nato8181 Posted July 28, 2013 Posted July 28, 2013 (edited) Hello my name is Renato and I'm an AFOL Brazilian, I was checking my parts inventory and realized that I have all the parts necessary for the creation of the Land Rover Sheepos however, been researching and I could see that Gearbox has some problems can be solved in parts. I wonder if someone has recreated this MOC and the corrections applied can solve this problem permanently. Of course I already have some experience with Models Originals and I know that even the Lego models have problems that can be corrected of course more is not always possible to fix and maintain the originality. My question is this, it is possible to fix Land Rover Defender and maintain the originality ? Thank you for your help! Edited July 28, 2013 by nato8181 Quote
Blakbird Posted July 28, 2013 Posted July 28, 2013 I think the words "correction" and "fixed" are a little misleading. There is nothing wrong with the gearbox, it is a technical marvel. However, anything so complicated can have some bugs in it. This comes more from the individual build and the variation in rubber bands than the design itself. There is nothing that can be done to the design to make it any better, you just have to experiment with different numbers of rubber bands once you get it built. Quote
Ralf Posted October 3, 2013 Posted October 3, 2013 (edited) One tip of my side, if you have very complexed gearboxes it´s useful to spray all working parts with clear dry teflon. (but not to much only a thin film!) With this method i had never problems with the function in the past. P.S. The Defender 110 from Sheepo is my next project, i´m impressed of this car! jantjeuh Posted October 3, 2013 Posted October 3, 2013 (edited) I think you're better off using silicon spray than teflon spray on Lego parts. In any case, don't use WD40 as it practically melts ABS. Edited October 3, 2013 by jantjeuh Quote
Ralf Posted October 4, 2013 Posted October 4, 2013 (edited) Yes you can use silicon spray but this is like glue and all the dirt, soil and fluffs adhere to the parts. I have used silicon also before, but with the teflon all my parts are free of dirt and fluffs because it is drying. If the parts are a little dirty after running outside i clean it with a little compressed air and all looks like new. Further i don´t spray it thick to the whole parts only some drops at every moving parts. I use a injection needle and so i can dose it very exactly. (Peviously i spray a little teflon from the spray can in a small cup and suck up with the injection) Removing of the teflon is no problem i clean the parts with a little bit of alcohol. Ralf Posted October 18, 2013 Posted October 18, 2013 So, now i have the most parts together but some parts are nearly impossible to find. Does anyone know where i can find the "Light bluish grey Axle and pin connector angle 4"??? I think this part is very rare and i found it only in USA and some other countrys, but not in europe. I have 2 pieces but need 2 pieces more. If i don´t find them i still begin to build, the parts are only for the body. Quote

The good news is that they are completely hidden underneath the access compartment that opens beneath the rear seat. If you use black parts instead, no one will ever know. Or you could even use old light gray. Quote
Junpei Posted October 18, 2013 Posted October 18, 2013 You could just use toothed toggle joints, it wouldn't be LBG but it would be light grey. Quote

I haven't built this MOC yet, but according to Bricklink I now have 99,9% of the parts. Only missing the LBG 3x3 dishes, which are very rare. Might just replace them with metallic silver ones, a Blakbird suggested. Edited October 19, 2013 by jantjeuh Quote
Paul Boratko Posted October 19, 2013 Posted October 19, 2013 My wife just sold four of the LBG #4 connectors to someone from Australia today... Quote
Ralf Posted October 19, 2013 Posted October 19, 2013 (edited) I think to use the toothed toggle joints is a very good idea, i have hundreds of them in light grey. Or i use the angle 4 connectors in black it is also still in stock. The LBG 2x2 dishes are not my problem i have ordered them from the Netherlands for 2 cent per piece, i think everyone has problems to order some parts but allways others. For me it was difficult to find the right rubbers (3x3 and 4x4) the most imortant parts for a perfect working gear. If someone need the LBG 2x2 dishes: http://www.bricklink.com/store.asp?p=MijnBouwsteenNL&itemID=35951127 Edited October 19, 2013 by Ralf Quote
Junpei Posted October 19, 2013 Posted October 19, 2013 I think you can get some of the rubber bands you're looking for from the lego education website. Can someone tell give me the BL link to 2x2 dishes? I'm not sure what part you're talking about. Quote
Ralf Posted October 19, 2013 Posted October 19, 2013 But now i´ve ordered 1,5mm silicone string 30 shore, so i can create my own rubber bands i need. Quote

