Johan the Yellowhead Posted July 22, 2013 Author Posted July 22, 2013 (edited) Today, I had a nice surprise. My wife saw me working on the posters all day yesterday and decided since it was my holiday, I could have my birthday gift a little early! So today, we build the Palace Cinema together (on a hot steamy 30 degrees celsius day) and ofcourse I immediatly tried out my stickers! Interesting effect. When the top floor is disconnected and an abundance of natural light flows in, the effect I wished to achieve with the transparent stickers works out wonderfully. You can clearly see the posters, yet the inside of the building is also vaguely visible. The effect is hard to catch on camera, but in real life it looks really sweet! See the happy visitor! But... When the building is stacked, the effect is less clearly visible. One probably needs some artificial light from within the building to extent the effect, and even then I am not sure whether this will work or not. Sadly, I did not have the equipment necessary for this at hand. Here are the pictures. Though slightly visible, yet much less clear... So, I leave the decision up to you lot. I think I might keep it the way it is, but I am also going to make some posters on white sticker sheets, just to see how they work out! Hope you enjoyed this little quest! TheLegoDr Posted July 23, 2013 Posted July 23, 2013 I like the idea of alternate movie posters and these look great. At first I thought I liked the transparent appearance, but I think I'd prefer a more solid poster to give a better detailed appearance on the exterior. It looks too dark with no interior light coming out. But it does look good without the upper floor. Anyway, keep up the great work! Looking good! I will do this sometime. Quote
Wodanis Posted July 23, 2013 Posted July 23, 2013 (edited) I actually like the translucent effect. I've been trying to find that material to make stickers with like that. If Johan used LED lights inside it would look fantastic! Either way one could make both types of stickers for 'daylight' and 'evening' screenings. Edited July 23, 2013 by Wodanis Quote
eurotrash Posted July 23, 2013 Posted July 23, 2013 Looking good! I think with some interior LEDs these could look spectacular. Congratulations. Quote
ScotNick Posted July 23, 2013 Posted July 23, 2013 They really look great, but you need a "The Lego Movie" poster! :) Quote

Could always cut a plain piece of paper out & place it on the rear side of the window element. This will eliminate the transparency & darkness when the roof is on & depending on thickness will still allow some light through if required Quote
timmyc1983 Posted July 24, 2013 Posted July 24, 2013 in the lego world, 'the lego movie' would just be 'the movie' HAHAHAHAHA!! That's very true! Anyway, *ahem* um the posters look great!! I do tend to agree with the Lego Dr tho, they look great with the light coming in but not quite as good when the building is stacked. I think the plain white posters will look fantastic though! And I also think if you managed to light the inside of the cinema the transparent posters would look sensational!! Either way, great job with them and I look forward to updates :D happy building! Kristel Posted July 24, 2013 Posted July 24, 2013 The alternative posters looks great, but I think I prefer the solid colour stickers. Quote

Blondie-Wan Posted September 1, 2013 Posted September 1, 2013 They really look great, but you need a "The Lego Movie" poster! :) As it happens, I just today received the Fall 2013 Catalog (with the 10236 Ewok Village on the cover), and on page 23 it has the Palace Cinema, with a new little blurb that wasn't there in previous listings of the set - "Includes exclusive The LEGO Movie sticker, for a limited time only!" I hope there's a way those of us who already have the set can get this. My girlfriend, bless her, gave me 10232 for my birthday back in June, and I'm absolutely thrilled to have it (and to have such a wonderful and generous girlfriend) but I'd hate to miss out on the sticker... LEGO Historian Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 Well sooner or later you'll need to update your Palace Cinema Poster collection with what may be the ultimate movie.... Living in metro Detroit, I will have a front row seat watching the filming of this movie in 2014... Most people don't think of Detroit as Gotham City or Metropolis... but when it comes to great architecture of the Roaring 20's... we're blessed to have some of the best on the planet..... http://www.flickr.com/search/?q=Guardian%20Building%20Detroit http://www.flickr.com/search/?q=Fisher+Building+lobby+Detroit http://www.flickr.com/search/?q=Fox%20Theatre%20Detroit%20Auditorium Quote

But as it happens, The LEGO Movie itself will have multiple DC Comics superheroes, including both Superman and Batman - their minifigure versions, at least! - so it's the "DC Comics movie team-up" I'm most looking forward to anyway. Thanks for the links to those pictures. You do have some gorgeous buildings there. Quote
pinioncorp Posted September 8, 2013 Posted September 8, 2013 Most people don't think of Detroit as Gotham City or Metropolis... Detroit is weird. I know it's in a dire financial situation after the downfall of the auto industry but the fact that so many giant swathes of land are unoccupied amidst the skyscrapers astounds me. Surely the land itself is worth more than a carpark? But do check out Jim Garrett's wonderful Detroit architecture. Some of the best Lego skyscrapers I've ever seen. But back on topic, has anyone tried a Type 1 door frame, with a clear glass pane in the front and a white pane in the back? Quote
LEGO Historian Posted September 12, 2013 Posted September 12, 2013 The first image is where the billionaire owner plans to build a new hockey arena for the Detroit Red Wings hockey team... and a $650 million entertainment district. He alread bought up most of the land... https://maps.google.com/maps/ms?msid=208907661714252216854.00045daba4cad6b6d28a2&msa=0 The 3rd image is of the Michigan Central Station, where the last train left in 1988. This behemoth is 3 miles from downtown, making redevelopment difficult... but the current billionaire owner has started a slow restoration with a new roof, and started putting new windows in. This is the 2nd largest train station in the USA, after Grand Central Station in New York. This "Gotham City" sized structure is 100 years old (1913), and was the worlds tallest train station when it was completed. Here is an image from before the restoration work began... it is a gigantic, almost terrifying work... (several of the transformers movies were filmed here).... Quote
