Endgame Posted September 18, 2013 Author Posted September 18, 2013 The Chief continues to sputter and rant as Arnold Keolo speaks. The archaelogist seems plenty shaken, his joints wobbling and his breath labored. "Arnold Keolo, at your service. I think we all have been having a fairly horrid day so far - You're the heroes Goldraum sent, correct? I was awaiting you in my manor, but those inky charlatans abducted me out of my own home and made me watcyh as they sucked this forest dry. It's revolting. I came to appreciate this place when i lived in taurost, and those bastard demons make me watch them drain it before knocking me out cold. Goldraum and I have a little bit of a deal... He pays me a sum of gold every year, and he gets to take some of the magical literature I manage to track down and get." Keolo shrugs. "I guess you'd call it a subscription. Although I personally would like to hold on to the documents, Goldraum keeps some of my expeditions afloat. So, heroes, the documents are yours. Do what you will, just make sur ethey get into Mr. Ziegfried's hands, aye? I think I saw the Chief wirting something additional on the back of them, though that shouldn't cause Goldraum to not want the damn stack of papers..." Quote
Kintobor Posted September 18, 2013 Posted September 18, 2013 "I'm not sure what to do with the documents actually. There's a reason those octo-eyed megablocks wanted it." Karie rifles through the documents. Quote
Endgame Posted September 18, 2013 Author Posted September 18, 2013 "I told you already, you despicable harlot - information supression!" The oculoid Chief snaps. Karie begins to read the documents, her eyes canning the thousands of years old text. the writing was ancient and archaic, translations - courtesy of Keolo - scrawled underneath the odd glyphs meandering around the pages. The with reads aloud, a dark sense of foreboding creeping over her with every sentence. It begins with a foreword wirrten on a seperate sheet of papyrus: Here are the documents, Goldraum. These were hard to get, and cost me the life of someone very near to me - so hopefully you find them an interesting read. I did, to say the very least, though I wouldn't bet my life on the document's being too exact about this "Lifespark"... -Keolo "The Lifespark is Mother Danab's greatest gift to her dear children... But also their ultimate undoing. As the centuries turned into millenniums, and millenniums into eons, one by one Mother Danab's children left her. Despite her pleading and protesting, before long, all of her children had abandoned the goddess. All but a few. These last few children of Danab sought to take advantage of their mother's immense grief, manipulating her to gain the power they so craved. In their sorrow, they asked for but one gift: The ability to create life of their own. Danab, in her grief and desperation to keep her remaining kin by her side, agreed to fulfill her children's request; but her power alone would not be enough to create such a potent object. Seeing the obvious pain the goddess was in, the rest of the pantheon agreed to help Mother Danab in forging the Lifespark. It all started with a single ember. Mercuito gave the spark his gift of cunning and desire for wealth, attributes that all living creatures have in one way or another; Ennoc added a sense of right and wrong, bestowing his gift upon the growing ember. Neron and Neredice ceased their feuding long enough to impart their knowledge of the seas to the spark; Sylvania, knowledge of nature. Centurus gave the spark and whatever was to be born from it the ability to adapt to the ever changing seasons. Together, Amedea and Melodion gave beauty to expanding flame. Fabula Sibylla imbued the powers of dreams and visions into the now large ember. Ethereth, in a dazzling blast of mutli-colored light, infused the power of ether into both the spark and whatever was created from it. Tarok gave the Spark the power of instinct, knowing blood must be shed for a species to thrive - and, despite their differences, Helvetia agreed to banish the chilling winds away from the flame, so that the Lifespark may burn eternally. With all of the gods' and goddesses' gifts bestowed upon the flame, Oleg tempered the Spark and the enormous power that dwelled within it - and, with his final touch, turned the small spark into a billowing