What a totally ridiculous attitude.

AFOLS are dedicated serious collectors. If they can't form a knee-jerk opinion on the basis of almost no evidence, then really, who can?

I think you need to reconsider if you are a true fan. Your reasonable attitude makes me think that you are nothing other than an apologist for TLG, and possibly even someone they have planted here to cover up the fact that they are destroying everything that made TLG great, and ignoring the valued opinions of many millions of AFOLs.

Of course City is dying. It always has been.

I remember a wise man who once said......"From a certain point of view" !

City is not dying, because of us.....the MOC builders who take what Lego gives us and we raise it up higher....so it will never die unless we let it.

I do see a pattern though......first half.....great vehicles and fire or police.....second half......special sub-themes....i.e. harbour, mining, city services (medical centre & garage) in 2012 and coast guard plus cargo services/transport in 2013.

So we should expect different kind of city sets for the second half of the year.

Yeah, didn't we also say crap to the police/fire/nothing else/where's my goddamn 80's sets? last year and the year before that and the year before that too? Turned we we're ... err right

Mr. Elijah Timms, please hold your hand out as I'm about to drop a large hammer on it. Don't be afraid, it might feel like a kiss from a goddess .. keep an open mind

City is not dead, it's flourishing with crooks, police, fire in vacant buildings, gigantic 4WDs/SUVs and loads of trucksdrivers who got nowhere to live

Now Town, that really is dead as a consistent yellow LEGO brick

It seems to be the same every year after a list of rumoured sets is announced. Of course LEGO City is going to offer fire and police sets, but let's just wait until the first pictures show up. The names of some of the other vehicles definitely sound promising.

I haven't heavily invested in city sets since 2009, and bought my first one since 2010 this year, the action sets they've been releasing lately are completely unappealing to me. I really don't like the fact either that sets are being given several minifigs with seemingly nothing to do but stare at what the other guy is doing. If they want to give us extra parts, give us pieces to cover the gaping holes you leave in the wheel wells in pretty much every vehicle you release,

I'm sorry I'm not like most Eurobrickers who think LEGO is their best friend and can't do any wrong, unless they don't give me free stuff. But a list of even more Police is not a welcomed sight no matter how you would like to spin it.

I wouldn't have anything against police sets in a different colour than the last 8 years. Some grey / dark blue vehicles would be nice. So I basically have nothing against Police every year, but please make it look different. Special Forces was a step in the right direction but any more bright blue / white would be boring.

An Airport city firetruck would be cool. I missed out on the last one. As for the police sets, fret not! They are going to be very must-haves if they all will look like this:

Personally I can't wait to get my hand on these.

They won't look like the sets for the movie. The movie line is standalone and has it's own evil Robo-Police Force. City is City and will probably look very similar to previous years.

Update:

I forgot yesterday that there will even be an airport fire truck (I already edited in the first post).

Ah, well that's okay......we haven't had one of those in seven years, which makes me think.....the ages on the boxes usual give a age distance of six years. So thinking that way could it be that Lego do so many rehashes of say police and fire so catches a new group of 6-12 year olds ?

I could only hope they look like this... I'd have no problem not buying them. Too futuristic for me. But alas, the actual new line will probably make their way into my collection, eventually. I am really excited about the airport fire truck, though :classic:

Bricknblue, sorry if I sounded like I was trying to tell you what to do. What I should have said was "Personally, I'm going to wait until pics are unveiled to pass judgement." I certainly hear you with regards to the news of more police... OF COURSE I do... If you see my initial reaction to this thread, I said I'd likely skip the police sets (except for the motorcycle chase). But my first impressions have been proven wrong before. At any rate, sorry if I came off as confrontational, it was not my intent... (Offers a brick built olive branch)

As for the news of an Airport Fire Truck-- excellent!! I didn't start collecting City until '09, so that'll definitely go on my list.

I'm not surprised at all about a new Police Theme for 2014, it seems right on schedule. I hope the new HQ set looks good because it is going to be difficult for me to replace the current 2011 set as it is one of my favorites. I'll be interested to see the Bandit's hideout as well. Hopefully it will be a warehouse-type building.

As for the Great Vehicles I'm looking forward to seeing the Car Transport, and the Airport fire truck sounds good, too.

Thanks for the info!

Thanks KD for the interesting early info. Like others I'm more interested in the non-police sets.

I even wonder about why we don't get a new construction site. The last one was released in 2009. And I would have bet that we get one this year. But it doesn't seem so.

I think the mining sets are probably too similar to construction vehicles to expect to see any soon.

*EDIT*

I'm erring on the side of cautious scepticism as some of these sound too like stuff from the last couple of years. I'll come back and comment more when there are images from retailer catalogues floating round.

You must be new to the city theme then. Every year is similar because city is very popular theme, so why mess with what works?

What and lose our chance at complaining? I don't understand your suggestion ;-)

There's an old saying... 'vote with your dollars.'

TLG keeps doing police themes because they sell. And maybe we AFOLs are tired of them, but they don't pick these sets for us. They make them for kids. And 1 police/fire theme every 2 years keeps it fresh when a new generation of kids are starting to be brought into Lego. And parents and children will keep buying Police themed stuff, even if AFOLs refuse. So, I think it's pretty clear City is alive and well, unlike things like Pirates, or even castle which keeps getting put on hiatus and brought back.

I'll probably pass on most of these as I'm trying to downsize, and prefer things like the Creator Expert line (Modulars, Horizon Express, 3:1 houses etc) that invoke memories of more complex 80s & early 90s sets.

I was being subtle, you missed my inference.

Agreed -- they just renamed it to "Friends." A pet shop, vet, stable, school, hair salon, bakery, cafe ... and next year we're getting a farm and some beach sets. Friends has been consistently producing good, detailed buildings. You just have to deal with the fact that you don't get mini-figs.

Which are the more complex 80s / early 90s sets? I was an archetype of the 'Hey!' kid back then, but my memory isn't so good now :)

For example, here is 1989...

http://www.brickset....=Town&year=1989

Not more complex (allthough I think the airplanes are, compared those huge Duplo things we get now), but Town was much more diverse and fun :classic:

It was actually possible to assemble a whole city. What a crazy idea! Now it's all police and robbers. City have gone the down the drain. Maybe TLG got a Detroit license for cheap?

Edit : 1989 was a bad pick, hardly any buildings that year. Anything from the early 80's to the late 90's fitted right well together
