MrNumbskull13 Posted July 24, 2013 Posted July 24, 2013 (edited) Hey everyone, a couple of days ago I decided to start building a Unimog! After seing all the Unimog MOCs that other people have made I felt inspired and started to build one! I started this thread to document my creation an upload WIP photos, so I hope you enjoy reading about my project. The first day I had to finish dismanteling my Toyota Hilux Rock Crawler and a small RC Bugy I had made. I find it a lot easier to start building when I have all my parts in front of me! [note: that isn't all my parts, I have some pannels and suspension and stuff in another small bag ] After a couple of days building I managed to almost finish the axles and start building the chassis! So far it's going pretty good! ATM the gearing is 1:8.337 (is that too low? ). The only thing troubling me is how to incorporate a steering system on that front axle. So I'm off to try and think up a solution for the steering on LDD. Thanks for reading and I will post more pics soon! Edited July 24, 2013 by MrNumbskull13 Quote
timslegos Posted July 24, 2013 Posted July 24, 2013 Are you building according to the official Unimog set, or your own version? The chassis looks nice so far. tim Quote
MrNumbskull13 Posted July 24, 2013 Author Posted July 24, 2013 (edited) Thanks! I'm building my own version, more trial truck style unlike the 8110 which isn't RC and has attachable equipment. :) Edited July 24, 2013 by MrNumbskull13 Quote
z3_2drive Posted July 24, 2013 Posted July 24, 2013 (edited) depends...what motors are you going to use and how many? with buggy motors the ratio might be too high and with xl motors it's good as is. Edited July 24, 2013 by z3_2drive Quote

I only have one XL motor and one M motor, I'll be using the XL for drive and M for steering. :) Quote
rchan016 Posted July 25, 2013 Posted July 25, 2013 Steering ideas: There's a new 8 tooth sliding gear in the 420009 crane; If you use that with the steering rack, you could have the steering shaft change angles (with a CV joint or similar) and still have steering. Quote
The Ghost Racer Posted July 25, 2013 Posted July 25, 2013 (edited) I advise you to use the portal hubs of the 8110, in a trial truck the axles 5.5 are likely to end up badly twisting on themselves since the torque generated by an xl motor. Edited July 25, 2013 by The Ghost Racer Quote
MrNumbskull13 Posted July 25, 2013 Author Posted July 25, 2013 Ok everyone, after many tries I came up with a solution for the steering: http://m.flickr.com/#/photos/92293857@N05/9365492324/ I advise you to use the portal hubs of the 8110, in a trial truck the axles 5.5 are likely to end up badly twisting on themselves since the torque generated by an xl motor. Hmm, I don't have portal hubs from the 8110/9398 so I can't use them but luckily I'm not using any 5.5L axles. ':P I have twisted one before though in one of my first trial trucks, I managed to twist it back though. xD Quote

Junpei Posted July 25, 2013 Posted July 25, 2013 I think the steering not having Ackermann geometry might be a problem, I'm not sure how much of a problem tho. Quote

Nah, my one had a steering very similar to this and it had just a little problem of torque because I used an m motor for it. Edited July 25, 2013 by The Ghost Racer Quote

I have never used proper Ackerman geometry and all my truck's steering has been fine, I thought about it but since there was a lack of space I had to leave it out. Quote
MrNumbskull13 Posted July 26, 2013 Author Posted July 26, 2013 I was wondering, what kind of cab should I make since I'm making a more trial truck style Unimog? I'm thinking either u1700 or a u4000 cab, what do you think? Quote
The Ghost Racer Posted July 26, 2013 Posted July 26, 2013 Unimog U4000 seems more like a military truck (and it is), so, I advise you to use this model for the design of the cab, to give it a look very powerful. Quote
MrNumbskull13 Posted July 27, 2013 Author Posted July 27, 2013 Thanks for the feedback but I think this project is gonna have to go on hold until I get the 4x4 Crawler or the Exclusive Edition Crawler :/ The wheels I'm using are getting out of proportion so when I get a crawler I shall use the 94.8 wheels from it... Stay tuned ;) Quote

I don't know if postage to you would make the reduction worth it though (not entirely sure what country you live in....), just a thought Quote
