afol1969 Posted April 22, 2014 Posted April 22, 2014 (edited) Anyone up to the challenge of converting it to CAD instructions? Yes But it needed hours to make the LFX file in instruction mode, there are more than 1400 steps . So at first I have to see if the steps are more or less in a right order to make a CAD file. Importing the file to LDRAW is not a solution because the are always a lot of parts missing in the CAD file. So while making the instructions I have to build it - and hope to have all the needed parts. Maybe it would help if I can have the CAD file from Jurgens' Ultimate 42009, from the boom the instructions are already available. But maybe there is another volunteer to make a complete CAD file that I can step. Greetings Alex Edited June 15, 2014 by afol1969 Quote
SNIPE Posted April 22, 2014 Posted April 22, 2014 Thanks very much for the LXF file Gerger, I have played around with it now and made the mechanisms a bit better and simpler, also some gears were not meshed fully, fixed that. LARGE photo Here is the LXF file: http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/finneykris/mfr/chassis.lxf Regards, Snipe Quote
gerger Posted April 23, 2014 Posted April 23, 2014 Thanks ALL for your appreciation!! I love the front cabin the most too and everything start from that as well. For those who have the ultimate 42009, it will be relatively easier to mount this yellow panel cabin into the ultimate 42009 chassis, double the front axle and it will become another gmk6400 mod. I can give it a try if another one can send me a lxf file of the ultimate 42009. Thanks for the kind offer, Alex Too bad that I'm not familiar with Ldraw, mainly due to the fact that it lack DirectX or OpenGL support such that it's not very responsive to camera orbit and refresh every time the camera move (that's quite important during the design process to review the appearance) I have some progress images just to record the module add on and see if it's helpful. Snipe, a clever update that I missed, good job Quote

Because after a first impression of your LFX file: Where shall I start from? The easiest way will be if you can make photo instructions, so at least I can follow a right step order. Otherwise it will be a horrible work where I don't know how to have the motivation and - the important - the time. Once you dismantle the crane, make photos from each step, and I'm sure that I'm able to make the instructions with LDR. Greetings Alex Quote
jantjeuh Posted April 23, 2014 Posted April 23, 2014 That's a gorgeous looking crane. Deserves its own topic IMO! Quote

Once you dismantle the crane, make photos from each step, and I'm sure that I'm able to make the instructions with LDR. i would second this... a carefully done photo sequence could already be enough and sufficiant to build your gorgeous crane... there are some MOCS out there where the BI is "just" a photo sequence (e.g. some models of Madocca) - for an experienced builder they should the job... But making professional and well stepped lego like BI just from a lxf file is indeed a horrible and too much time consuming job - this is already a fact for much much simpler models ... at least IMHO... to make a long story short: it would be great if you could make such a photo sequence when tearing apart your monster... many many thanks already in advance! gerger Posted April 24, 2014 Posted April 24, 2014 Making photo sequence as good as Madocca will be very challenging, I can give it a try this weekend by taking pictures when dismantle the crane. Quote
afol1969 Posted April 24, 2014 Posted April 24, 2014 The best way: you make for each dismantling step a photo to the ending step, then you make the photo sequence from backwards to forward. So we will have the building sequence. Greetings Alex Quote

If we both weren't on opposite sides of the planet, I'd come over to your house to help you, please do continue. I'm one of many here on EB looking forward to any kind of BI. Quote

Cannot wait to see 42009, u42009 and the new MOC on the same floor. Quote
corellian_egr Posted April 30, 2014 Posted April 30, 2014 This is a stunning work of genius and a perfect example of what I call evolutionary building. First came the lego version of the MarkII crane, then came the gorgeous ultimate version, and finally this exquisite, beautiful version. I would take a third job to pay for the parts for this version. Is there a possibility that the instructions could placed on the rebrickable site in order to give the widest exposure to this breathtaking creation? Can't wait to build it. It is a creation of surpassing beauty. Kudos to this genius! Quote
lcaa Posted May 8, 2014 Posted May 8, 2014 (edited) Hi! I have a problem at page 209 (372), step 23 of Jurgens Instructions:the yellow pin connector round with slot is hitting/ touching the 24 T gear...so it can not turn freely... Any ideas? Many thanks! Edited May 8, 2014 by lcaa Quote
DanFraser Posted May 8, 2014 Posted May 8, 2014 That section you're adding on will be built incorrectly somewhere. Rewind and try that group again because it shouldn't be making contact with the gear. Quote

Alasdair Ryan Posted May 10, 2014 Posted May 10, 2014 Great crane, much better than the original. Quote
Saberwing40k Posted May 11, 2014 Posted May 11, 2014 I've made a rendering of Gerger's crane in the colors of Thoemen, anyone want to see it? Quote
Tommy Styrvoky Posted May 11, 2014 Posted May 11, 2014 any idea if it would be possible to have the small linear actuators be able to deploy by themselves ( without you having to use the drive ring on the right side ? Quote

Kumbbl Posted May 13, 2014 Posted May 13, 2014 wow - what does this mean - is this a stepped file?? Quote
neoconagenda Posted June 12, 2014 Posted June 12, 2014 I have been a silent observer on this site for a bit now, mostly relating to SW UCS sets. While static sets are nice to look at I must admit that the WOW factor of Technic sets (especially custom MOD's) is particularly addictive. I have parts in hand to build the Ultimate 8043 (Thanks to Jürgen’s vision and afol1969's pdf instructions) and will begin on that next week but I am already beginning the process of getting the parts for the 42009. I want to say thank you to every builder that has the vision and wherewithal to make my Lego world just a little bit better. I am always amazed at what you gents do and it is highly appreciated!!! Ember Posted June 12, 2014 Posted June 12, 2014 Did not saw many people creating a 6 axle version of this. Tried to do something on my own and so far i'm impressed by my doing. First time I do this without using someone elses instructions :) Expect for making it an ultimate. This is not the final version of the body. The engine block is a V12 (2 * 6), like the 8421XL. Needed to move the infrared receivers closer to the turret or I had to buy more extension cords for the motors. Had to think something to fill the gab under the engine block to make it more sturdy. All left is to create a longer boom. Not wanting to follow the XL boom that is already out but trying to create something that has the same look as the current one. Quote
grum64 Posted June 13, 2014 Posted June 13, 2014 I love seeing what all you incredibly talented people do to improve the functionality of Lego's 'standard' models. Personally I wouldn't know where to start with something so seemily complex as the 42009, I found it hard enough coming up with simple changes to my 8110. It was fun though and to me that's the main thing. I can only hope that by reading these pages, seeing & understanding the techniques used and putting them into practice, my building skills will improve. Quote
Eigenbroetler Posted June 14, 2014 Posted June 14, 2014 Update2: the LXFfile is here :) happy building!! As you can see with the file, the chassis is grouped into several modules and i simply save each group into a single file and swing the camera / hide bricks to follow. Yet the order of some pieces may need attention because they may be interlocking or blocking one other. that's the down side without instruction.. There are also some dummy pieces which LDD doesn't include. I group/color them together so that it should be very straight forward to replace with. One final words is that although the crane can drive and steer with all wheel independent suspension, the performance is average or less playful than I expect (mainly due to weight). I will prefer a more simple setup without independent suspension so that the drive can be faster and steering can be smooth. It's a good experience to understand the limits of PF so that my next project can be much better prepared. when i open the file it says that 12 pieces was removed from the model, anybody know what pieces that was removed?
