Garmadon Posted February 12, 2014 Posted February 12, 2014 (edited) Does any one have good tips for making a stain glass window with semi clear 1x1 slopes? Hmm... Actually, the only thing I've ever built (or seen, I think) using them (your talking about trans-clear cheese slopes, right?) would be the third build in my Challenge VI entry, and those were only half windows If you had a few different colors (and the patience) you could make a mosaic or something though Ooc: Loving all the activity up here Edited February 12, 2014 by Garmadon Quote

nivremis Posted February 13, 2014 Posted February 13, 2014 (edited) After "joining" mitgardia a year ago and attempting to build for the final book 1 challenge, I've had little to no time at all to contribute at all. Regardless, I've been following the progress of GoH rather closely, so decided to come on today to just give a shoutout to you guys and say that your builds never cease to amaze, keep up the good work guys. Hopefully I'll be able to be more active at some point, but we all know real life has it's own priorities. Edit - Decided I'll upload those long overdue pictures of those builds I smashed together in a week of the final challenge - but never got around to contributing. Nothing spectecular I must say, but do have a gander and of course comments and criticisms are more than welcome. https://www.flickr.c...06/12489722243/ https://www.flickr.c...in/photostream/ https://www.flickr.c...in/photostream/ Edited February 13, 2014 by nivremis Quote
Direlda Posted February 13, 2014 Posted February 13, 2014 Wymond the Fox has returned from wandering the deep wilds of Mitgardia and wishes to pledge his services to the guild once more. He is at home in the wilderness having served as a guide through the various mountain ranges and having kept watch over a section of the wild near the southern border. Wymond prefers stealth and cunning to battle, though he can stand his own in a fight if the need arises. Now that I'm around a larger portion of my Lego collection, I hope to be able to build more and better than I did for the previous Book of Historica and to learn from the amazing builders in Historica. IenjoyLego89 Posted February 13, 2014 Posted February 13, 2014 (edited) Really like the builds nivremes shame you couldn't enter them in time. I hope to have my archery phase 2 uploaded tomorrow as well, if I get up early enough! Haha Edited February 13, 2014 by IenjoyLego89 Quote

Gideon Posted February 13, 2014 Posted February 13, 2014 Does any one have good tips for making a stain glass window with semi clear 1x1 slopes? The only time I've done it was in my Book I, Challenge VI entry, where I built the windows laying down in frames (2 bricks thick where I had trans-clear panel pieces in the bottom). With the 4 studs wide and I-don't-remember-how high surface, the cheese slopes created quite a pressure so it was no problems raising the windows vertically after pushing on the upper part of the frame (which actually was not possible to push all the way down on the studs). Good luck! Quote
robuko Posted February 13, 2014 Posted February 13, 2014 (edited) Does any one have good tips for making a stain glass window with semi clear 1x1 slopes? Keep them in tight with a row of bricks on each side until you are ready for photos. I nearly used this technique for my Temple of the Mad Monks but they fell out each time I moved it. Nearly turned me into a Mad Monk! Edited February 13, 2014 by robuko Quote
soccerkid6 Posted February 13, 2014 Posted February 13, 2014 Valdrfell Stables: @Nivremis: Glad to see you're still keeping an eye on Historica at least, I hope you get some building time soon. Your challenge I build looks very good, I like the fig posing and rockwork @Direlda: Glad to see you back in Mitgardia Quote

Kai NRG Posted February 13, 2014 Posted February 13, 2014 Does any one have good tips for making a stain glass window with semi clear 1x1 slopes? #1 - Don't try it unless you have a lot of patience! That's a key ingredient! Other than that, I would suggest mapping the design out (with actual bricks) on your desk/table/hard floor, making sure it's the right size and all. The larger it is the more patience you will need, I suggest you do a smaller pattern for starters, if you want a large window you can combine slopes and other trans-pieces (example). Keep in mind that four cheese on top of each other (rotated of course) = roughly 5 plates (actually slightly more, but usually a bit more pressure or a virtually unnoticeable crack between plates will remedy that). Here are some nice patterns, and here's a nice description of the cheese slope sizes. Cheese slope sizes are fairly consistent but not absolutely. In a stained glass window where the smallest size error can make a big difference, if you find that something's not working when it mathematically should, try swapping some of the cheese. Hopefully that helped you! Quote
janatale Posted February 13, 2014 Posted February 13, 2014 Does any one have good tips for making a stain glass window with semi clear 1x1 slopes? Here is a stained glass window I made of a cup and sword using trans plates and slopes. It's surprisingly stable since I just forced a lot of the pieces in there. I used a wall behind it to stablize while building, then took it down when it was complete. I used bracket pieces on both sides so I could have the pieces connected on either side which also added some stability. Quote
Kai NRG Posted February 13, 2014 Posted February 13, 2014 Looks nice, though personally I prefer the slightly less 'stud-y' technique of just cheese to the pixeled look the 1x1s give. Good job with the pattern though. Just in general (no need to change it here, especially if your bricks are limiting you) I would think that a building fancy enough to have stained glass wouldn't have so many different brick colors in its wall. nivremis Posted February 13, 2014 Posted February 13, 2014 Thanks for the kind comments guys, put together a simple moc this morning for AoM Archery Phase 1 - http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=92409 Do I also have to comment in the AOM thread? Quote

Garmadon Posted February 14, 2014 Posted February 14, 2014 Welcome to the guild, Direlda, great looking sigfig there I'm still trying to figure out what to do for Barracks Phase I @Nivremis, great to see you back, and yes, you need to link your build to the AoM thread (I mentioned that in your builds' thread too) Quote

EDIT: here's my window I threw together, any further tips? https://lh6.googleus...oto+%281%29.JPG It doesn't have an obvious color pattern, you could probably improve that by playing around with it a bit more. Also the tile on the bottom should be black to match the rest of the frame. Quote
HammerBro Posted February 14, 2014 Posted February 14, 2014 Oh man, I haven't been here in a while, I have missed a ton of awesome creations by the great Mitgardian builders, plus I love the history of the sig figs done by Garmadon. I have been busy working on a large project these past few months, that I decided to set somewhere in Historica. Here are some work in prorgress pics: Enjoy! Wow! Amazing scope you got there, the towers look great and the cliffs are awesome! Quote

EDIT: here's my window I threw together, any further tips? https://lh6.googleus...oto+%281%29.JPG I agree with Kai, you definitely need a black tile at the bottom (Something the top of my Stained glass window is also missing. Though overall it does look good, the colors are pretty random but I like it. Of course your window is going to need some lighting on the inside for it to really stand out. Eventually you will have to work up to making designs, similar to this: http://mosaicbricks.blogspot.com/2012/06/cheese-slope-mosaics-tutorial.html Quote