pillar of fire. Thus, the Lifespark was born. Mother Danab soon presented the Lifespark to her offspring, her children by the gift. Experimentation with the mighty flame began almost instantly, the mortals trying to temper the flames of the Lifespark as soon as they received it. Joy turned to despair and disgust when the mortals realized that the flame was too powerful for them to control. Many were consumed and devoured by the inferno, unable to control the divine power infused into the flame. Now thinking of their blessing as a horrid curse, they blamed Mother Danab, saying that her gift was nothing more than a thinly veiled attempt to end their lives. Now disenchanted with their mother, the last of Danab's children abandoner her. In her rage she unleashed death, hunger, and sickness upon those who had abandoned her. In her fury she sealed the Lifespark away, locking it's power so her children may never see their gift ever again. Fury soon melted into despair as Mother Danab realized what horrors she had inflicted upon her children... And the Lifespark has remained hidden since that fateful day." There also appeared to be some ink makrings on the back of the last page... Quote
Kintobor Posted September 18, 2013 Posted September 18, 2013 "What the hell I'm I getting myself involved with..." Karie mutters to herself. Karie flips over to the back of the last page. Quote
Endgame Posted September 19, 2013 Author Posted September 19, 2013 (edited) The second passage is much shorter, and penned in an odd looking black plasm - Ink from an oculoid. It looks recent... It is likely that the Chief just recently wrote this. A massive citadel, dominating the horizon. Surrounded by hellish cold winds and freezing cold waters. Towers of darkness, dwarfing the sky and piercing the heavens. A master of death dwells the Citadel's corridors, commanding legions of the faceless. A Spark slumbers deep within, its blinding light being suffocated by the darkness surrounding it. From the Spark a being of life and death, light and dark shall be born - And thus the Eternal Reaper will spell the end of humanity. Edited September 19, 2013 by Endgame Quote
Kintobor Posted September 19, 2013 Posted September 19, 2013 Karie bites her lips. These Oculoids were messed up dudes. "Beautiful, just beautiful. A piece of gothic poetry to go along with the equally creepy ye olde documents." Karie turned to the party. "Well, we got one loose end to clear up." She says while pointing to the chief. Quote
K-Nut Posted September 19, 2013 Posted September 19, 2013 "H-how? How did you...? It isn't possible... How?! How did I lose?!" With the Chief wounded at their knees, the party knew that... "It's actually pretty simple, Chief," He looks at him, calmly, with almost no emotion. "We won, you lost. You're not as strong as you thought apparently," "You're going to have to take that up with Althior, Johon. I've got this nice whip, and I'd like you two to get something besides money and consumables, so you if you don't get the eye, you for sure will be getting the Claw." Cute Loot Karie- Emergency Essence, 75 gold Johon- Ectoplasm, Claw OR Eye, to be determined, 30 gold Althior- Ectoplasm, Emergency Essence, Claw OR Eye, to be determined, 20 Gold "I can take the claw, but I don't believe I have any use of it, so if either of you would be interested in purchasing it from me, I'd be willing to negotiate a fair price." "I'm not sure what to do with the documents actually. There's a reason those octo-eyed megablocks wanted it." "The Ziegfrieds will be able to figure it out. They're smarter than they look." He stared at the documents intently, "but the spark is but a fairytale. They seek after a lost cause," Karie turned to the party."Well, we got one loose end to clear up." She says while pointing to the chief. Althior smiles, "Now, what to do with you?" He circles the Oculoid chief, grinning. He collects a vial full of the Oculoid's Ink. He corks it and shakes it a bit. "Sorry, I'm a bit of a hoarder." He takes the Scepter, looking into the eye of the Oculoid with a look of pure seriousness. "Now, do you still believe you are superior?" Quote
