Kez Posted September 8, 2013 Posted September 8, 2013 Wow, just wow, amazing entries everyone, voting will be rather hard Quote
Rumble Strike Posted September 8, 2013 Posted September 8, 2013 That windmill is absolutely gorgeous Quote
Cara Posted September 8, 2013 Posted September 8, 2013 Thank you! Was just changing thread to post my entry was up. Reading the quests that take place in Xu or touch upon the great airships had me wondering how they could be powered. Someone's dialog (and I WISH I could find it again to reference) made a reference to a windmill in Xu technology and everything clicked! Full size versions are up on my flickr page. Quote
Palathadric Posted September 8, 2013 Posted September 8, 2013 A lot of new and great entries since I last got on. Great job, all! Quote
JimBee Posted September 8, 2013 Posted September 8, 2013 Amazing entries so far! Cara, I especially love that organic look of the windmill, not only is it genius build-wise, I think it could be used as reference for the type of advanced technology that the Ji Pei use in the game. It's a lot more advanced and refined looking than the Ninjago airship that Sandy has used in the past for the Ji Pei. Quote
Niku Posted September 8, 2013 Posted September 8, 2013 Wow I knew there were going to be great entries on this contest, but the last ones are really great, speacilly the temple of Ennoc, the statues and the top of it are just fantastic. And the windmill spiral column is great as the rocks. Overall great entries everyone. Good luck to all. Quote
Palathadric Posted September 9, 2013 Posted September 9, 2013 Wow! Such great MOCs. Niku, those gates are very imposing and Cara I would really like to see something like what you've built in-game. Excellent. I also would love to see Fiianat and Etzel collaborate on another Paladin quest. You've already got a quest goal outlined. Quote
Brickdoctor Posted September 9, 2013 Posted September 9, 2013 Wow. Voting for this is going to be hard. Right now I think I give the edge to Fianat because of the statues and how well the architecture is done. Quote
Balthazar Posted September 9, 2013 Posted September 9, 2013 Amazing contest! Really like Fianat`s Ennon ruins, and other awesome entries  Quote
Emma Posted September 9, 2013 Posted September 9, 2013 There are some amazing entries - especially within the last bunch posted. Overall there are a good number of beautiful Mocs with great construction, unique parts usage, wonderful stories, and they're well photographed... voting is going to be hard . Quote
Flipz Posted September 9, 2013 Posted September 9, 2013 There are a number of people who have entered the contest who may mysteriously find a Heroica-related PM in their inboxes in the future... Quote
Duvors Posted September 9, 2013 Posted September 9, 2013 There are a number of people who have entered the contest who may mysteriously find a Heroica-related PM in their inboxes in the future... Are you finally going to QM a quest? Quote
MstrOfPppts Posted September 10, 2013 Posted September 10, 2013 Only two entries to vote for?! And you said the voting is going to be very simple ... this might have been one of the harder choices to make Quote
Dragonator Posted September 10, 2013 Author Posted September 10, 2013 Only two entries to vote for?! And you said the voting is going to be very simple ... this might have been one of the harder choices to make Simple to follow! Sadly not everyone can be a winner. Quote
PsyKater Posted September 10, 2013 Posted September 10, 2013 Ugh, hardest vote on EB ever. So great entries. Very well done, everyone! Quote
Rumble Strike Posted September 10, 2013 Posted September 10, 2013 I liked the other voting style where we have 10 points to distribute however we like, narrowing these down to 2 is very tough! Quote
Sandy Posted September 10, 2013 Posted September 10, 2013 Alright, with the contest closed and voting under way, it's high time I said a word or two about the entries, as the creator and manager of Heroica RPG. First of all, I want to thank each and every one of you who participated in the building contest! It was exciting to see so many entries from people who have not played the game themselves (at least yet), since it gave me a perspective of how the game and it's world looks from an outsider's perspective. I admit that the condition of making the entry fit the world of Heroica RPG must have been tough for non-players, but many of you prevailed even despite of it. Here's my thoughts on each entry, again from the point-of-view of the game manager. They will have no bearing on the results of this contest, as the winners