Looks pretty good though, I'll get it sooner or later. I'm doing a MOC with the 42006 and mashing it into something like this

I got most of the sets I longed for .. just missing that darn shuttle

In fact absolutely none, I can make me any anytime.

Pretty cool that you can MOC yourself out of Technic bits .. mind showing us a MOC?

Upon reflection, probably the 8479-1 barcode truck though when I was a kid the 8462 blue tow truck looked longer to me

so back in the day the one I wanted most was the tow truck.

However today there is lots more that id rather have my number one would probably be either the Williams F1, boss crawler, or the 8070 x1 / 8157 x2 just for the wishbones, I wish I had 2 buggy motors too which come from some technic sets.

Who knows, maybe one day ill get them.

Note that the artwork in the lego products catalog for the tow truck looked so cool too and I cant seem to find it now, this probably helped make it to my number 1.

For me its 8258. But I hope to have enough of the right parts to build it soon. I don't plan on missing out any more. I'm getting 42008 one way or another this year.

So while browsing around tonight, I came upon the 8109 flatbed tow truck. When this model was introduced, I was really fascinated by the flatbed mechanism and told myself I need to get this. I saw this at TRU many times and it was on S@H for a while. But for some reason, I never got around to picking it up due to work and other obligations. And now that I have a little time to get back into Technic building, it's no longer available at retail outlets. I need to either pay double the MSRP price to the scalpers for a new set, or I'll have to fight with other AFOL for a used set on auction sites. Sigh... so stressful. I should've gotten it when I had the chance. Would look amazing next to the new 42008.

So what's that one set that you really wanted but missed the chance to get it when it was new? I wanna hear it!

Why not build it with spare parts. There's nothing "rare" in it.

8466. Just the images of that set brought me out of my dark ages. Someday maybe......

For me, oddly, it was 8446. This one:

I wanted it because it was green, and I kind of liked the futuristic look (alongside 8462, which I got). Looking back on it now, I'm actually glad I didn't get it, because they changed the grays and I would have had the old gray parts I wouldn't use anymore. Also it doesn't have much to it except the green parts.

I can also remember I always wanted 8880, but I finally got it in the end. :D

One other set that intrigued me was 8865, the test car, but that was only after 8880 out of curiosity. I solved that by borrowing the instructions from someone and build most of it from that. :)

I believe that was it :)

Well... I came back from my dark ages in 2011 so I can only show you 15 MOCs and a few more unfinished, if you look my brickshelf gallery you can see them, I hope you like.

I'm the type of LEGO fan who builds every set based strictly on the manual, including the stickers. I don't break apart my models for mocs or to create other models, so I don't have any "spare" parts waiting around to build the tow truck. Buying all the pieces separately through bricklink is way too much trouble. I'll just hunt around and see if I'm lucky enough to actually get at least an used set.

Understood. I'm doing the same for 8466. Good luck!

I owned 8466 for a few days way back when before returning it due incorrect pieces in the box. I'd like to get another one someday.

8285, 8458, 8461, 8674 and 8421 are all sets I would love in my collection.

8258, 8880, 8872 and space shuttle for me. I am slowly buying up all the sets i have missed but it takes time and some of them are ridiculous expensive :(

Personally I don't view the space shuttle as a set worth to own. I had it once, but to me it was a boring model, and additionally I've never been fond of studded beams.

The only opinion I have about it is boring and ugly. But that's me.

Grew up with the studded sets so they have a special link to me :) The alternate model for the space shuttle is very cool.

8455...Tons of pneumatics! Too bad it costs like 300$ on eBay right now..

Saw one opened with sealed packets on gumtree a few days ago for £30, didn't trust it tho, sounded to good off a deal. :/

I don't regret anything yet. It's still early and I just came out of my darkages a few months ago... I got all the parts I need to build crawlers and offroaders from buying multiples of 9398s, 8081s for panels, 9395s, and a 8110 and a 8297. Most are still fairly easy to obtain. I even butchered a used 8466 for parts (mostly for the tires) so I'm fairly satisfied for now. Tracked and construction vehicles don't interest me yet, but will cross that bridge when/if I get there.

But you must admit that it was (and would be - in case of reedition) fresh and unique - among tones of trucks, cranes and excavators.

Anything that isn't a Truck, Crane or Excavator/Front-loader would be unique among Technic sets...

Back on topic:

There are only three set I don't have in my collection that I (might) still want:

8862 but that's not really a set I missed out on. (As I was only two years old back then.)

8462 11 years old and not interested in Technic as far as I can remember, And even if I wanted it I/My Parents/Grandparents/Other relatives couldn't afford it (as a gift) anyways. And while 8862 appeals to me, 8462 doesn't and would only be added to my collection because its the only Flagship I don't have yet.

And 8053 which I could have gotten but never did. Because it's just not that appealing to me, I like the Alternate model but that's about it. Can't get it new anymore at a reasonable price (Less then €90,- including shipping), And the second hand market is something I keep an eye on but it's still a set that I don't really need. (I would probably only buy it so that I have all recent Technic Cranes in my collection)

I came out of my dark ages in 2005/2006 (Not really sure) because of 8436, Later on getting 8455 and 8421 sealed the deal and turned me into a Technic (and Creator) set collector (With some Model Team and Star Wars UCS sets too). And this year I've finally started MOC'ing. (With Creator sets.)

Well, if they decided to relaunch it in a studless version, I agree it would be fresh. And likely much better by looks, in my opinion.

My main problem with the old one was all the studded parts, which IMO made it look worse than it could have been.

Finally managed to track down an 8288 for £28 from ebay, should arrive shortly. I have no idea why I wanted it in my dark ages, but looking forward to it. Also set 744 was a massive want, I lusted after it for a year - I think for the trans dark blue windscreen on the truck, it just looked so cool [but when you're ten a massive yellow truck with a huge dish on top is cool anyway].

£28 for the 8288? That must be the deal of a lifetime! Can never find that set at a reasonable price and if i do they don't send to Norway as some people seem to think we are still barbaric vikings or something.

You're NOT Vikings? I never knew....

We don't run around with leather and fur clothes and horned helmets chasing other people with axes and swords

Yeah, I always look at ebay as newly listed BIN only whenever I can, it had only been listed for three minutes! Deal of the year so far!

According to Amon Amarth you do!

Gotta love that Viking metal.
