I think my wife already knows, without my telling her, and it's better/cheaper than my other hobbies: roller coasters and saltwater aquariums!

And it's not life threatening or messy if it falls apart

I got my Girlfriend hooked by doing two things:

Buying all the Marvel sets and letting her build them (we're both Marvel comic fan's and she loves the mini fig's of Iron Man, being her favourite hero)

Letting her help me build and sharing the hobby with her, customizing mini figs, building cars, furnishing Creator Houses, having huge Police Chases and smashing up my City over a bottle of wine etc.

Please let us all know how it went, and good luck.

Still loving all this advice! Keep it coming. At this point she now helps me feel CMF bags and when we get to Walmart she plans on a stopover at the Lego aisle. The other day we just went straight there before I mentioned it which I took as a good sign:)

Well, if there was any doubt, I erased it yesterday when my wife got home from work she saw the lego Eiffel Tower spread out all over the kitchen it all of its magnificent 3000+ piece count. Since I sold our boat, don't smoke, don't play golf and don't have a mistress, I guess she finds it a tolerable vice. Of course, she didn't ask how much the Eiffel Tower cost. It was cheaper than a boat, but a lot more than some of the other vices would have cost. Thank goodness I'm out of retired Lego sets that I feel the need to buy.

Well folks this story has a happy ending! She picked out a Friends set today, built it, and then customized it to look like us

Have a look! I'm having trouble posting images with this new Flickr but here's the link...

So glad to hear it has a happy ending! Mind you, if she loves you, was this outcome ever really in doubt?

Awesome!

Hi

I think this is an appropriate topic to post this...

My mom never liked that I spent so much on Lego and is visiting my appartment next week.

She always nags I've got more than enough Lego and that I don't need to buy anymore. (I'm in my 30s and haven't lived with my parents since I was 19, BTW)

Now my parents haven't visited my appartment in a year so obviously I bought tons of sets since then (LOTR, The Hobbit), all displayed proudly in my room. To put you in context, I never owned any castle sets before, or sets with so many gray and black bricks. (I was collecting Technic/City mostly)

I've come up with a counter argument for the conversation that I expect is gonna happen.

NOTE: Obviously the boxes have to be either hidden or thrown out.

Mom: You bought all these Lego sets?

Me: Oh those? I built them with instructions downloaded from the Lego site. (LIE)

Mom: With the Lego you already own?

Me: Yup

Outcome 1:

Mom: Don't lie, you don't have anything remotely like those.

Me: Ok I admit, sorry, I lied, they're all new sets. But I really wanted to build those awesome LOTR models YOU just admitted I NEEDED to buy new bricks to do so, unable to do the same with the bricks from my existing collection!

Outcome 2:

Mom: Oh, I see.

(As long as she never sees the boxes or instructions you're fine)

SheepEater. I think it would be helpful if we knew the reason of why you came up with these counter-arguments. Are you afraid she'll disapprove? To be honest, if she never liked the hobby anyways, no amount of lying OR honesty would help. I think, you're30 years old, a big boy, if she gives you any crap just say that's what you enjoy and it's not her business.

Trying to hide the boxes and explain to her "you told me to do this and I needed it for my collection" seems almost childish. You're an adult, I'd just be proud of it.

.. the problem is that I still use their house to store 75% of my collection. :sceptic:

Oh. Well, maybe you really try being kind and confident about it? I'm not sure then.

To be fair, it's not your mom's business what you do with your money as long as you're not unreasonable and spend more than you have. Your hobby isn't her business.

And besides, you don't waste the money on cigarettes or other things that damage your health.

From what you are telling us... it's your wife that is trying to explain you she's an AFOL ;)

When I came out of my Dark Ages I thought I could easily involve my son, although he was only 1.

I showed her it can be an investment sometimes. When she saw the prices that people gave for some sets she was convinced I didn't spend the money on 'just toys'.

She accepted that at times I'm in the attic for hours.

Nevertheless I asked her not to use the phrase 'playing with LEGO'. It's 'building' my dear :)

Good luck with that. My wife will never stop saying that I'm "playing with my Legos". I don't mind though - when she gets on my nerves I tell her, "you need to go play with your beads". (She makes beautiful beaded jewelry).

The nice thing is, almost everyone has their own hobby, wether it be playing with Lego or playing sports, we all need a little "play time".