will be chosen purely by voting. I'll mostly evaluate how well the entry fits the game world, but also give building skills and techniques appreciation where it's due. I'll rate both story relation and construction skills from 1 to 5, with the total score being up to 10. ***** Ambush on Castle Fortaan by mandrakesarecool2 Story: 3/5 Construction: 1/5 Total: 4/10 Thematically this is a retcon to the events depicted in Heroica RPG, since in the game's story there was a small group of heroes that invaded Fortaan and killed the Orc King, but your group is obviously different from those in the game. I see the different classes well represented, though, even though the pictures aren't clear on whether there's five or six of them in your MOC. Build-wise there's not much going on, but I do like the birch trees. Attack upon Kezinbricks keep by Kez Story: 3/5 Construction: 3/5 Total: 6/10 The mismatched army comprised of different factions is actually not far from how it goes in Heroica RPG as well. You obviously did some research on the game's different factions, and the minifigs are true to how the factions are represented, even though the scene itself has nothing to do with the on-going game. There's a lot of things happening in the creation, and it could have used a more subdued and cohesive color scheme. The ruins themselves look the part, and they kinda remind me of an official set from an old Castle or Harry Potter-line. Built interior is always a plus! Shrine of the Blessed by Etzel Story: 5/5 Construction: 5/5 Total: 10/10 This is not the first temple of the Paladin Order we've seen from you, but by Ennoc, it's certainly the most immaculately beautiful one! The cohesion of the colors, the symmetry of the patterns, the little intricate details... Even the minifigs fit perfectly! I have to grant it to you - you own the Paladin faction in this game. You have to give us a picture of that angel statue that's blocked by the columns once the contest is over, though. Attacking the Lion Lord Outpost... by Balthazar Story: 1/5 Construction: 2/5 Total: 3/10 You used the minifigs from newest Castle-line to represent Dastan and a unique faction, posing the Dastanese as the bad guys, which has no real connection to the game's story. Construction-wise, the castle is nice, if a bit unfinished, but the natural rockface is a bit wonky, going all zigzaggy up and inside the wall. This is just a Castle MOC, in my eyes, there's not enough that fits the theme of the contest. Orc Tombs by Zepher Story: 4/5 Construction: 2/5 Total: 6/10 You took the storyline about the Orcish Wars and expanded it with a touching tale of rivals who came to respect one another. It's a nice, tranquil scene, but I do wish there was more going on in it. Especially the tombstones could have stood out more. The Ruins of Fortaan by Wedge09 Story: 3/5 Construction: 4/5 Total: 7/10 Like Zepher, you took pre-existing information and expanded upon it, essentially building the world of the game more with your creation. I personally would have loved to see some sort of action in the ruins, maybe a ghost of the king walking in the staircase. Nevertheless, the construction is beautiful, serene and shows a forgotten place well. Burning House by Rumble Strike Story: 3/5 Construction: 2/5 Total: 5/10 I interpret this as an origin story for Tarn, your game character. If it's not, I have a hard time finding other connection to the game world (besides there being a cleric, of course). It's a tragic scene, and your dramatic photos really captured the essence of it. Construction-wise there could have been more to the house, and there was certainly room for more details in the yard as well. Peep's Sheep 'n' Livestock Co by Tazmaniac Story: 3/5 Construction: 5/5 Total: 8/10 This creation's story feels like a pitch for a quest like the ones we have in the game, so kudos for calling us all into a new adventure against your terrifyingly terrific monster! Building-wise, the scene is dynamic, fun, and colorful. It don't mind that it's out of scale for minifigs at all! The call of adventure by Harton Story: 5/5 Construction: 4/5 Total: 9/10 This story captures the essence of why I think most characters join Heroica - the call of adventure is that strong for those who are tired of doing the same mundane labors day in and day out. That's why this creation fits the theme perfectly, even if you hadn't written some of the known locations into your flavor text (which is great that you did, anyway - shows that you did some research). The little house is wonderfully crafted, I love your attention to details. Defending the Tower of Bellasur by