Endgame Posted September 19, 2013 Author Posted September 19, 2013 "You're in denial, you necromantic bastard." The chief spits, his voice wavering with every syllable. "We're beings closest to you in ideals you've ever met for a long, long time, Althior. Only you're too weak to take what you believe in to the logcial extreme. Say the Spark is just a fairytale? Maybe the documents are. Not even our Master is quite certain what created it. But the Spark is already ours. As for whether or not the Oculoids are superior... I know I am not, now. I am a failure on the field of battle. And yet, I am a faceless pawn... Nameless, with no possessions... Almost an object. And yet, you learned to hate! You learned to despise a thing! So, in an aspect... I completed my duty to the letter. My replacement will be taking my role within the next few hours, heroes. My death will hinder the plan none. So really.. What did you achieve? Got some gold? Were the mental scars worth it? Kyah heh heh heh heh...!" "...You're insane." Keolo accuses, one finger pointing at the Chief. "But that laugh... There were black silhouettes guarding these documents when I went to retrieve them. I couldn't identify them... But that laugh. It was you guarding those documents, wasn't it, you bastard?!" The Oculoid Chief cackles, gurgling his own inky blood as he does so. "Kyah heh heh heh! Guilty as charged! When you stole those documents from us, you forced us to launch a retrieval squad... The hired heroes complicating matters further. So we had to both break into your manor and stave off those three rats long enough to get the documents and kill each and every person who got even a glimpse of them. So, yes, Keolo, it was you who drew us to the forest this entire time. And allow me to predict your next question... How long have I been guarding those documents?" Keolo nods numbly. It seems even in death the Chief was managing to faze the archaeologist. "50 years. Longer than you've been alive, Keolo." Keolo clenches his hands into fists, his white knuckles barely visible from beneath his charcoal black gloves. A fire of determination and anger is ignited in his eyes, as he holds his hand out towards the Oculoid Claw. "With all due respect, heroes... May I borrow that claw for just one moment? I want to be the one to split this abomination in half for what he's done." "Even as little more than a faceless minion, I've managed to scar so many of you! it's wonderful, isn't it?!" It seems the Chief was getting even more delirious in his fatally wounded state. Quote
K-Nut Posted September 19, 2013 Posted September 19, 2013 Althior tosses the claw to Keolo. "Be my guest," Quote
Endgame Posted September 19, 2013 Author Posted September 19, 2013 (edited) Keolo silently catches the claw, holding the severed hand by the wrist. He looks at the Chief with a combination of melancholy and anger, holding the claw above is head. Just as the Chief seems to begin spewing another tirade of vitriolic words, Keolo brings the claw smashing down. The barbed talons of the claw slice through the Chief, practically destroying his eye. he stumbles back and collapses to the ground, ink from his body puring out from every wound. His body seems to deflate, pieces of him getting scattered across the barren clearing. he rasps out one final sentence: "Master... I've failed you..." The Chief is reduced to pile of writhing plasm, a pink eye smoldering with hatred staring out from inside the mass of ink. it stares down the four humans with scorn and resentment before flickering out and fading entirely, its plasmid corpse releasing the dark magic inside of it in a burst of light and dissolving away. The Chief was dead. Keolo drops the claw, panting from the physical exertion. "Hah... Mine is a dangerous profession, heroes. I've had so many curses and hexes put on me during my expeditions... Artifacts have poisoned me, relics have cursed me, guardians have attempted to destroy me. I've lost my youth to this job, and now I even have a permanent case of chills from one particularly frosty location. Its why I wear this bloody hood all the time. And yet... I loved my job. But the expedition for those damn documents was actually the second. The first time, the document's "protectors"... Those Oculoids... Took the life of the kid I was mentoring. Needless to say, it was a bit devastating. I knew my job was dangerous, but I never thought anyone's life was truly on the line. And then I gambled with one. And I lost. I retired for a couple of years, laid low in Taurost. This second expedition to get the documents was my first time stretching the old muscles again. And you know what? I enjoyed it. All that dribble the Oculoids were spewing about "meaning" and "purpose"? I just do what makes me happy, and it seems to be working pretty damn well. So, farewell, heroes. Best of luck on your travels - I have the feeling we may meet again." QM Note: Just say your good-byes to Keolo and I'll put the ending of the quest up. Edited September 19, 2013 by Endgame Quote