Whoops, I meant the LBG 3x3 inverted dishes. 2x2 are very common. Here's a BL link: http://www.bricklink...tem.asp?P=43898 They're probably rare because they are used in SW sets. Same goes for the LBG levers... damn that 10179. Edited October 19, 2013 by jantjeuh Quote
Ralf Posted October 19, 2013 Posted October 19, 2013 Ahh, yes you are right, i have also only 3 pcs LBG of them and the clear dishes are also rare. Quote
jantjeuh Posted October 19, 2013 Posted October 19, 2013 They're too expensive, so I will use metallic silver ones instead. Apparently that looks better as well. Quote
Ralf Posted October 19, 2013 Posted October 19, 2013 (edited) Yes the price is to high, now i have ordered the clear dishes for 67 cent per piece and one ir receiver for 15€ but also this is really to much for two dishes. But i don´t understand why the XL motors are so expensive on bricklink 20€ up to 28€. At the original LEGO shop i can buy them for 11,99€ per piece and thats what i ever do,i buy the motors at the original LEGO shop. Further i have tested the flashing LEDs, it looks like great if i use them at the servo motor drive right/left and flashing right /left very nice. P.S. Has anyone used the servo motor in the Defender? I have two of them and now i want to build one in the Defender! I think it is a better "steering feeling" like the standard M Motor. (automatically middle position) Edited October 19, 2013 by Ralf Quote
Ralf Posted October 20, 2013 Posted October 20, 2013 Today i begin to build the Defender, the front axle. I can only say, congratutation for this fantastic car and manual! I love this difficult technic sets and this is really high end........ Quote
jantjeuh Posted October 20, 2013 Posted October 20, 2013 Good luck! It's also on my to-build list, but I have a lot of MOCs I need to build first ;) Quote
Ralf Posted October 20, 2013 Posted October 20, 2013 (edited) Thanks, and if i´ve changed the gearing at the steering, suitable for the servo motor i´ll upload the pics here. In this car i want to have a servo motor with middle position Edited October 20, 2013 by Ralf Quote
jantjeuh Posted October 20, 2013 Posted October 20, 2013 Cool, let us know if it worked! I think it's strong enough. Quote
Ralf Posted October 21, 2013 Posted October 21, 2013 Yes i do, but at first i have to build the steering original and then i have a look if it is enough space for the servo motor. But i think it is possible and the drivetrain from the servo motor i want to realise with a Lego chain, an easy and effective way. The advantage of the chain is you have very small backlash at the drivetrain. And it is much more easyer to find the right gearing for the steering (i have only two times 90 degrees). Quote
Ralf Posted October 22, 2013 Posted October 22, 2013 Today i have finished the drive train......... what a complex part, you need three hands sometimes. But it is working great. http://bricksafe.com/files/Ralf/IMG_0251%5B1%5D.JPG/800x600.jpg Quote
Jim Posted October 24, 2013 Posted October 24, 2013 The model is still in the running for Cussoo. In case you missed the Frontpage post. Latest Cuusoo decision Skip to the end if you're not interested in the other models. Quote
Alasdair Ryan Posted October 24, 2013 Posted October 24, 2013 Skip to the end if you're not interested in the other models. But what if you don't like 4x4's? No really if lego do make this set it would be one of the best technic set ever. Although I get the feeling they would remove the gearbox because it is not up to standards that official technic sets have. Quote