Hench Story: 1/5 Construction: 1/5 Total: 2/10 Well, you chose to write a completely original background story for this, which unfortunately disconnects it from the theme of this contest. Your main picture isn't showing, either, so it's impossible to evaluate the creation. Eubric Freeport by Emma Story: 5/5 Construction: 5/5 Total: 10/10 I'm awestruck! What would look like a hodgepodge of weird small houses to an outsider is an amazing trip to a miniature Eubric to those familiar with the game world. I'm even more honored by the fact that you were not familiar with the game, but took the time and the effort to search for references of the houses and their general looks. I can definitely spot all the important landmarks - Heroica Hall, all the headquarters of the Six Houses, the Theater, the Academy, the temples, the Hovels, the fishmarket, the cemetery, the Triad Park... Your entry really stands out for being such a unique take on the theme of the contest. Exquisite work, I'm totally in love with it! Dastan Empire Dragon Tomb by Kumpelkante Story: 4/5 Construction: 4/5 Total: 8/10 Ooh, what a menacing tomb! I can picture this scene being one of the countless adventures that members of Heroica have gone through. The creation is well-made as well, with the intimidating dragon's skull as the clear center-piece of the entry. Fortaan Abyss by MstrOfPppts Story: 5/5 Construction: 5/5 Total: 10/10 Now there's what a good quest is all about - tough situations, fierce battles and loads of loot! I love the variety of the heroes you have in your "party", it's great that you've used some of the races exclusively created for this game. The built is superb as well, I really like how the action dynamically follows the winding staircase. The use of the tiles from Heroica boardgame's tiles as decoration is a nice touch as well. I have to commend you for the crisp photography too. I'd love to see more shots from different angles for this creation when the contest is over! Dwarven Flying Ship by mkjosha Story: 4/5 Construction: 3/5 Total: 7/10 You've certainly made an effort with writing a proper background story for this creation. The story adds a great sense of adventure to compliment the built scene. You just got one detail wrong: Newharbour isn't the best place to find people to go on crazy quests, Eubric is (since it has Heroica Hall). The airship you've built looks great, but the mountain ruins look a tad incomplete. Derlin's Home by Legonardo Story: 1/5 Construction: 4/5 Total: 5/5 What a great house! I love the color scheme, the rockface looks superb, and even the smoke rising from the chimney looks authentic. Too bad it's not complete. However, apart from the Heroica-tile on the druid's wall, it has no connection to the storyline of the game. A shame, really. Ragarr's Tower by insomniaart Story: 1/5 Construction: 1/5 Total: 2/10 I'm sorry, but neither the storyline nor the construction makes any sense to me. Thanks for participating, though. Guarded Inn by Chromeknight Story: 2/5 Construction: 3/5 Total: 5/5 A nice nod to an old set, but I wish there would have been a more distinct connection to the game, especially since the entry is coming from a player. The reds and yellows really make the building, but I would have loved to see more details in the surroundings (and many of the bricks aren't pushed into place well enough). Agleon Erigeon, The Paladin Order Quarters. by Niku Story: 2/5 Construction: 3/5 Total: 5/10 While the gates are impressive enough, I fail to see how they relate to the god of talking frogs. Maybe the building would have worked better as some sort of elven fortress. The Swamp Witch (With “Flick-Fire” Guardian Swamp Toad!) by Ragnar_Deerslayer Story: 2/5 Construction: 2/5 Total: 4/10 The background story has a nice fairy tale feeling to it, but the connections to the game world are a bit slim. Instead of a lone adventurer, maybe the Swamp Witch (loving the minifig, by the way) could have faced a party of heroes of Heroica. The construction resembles an actual set quite closely, down to flick-fire missiles. I don't think TLG has yet added a frog to their flick-fire features, though. Arckhasan siege by Mikisajlo Story: 1/5 Construction: 1/5 Total: 2/10 The pictures are too small to make heads or tails of this creation. The story's connection to the game escapes me, as well. "Say Hello To My Little Friend!" by ShaydDeGrai Story: 4/5 Construction: 5/5 Total: 9/10 This is a scene I'd love to see in an actual quest. Great humor, great action, great dragon chihuahua! The Stone Hammer, Strivvian Blacksmith. by Scubacarrot Story: 5/5 Construction: 4/5 Total: 9/10 