Kintobor Posted September 19, 2013 Posted September 19, 2013 Karie watched the Oculoid deflate, it's eye locking onto the party. She grabbed her arm as she witnessed the creature turn into a puddle of ooze. "I think I'm ready to leave." Karie nodded to Keolo. She was ready to be rid of this nightmare and leave the forest. Endgame Posted September 20, 2013 Author Posted September 20, 2013 "Thank you for your services, heroes." The archaelogist and the heroes part ways, the heroes beginning their trek back to the Ziegfried Manor. The forest seemed almost serene now, peaceful with the threat of the Oculoids purged from it. Trees swayed in the wind as the party walked back, now admiring the once corrupted pieces of scenery in the forest. It was quite a pleasant place, despite the atrocious beings that had lurked here not even a few hours ago. And yet... A feeling of unease grips at the hearts and minds of the party. They had managed to unearth a massive conspiracy, and yet failed to make even the slightest dent in it... What pieces of information they had were unuseable, or downright ominous. They managed to slay a few Oculoids, but they were mere objects, likely replaced by the time the heroes arrived at Ziegfried manor victorious. They had saved the forest and its inhabitants, but something far more was at stake... The heroes were triumphant, but they couldn't help but feel like they had tangled themselves in with a power far greater than any of them could begin to imagine. Doubt and confusion plaguing their minds, the trek through the forest goes by in a blur, the heroes soon arriving at Ziegfried manor. Goldraum paces around the Courtyard, impatient as ever. The Wizard raises an eyebrow. "What took you so long? And why are you all covered in ink?" The party simply offers Goldraum the documents he had requested. "Well, better late than never. Though I presume you Heroica types have already read through this entire stack of documents..." Goldraum grumbles. The purple clad ether user begins to peruse the documents, his eyebrows raising higher and higher with every paragraph. An ink stain on his thumb clues him into the passage on the back, flipping over the documents to reveal the Chief's final foreboding verse. The intrigue in his eyes is obvious, even trumping his normally stuck-up aura. "Well... Despite its lack of specific finformation... These documents are quite interesting, to say the least." Goldraum humphs as he rifles through his cloak's pockets, pulling out three royal blue bags. he levitates one into the plams of each hero. "150 gold to each hero, as promised. I'll be sure to put in word to my mother about this." With the rewards in hand and the Oculoid Chief slain, the party knew that... ~The Quest Was Succesful!~ The Party: Althior Emorith (And Finnegan) Level 36 2/4 Necromancer *Earns triple XP* Power: 48 (53 for spells) Power Bonus: +5 Spells Defense: 6 (4+2) Health: 41/46 (5+5+Chicken Drumstick (1)+35) Ether: 24/49 (5+5+35+4) Gold: 300 Equipment: Scepter of Divine Affinity (WP:12, Has ⅙ chance to deal Cursed effect on attacks and ⅙ chance to deal Blessed effect on successful healing, Staff), Spellbound Gloves (+5 power when casting Spells, doubled if target is weak to Element, Handwear), Ethereal Cloak (SP:2, Max Ether +4, Backwear), Medal of Glory (Wearer earns triple experience, Accessory), Robe of the Elven Necromancer (SP: 4, Body Wear) Inventory: Dragoro (WP:8, Wand), Skeleton Decoy, Potion x6, Tonic x10, Grand Potion, Grand Tonic x2, Ether Core x2, Bedroll, Remedy x9, Mead, Smelling Salts, Diamond (Light), Topaz (Lightning), Amethyst (Darkness), Ruby (Fire), Sapphire (Wind), Garnet (Earth), Opal (Ice), Aquamarine (Water), Emerald (Wood), Skull Shield (SP: 6, immune to darkness elemental damage), Bone x3, Elixirs x3, Phoenix Incense x2, Garnet Lamp of Summoning, Deadly