this thread how i have named it? Please tell me what is dumb... Edited July 22, 2013 by Kumbbl Quote

There will always be something bigger and better than what Lego puts in mass production otherwise 4000+ part sets would be the norm. So yes there are many bigger mobile crane mocs than the 42009 :) Anyways, Designer Hans mocs in addition to his website and free instructions is what Lego moc'ing is all about. I hope to someday build this crane along with his 10x4 dump truck. Quote
Jurgen Krooshoop Posted July 22, 2013 Posted July 22, 2013 First of all thumbs up for designer Han !! Great Moc's and instructions. I've built this MOC, and here are my pro's and con's: Pro's: Size Looks Steering Double pneumatics Building experience Con's: Sliding out the crane has too of friction Chains break easily Sliding counterweight system is not properly fixed and can easily get loose I disassembled this model quickly after building it and reverted it back to the "normal" 8421, keeping the double pneumatics and using a heavier hook (by adding 2 more metal hooks. I think I'll preferr the new 42009 . Quote
Kumbbl Posted July 22, 2013 Author Posted July 22, 2013 Con's: Sliding out the crane has too of friction Chains break easily Sliding counterweight system is not properly fixed and can easily get loose the first bullet works fine for me, also the latter one... but you are right with the second one: the wire solution of the original 8421 works better but can obviously not be applied... therefore... I disassembled this model quickly after building it and reverted it back to the "normal" 8421, keeping the double pneumatics ... i have also rebuild to the original 8421 keeping the double pneumatic cause of its much better performance and also look...like Juergen has described above... afol1969 Posted July 22, 2013 Posted July 22, 2013 I've buit the 8421xl, and it works fine. But I found there is some space for modifications to optimize. It's true that the chain breaks easily, it's to notice to take a supplementary chain link to have enough space for the driving. In next time I'll try to motorize it (driving/steering) I'd bought the 8421 and extra parts from bricklink. Later I'll built the 42009 too to find the Pro's and Con's, maybe I can combine the 8421xl with the 42009. Quote
twoofive Posted August 19, 2013 Posted August 19, 2013 i do not own the 8421, i would want to, but it didnt cross my path yet;-) but i have modded/mocced my 42009 into a xl version, with seven axles, lengthened boom and more. maybe it fits in here? here is the bs link;-) http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=532990 Quote