I have an inkling we will be seeing this building in an upcoming quest by you. The building and the color scheme fits perfectly to the city of Strivvi that you've created for the game, and the use of some "familiar faces" among the minifigs is commendable. The stonework on the building is lovely, although I personally wouldn't have minded to see a few windows to break the pattern. The Magic Fountain of Waldurk Forest by vecchiasignoraceppo Story: 2/5 Construction: 3/5 Total: 5/10 You took a different approach to the theme of this contest by making a reference to the boardgames rather than this forum RPG. It doesn't matter that much, since the boardgames were where all of this began. It's nice to see a feature from the boardgame in a different scale, but I personally think the scene could have used some minifigs or other type of action. The old outpost by Jippon Story: 4/5 Construction: 4/5 Total: 8/10 I've been thinking if I could incorporate the dark druid from the boardgames into the HRPG's world somehow, and your entry is an interesting option for that. I really love the menacing minifig, and the ruins look great as well. Very inspired by the LotR-sets, I figure, but I don't mind since the sets are great, anyway. Etheric Windmill, Xu Peninsular by Cara Story: 5/5 Construction: 5/5 Total: 10/10 Whoa! Such ethereal beauty! I wish I had your skills of making otherworldly technology like that! Despite being highly advanced technology, your etheric windmill does not feel out of place in a fantasy world at all! I really appreciate the research you made for this creation, and the fact that it expands on what's established. Perhaps we'll see that fishing girl join Heroica played by you, one day? Temple of Ennoc by Fianat Story: 5/5 Construction: 5/5 Total: 10/10 This is insane! I never expected to see anything like this in this contest, but I'm thoroughly pleased to have been wrong! The fact that the creation fits the game world perfectly makes me even more awe-struck, since it's not just a great creation with the theme tacked on it. The statues and the tympanum of the temple are pure awesomeness. The minifigs bring the creation to life. It's a true honor to get an entry like this. Dock by Evillemur Story: 1/5 Construction: 3/5 Total: 4/10 It's too bad you did not really tell anything about the creation, but I can imagine the dock fitting the game world. The water looks nice, although maybe a bit too pure and textured to belong a city dock, where the water is usually murky and still. ***** That's all, I think! Five entries got a full score of 10 out of 10 from me, with three others coming close, which only tells of the absolutely high quality of the entries. Thank you again for participating, everyone, and a thousand thanks to Dragonator and the rest of the staff for organizing this! It's been a great two years for Heroica RPG, let there be many more great years to come! Quote
Scubacarrot Posted September 10, 2013 Posted September 10, 2013 Windows are structural weaknesses. Strivvians do not use them. Thanks a lot for the feedback Sandy, as well as to the people who have voted for my entry, it's kind of an ego boost. Quote
Rumble Strike Posted September 10, 2013 Posted September 10, 2013 Yes that scared little boy is Tarn, and the Cleric is Rystael Quote
Palathadric Posted September 10, 2013 Posted September 10, 2013 I really am tremendously impressed by people like Cara, Fianat, and Emma who aren't even playing the game but have builds that fit so perfectly into it. We need more heroes in Heroica Hall! Quote
Duvors Posted September 11, 2013 Posted September 11, 2013 I really am tremendously impressed by people like Cara, Fianat, and Emma who aren't even playing the game but have builds that fit so perfectly into it. We need more heroes in Heroica Hall! I agree, are any of you thinking of joining soon(pleasepleasepleasepleasejoinsoonhinthintnugenuge). Quote
MstrOfPppts Posted September 11, 2013 Posted September 11, 2013 Thanks Sandy for the great recap! However I guess that that's all the pictures I have, since there were only 3 allowed and I've already taken the MOC apart for I have some work to do in SoNE ... I did take more than three pictures though the angles are only slightly different. I'll see what I can do. Quote
Fianat Posted September 11, 2013 Posted September 11, 2013 Sandy, thanks for your topic, you have done a really big work) Quote
Niku Posted September 11, 2013 Posted September 11, 2013 .Thanks for the comments, I think they are a nice way to improve all aspects in which currently are not that well, to continue growing as a builder. Greetings. Quote