Poison, Grating Stone x2, Tasty Fish, Ectoplasm, Emergency Essence, Oculoid Claw (WP: 13, Club, 1/6 chance of infecting the targetted enym on succesful hits.) Their voices echo around the cavernous room they were in, their voices accented by the crackle and hum of a nearby flame. "We've had a failed operation, milord. An information supression assignment went awry in Uland." "Specifics, if you would be so kind." "Let's see... Ooooh. you're not going to like the sound of this, boss." "What I don't like the sound of is your incessant stalling, Iris. The report, please." "Heh heh heh... Oh, calm down, master. It isn't as bad as I originally made it out to be, milord. So, information supression. Some archaelogist managed to swipe some documents relating to our Spark about a month prior." "An incident I was not informed of." "Do you really expect me to stay on top of every little going on in this god forsaken planet reported in by our Ocu-" The superior of the conversation seems to have had more than enough of Iris's complaining. A dozen phantasmal hands immediately shoot from the ground and the formidable Oculoid Mastermind by the head and tentacles, dragging her down to eye level with her master. Her master's gaze, despite her constant teasing, never ceased to shake her to her core. Even as a being as powerful as her - one of the more formidable dmeons wandering Olegaia, as it stands - her Master's eyes blazed with a fathomless power that he did not hesistate to use on all who crossed him. The humans would be learning that one much too well all too soon, if her Master was to have his way. There was no mercy in those eyes. "Yes, Iris. I believe I do. You are the greatest of the Oculoids. I expect you to at least be a competent creature. Now, your report, before I feel the urge to amputate a few tentacles to prove my point." "Y-y-yes, Master..." Iris stammers, her carefree attitude melting away at her Master's threats. She had no dobut he would exact them if need be. "S-so... Ahem. So, yeah. Some documents regarding the Lifespark got hijacked about a month ago. Three weeks, to be precise. As soonas the archaelogist gets back home he makes a business deal with some Ziegfried fool to exhange them for some coin. The wizard on the recieving end of the deal hired some middlemen, heroes of Heroica to get the documents for him. We sent a squad in order to murder anyone who has even set eyes on the papers. Long story short, the entire squad, plus some wayward Oculoids they rounded up, are currently dead." "Fatality count." "On our side? Eleven, master." "Keep talking, Iris. Please say something I may possibly like." "The Chief of the squadron managed to peruse the documents. Apparently they betrayed nothing of the spark itself, only a fairy tale of its origins. Only a select few still know about it, and even those people remain completely unenlightened as to how it works or where it is. There was a minimal amount of information to be supressed in the first place. Sooooo... That good enough for ya, milord?" "Hmph. It's a start. I trust you will replace the fallen oculoids as soon as possible?" "Already done, master." The Master lets out a single chuckle, the one simple syllable managing to be more menacing then all of the Oculoids' cackling combined. "Perhaps you aren't useless after all, Iris. Run along now... I have a Spark to temper. You're dismissed." Iris thinks of letting loose a snarky comment, but thinks twice about it and perishes the thought. She bows deeply instead. She knew by now that displeasing the Master was a surefire way to get yourself killed... Iris heeds her lord's instruction turning to exit the gargantuan chamber. "Very well, Master. Thank you." As his subordinate exits the Cavern, the Master turns to the centerpeice of the collosal room: The Lifespark. The Regret raises his arms aloft, ready to once again continue his preparation of the divine inferno. The green flames silhouette his ghostly form, convulsing with laughter. "Now, my Spark... We have some work to do! GAAHAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!" A massive citadel, dominating the horizon. Surrounded by hellish cold winds and freezing cold waters. Towers of darkness, dwarfing the sky and piercing the heavens. A master of death dwells the Citadel's corridors, commanding legions of the faceless.
