Alternate Palace Cinema Movie Posters

Seeing as it is my holiday, I finally have some time to spend on Lego once again. Ever since seeing the Palace Cinema I envisioned making some alternate movie posters. Nothing huge ofcourse, compared to making your own modular building, but something nice to spend time on. There are many very nice lego movie posters around already, and I took the liberty to use them for good purposes! Sadly I am not yet able to show them to you in use at the Palace Cinema, since my wife will not let me unwrap my present until my birthday on august 16th...

I've tried out several ways of printing the posters. The most easy way would be on normal blank paper etikets, but that didn't seem to work for me. So I bought some transparent etiket paper and printed the posters on those, which gives a very interesting effect. The posters are clearly visible, yet the interior of the cinema will also stay visible, leaving more room for light in the process!

Ofcourse these are not the only posters I've used. Here are the other posters which I will put on the glass windows, possible incorporating them into the set in the near future!

Yes, after seeing how they worked out, I immediatly started thinking on how to put this to good use. Backlighting them is one idea, but I can imagine there are many more ways of using this transparent poster (or whatever you'd want to use it for) sticker paper... Hope to have more ideas in the near future!

These are just outstanding! I really like the E.T., Star Wars and Indiana Jones posters, Maybe it is because I liked the movies better than PoTC. The Aliens and Harry Potter are also quite nice. I can't quite make out what he one just to the right of Harry Potter is, what uis it?

Was this purley a graphics exercise? Or did you build vignettes, then photo rearrange for he posters? Or just how? You have really peaked my curosity just how it was acomplished. No matter how, I also am looking forward to seeing them on your Palace Cinema.

what materials did you use to print the posters and what size did you print them at? are they stickers or are they removeable and switchable? i just got around to building my palace cinema last week and left it un-stickered so far. i have some posters lying around that i made especially for this, but until now, haven't gotten around to actually putting them on the set... after seeing your post i am inspired to do so..

I've been wanting to redo my sticker sheets from my sets onto re-useable sticker sheets so that they don't break apart on my bricks and ruin them. However I have no idea what to use as I want them to be translucent rather than white based backgrounds.

Cool! I had been thinking about doing the same thing myself, but I wanted to redesign the posters to have a limited color palette and larger "blocks" of color, so that they would go better with the ones from the set.

Hi Andy D! Thanks for your reply. The poster next to Harry Potter is from the movie I Am Legend (Will Smith). Someone made a nice Lego variant of this movie poster.

As I said in the first post, I used some of the many excellent Lego movie posters which are already around. Again, all credit goes to those designers! I just edited them in such a way the color contrast comes out perfectly on the used paper, and resized them so they would fit (though not perfectly) on the lego window. If I wanted them to fit perfectly some cropping had to be done, so I chose to cut some paper of the sides.

As said, the paper used for this is Herma No. 8964 Transparent Labels. I cannot yet give any indication about how long these stickers can be reused and whether or not they will eventually break apart (since it is my first try as well), but I applied some stickers and was able to get them on and off the window for over 10 times without losing quality of the sticker (or its stickyness... )!

That sounds like a really interesting idea! I love how the original stickers of Palace Cinema have that so called limited palette. I'd be really interested to see how yours works out! I'm thinking of building my own modular video store where I can use the other posters!

The paper used for this is Herma No. 8964 Transparent Labels (I don't think these are made to be re-usable). I used an ordinary HP Photosmart printer. I printed them at the size of the window, being 5.3 cm x 2.9 cm. The nice thing is you can buy enough windows for dozens of posters, seeing as the windows don't cost much and are easily replaced by one another!

Absolutely; I'm thinking of bus stops or trains platforms, particularly the bus stop in 8404 Public Transport. Or maybe some advertising columns, using these parts.

hey, thanks for the inspiration, motivation and measurements. i have finally gotten around to putting my custom posters on my cinema! i did not want to open a new thread, so i hope you don't mind me sharing it here (:

i have found with precision cutting, i was able to fit the posters between the slightly recessed part of the frame and push the window piece over it, keeping the poster in place. they are fairly easy to swap without dismantling the structure by pushing out the window piece and fitting the poster in. i have used normal a4 paper for this test-fit, but will consider using something with a more glossy finish in the future.

for the curious: i shoot, retouch and layout the photos by myself, hence my choice of movies depends on my limited inventory of parts. i try to make more recognizable and iconic movies, but it will all depend on what i have available to me at the time. i plan to do more posters in the future and will update if i have. suggestions are welcome (:

They look fantastic. I did similar for my custom modified 10182 cinema but not with the transparent stickers. When I bought the sticker sheet the transparent one was so much more expensive I couldn't quite justify spending the extra dough! But yours look great!!!

Don't worry about the stickers, they are easily removed! ;)

I hadn't even thought about the billboard, but now I am! Even more so, I can see myself creating a little scene of one of the movies for the big screen!

Wow! I'm really impressed on your custom posters (all of you).

It gave me an idea, mayby the same idea could be used on posters at an ex. busstop. You know these big signs, where you have a citymap on one side and a poster on the other.

These are lovely. My own purism won't allow me to use custom stickers on my own LEGO models, even if I think they'd look great, but I can't say I don't think about this sort of thing.

Actually, I'd long hoped TLG itself would issue some alternative poster stickers for its theaters; I'd even hoped for a theater set (before Palace Cinema was announced) that might actually use some of the "LEGO-ized" poster images we've seen over the years promoting one licensed theme or another. There have been some wonderful ones, certainly.
