Rick Posted August 14, 2013 Author Posted August 14, 2013 It was actually possible to assemble a whole city. What a crazy idea! Now it's all police and robbers. City have gone the down the drain. Don't forget that Creator gets two or three buildings every year that can easily be integrated in a town layout and for AFOLs there are the modular buildings of course. Quote
1974 Posted August 14, 2013 Posted August 14, 2013 Still lacks the coherence of Town. Also Modulars look odd compared to City offerings (or is it the other way round?) Anyway, it's been like that for a decade, I don't expect it to change anytime soon. That's why I put a lot of money into BL instead of TLG's current sets Quote
lightningtiger Posted August 14, 2013 Posted August 14, 2013 In that Nat Geo doco a year or so ago, it was stated that the police station was there best selling set type.....and judging by the popularity of Super Heroes the idea of good guys vs bad guys is even more upfront.....police sells. Speaking to a few mums and dads shopping for their kids over the last year or so......their kids like cops chasing robbers, hence Lego is just playing to that order. Though we might hit police overload.....like 4 years straight of police releases.....oh, well I'll buy them because it's City (as long as they are new designs ). Only time will tell when images finally appear to judge even from a distance if Lego has misses or hits on their hands. Quote
Overcold Posted August 15, 2013 Posted August 15, 2013 I'm quite fine with another police theme, so long as they create and expand their ideas. I would also like to see more dominant non-police/fire themes (Cafe, hotel, a revamp of farm...ect.) alongside of police. But then again, I guess it also depends on the demands of the customers that Lego City is aiming their sets to. Quote
jonwil Posted August 15, 2013 Posted August 15, 2013 I am ok with another police theme as well as long as it has interesting new parts and details (or existing parts in new colors or in hard-to-get colors) The City Police stations (I own all of them since the World City 7035 station except for the one with the light-up cop and the later non-light-up-cop reissue of the same station) are great parts packs and a good source of trans-blue. canuckster Posted August 15, 2013 Posted August 15, 2013 Which are the more complex 80s / early 90s sets? I was an archetype of the 'Hey!' kid back then, but my memory isn't so good now :) For example, here is 1989... http://www.brickset....=Town&year=1989 I didn't have much from the 80s town, but if I had to pick I'd say that 90s was a bit more complex, vehicles started getting nicer lines to them instead of just being a few square bricks and a windshield slapped together. The Octan station from 92 is easily my favourite town piece of all time and IMO the best gas station they ever made, which is why I'm disappointed they haven't improved on it, I wouldn't mind a higher price point if they give us everything a gas station should have, at least 3 or 4 pumps, a car wash that fits cars and smaller trucks, a repair bay with sliding door, and a tow truck. 7993 was such a disappointing release, I mean, they're releasing 6 wide vehicles and they barely fit into the station. antp Posted August 15, 2013 Posted August 15, 2013 (edited) The Octan station from 92 is easily my favourite town piece of all time and IMO the best gas station they ever made, I fully agree with that, that's my favourite set and the only town set from my childhood that I kept "as it" rather than disassemble and mix it with other parts Edited August 15, 2013 by antp Quote
timmyc1983 Posted August 15, 2013 Posted August 15, 2013 I consider the era I grew up with Town the golden age of LEGO Town/City... My first sets date back to 1990 (age 7) and my dark age began in 1997 mainly due to that year's dismal town selection ( http://www.brickset.com/browse/themes/?year=1997&theme=Town )... But I got the best of everything, best police station ever released 6398, best airport ever released 6597 and arguably the best ever town set in any category released, the aforementioned 1992 petrol station along with a host of buildings/vehicles found around town including a harbour and car racing tracks.... It would seem kid these days (God I'm old) just don't get the same joy from building a whole town, they want play cops and robbers with fast cars and gadgets.. So that's what TLG give them. Where as I was happy to keep my town going with as many buildings and vehicles of different types, kids now days clearly want police and fire with flashy lights etc. So we just have to wait in the wings until the occasional beauty comes along (like 3661 ) And if you don't like what TLG release you can always MOC Quote
jonwil Posted August 15, 2013 Posted August 15, 2013 The biggest negative with City is that many of the coolest sets (like the Town Square, Public Transit set, Bank & Money Transfer, Recycle Center and Parking Garage often end up as retailer exclusives around here (which means they are less likely to go on sale and be available at a good price) Quote
Wodanis Posted August 15, 2013 Posted August 15, 2013 I was quite happy to own the Recycling truck, Bank & Money transfer. These aren't as popular but a definite AFOL must have. (Really want the town square but drastically overpriced in Canada $150, a $50 mark up from the US price is horrible.) How cool would it be if they did make a post office in 2015? Quote
Pierre_Cochereau Posted August 15, 2013 Posted August 15, 2013 How cool would it be if they did make a post office in 2015? ... or the summer wave in 2014? Though I doubt it ... Quote
just2good Posted August 15, 2013 Posted August 15, 2013 ... or the summer wave in 2014? Though I doubt it ... I don't entirelly rule it out, but I think TLG doesn't wanna just in case they make a modular one. Then again, Summer City is always better than Winter wave City stuff. Quote
Mr. Elijah Timms Posted August 15, 2013 Posted August 15, 2013 Maybe they should do a post office now... In 10 years we may not have them in our society altogether. Quote
1974 Posted August 15, 2013 Posted August 15, 2013 If TLG does do a post office again I'm sure it'll feature an exploding door, a robber and a police car Yeah, proper post offices are a way of the dodo. I live in the second largest danish city and we got two left .. Quote
Legoman123 Posted August 15, 2013 Posted August 15, 2013 I'm going to get most f these sets, they all sound good. I've been going through a dark age when it come to city sets, but I think I'm finally getting out of it. ;-) Quote
Vindicare Posted August 15, 2013 Posted August 15, 2013 Can't say I'm not surprised to see police. The other list of sets sound good. But a race car/monster truck so soon? Seems odd, seeing as those are out now, soon to be released. The recreational vehicles with certainly be a welcomed addition. Quote
danimarroquin Posted August 16, 2013 Posted August 16, 2013 mmmmm really looking forward to the airport fire truck , hopefully this one would come out as a north american ones with the green colors . they should also make a airport fire truck station with a bigger side doors garages ! Quote

just2good Posted August 16, 2013 Posted August 16, 2013 Thanks for the info! The Airport Fire Truck does, indeed, sound like a beast of a truck! I'm interested now! Quote
1974 Posted August 16, 2013 Posted August 16, 2013 8wide trucks? In four years we'll have 12wide trucks and microscale buildings as a sideshow Quote
lightningtiger Posted August 16, 2013 Posted August 16, 2013 Some of them sound AWESOME......finally is Lego realising real scaling of vehicles ? My buy list is all of them but perhaps excepting Break Out From Prisoner Transport......8 wide actually wouldn't fit my other police 4/6 wides. I wonder if we finally also get new body work pieces for the touring car, but one can easily guess that the car carrier will have 4 wide smart cars on it. Quote
lightningtiger Posted August 16, 2013 Posted August 16, 2013 I wonder if the 8 wides will get an actual 8 wide windscreen......oh, that would be ever so handy for those of us who MOC trucks, etc.,. Quote
Zzz Posted August 16, 2013 Posted August 16, 2013 Break-out of the prison transport - SET 60043 Heavy duty prisoner van (American type design) 8 wide with 1 red quad bike with chain breaking prisoner out of van. 3 mini figs 2 criminals & 1 police You remember the colour on this one, Caseyref?
