Captain Grog Posted January 8, 2014 Posted January 8, 2014 I personally don't have a problem with large molds. In fact, I might even say I'd prefer a large Smaug mold over a brick built. Just curious though, is it easier and or more cost effective for Lego to make a large mold or design and package a large brick built dragon? I remember when I first saw the new fantasy dragons I initially thought they were not very "Lego like" because they just seemed like a toy, but after a while I fell in love with them.
BrickBob Studpants Posted January 8, 2014 Posted January 8, 2014 (edited) I don't mind if Smaug's brick-built, moulded or a mix of both, IMO he just needs to be posable and have printed eyes The T-Rex from the 2012 Dino theme is a great basis of comparison as others have pointed out, both size- and parts-wise. Since the anterior limbs/claws are attached to Smaug's wings instead of being separate from them (like is the case with most dragons TLG have released apart from the Hungarian Horntail, which was a bit too stiff), they really need to give him moveable limbs/wings made of cloth so that they're flexible enough to represent his "bat pose" I'm so glad New Line/WB went with that design, so much cooler than the standard "4 limbs, 2 wings" dragons you see everywhere Edited January 8, 2014 by Lego-Freak

Could you post a picture or explain what you mean?
BrickBob Studpants Posted January 8, 2014 Posted January 8, 2014 (edited) @Captain Grog: Here you go: http://strecno.devia...Smaug-420371345 As you can see, his wings are part of the anterior limbs and not a separate extremity, he's pretty wyvern-like this way Edited January 8, 2014 by Lego-Freak
Captain Grog Posted January 8, 2014 Posted January 8, 2014 Huh, I didn't notice that in the movie. That's an interesting design choice since it really isn't the traditional dragon we see in the Howe/ Lee illustrations.
Deathleech Posted January 8, 2014 Posted January 8, 2014 (edited) If 79016 = 35€ (more logical to be 29.99 or 39.99) then I can only see the exclusive be 49.99€ or same in $ ..... Wasnt Barrel escape 50$ ??? No, Barrel Escape was $39.99 (40) MRSP. Toys R Us has had the price jacked up different amounts throughout it's life cycle and that's where it was exclusive to here in the US. Always look at Lego S@H for the REAL MSRP though, which is $39.99, the same as Orc Forge which was a Target exclusive. Huh, I didn't notice that in the movie. That's an interesting design choice since it really isn't the traditional dragon we see in the Howe/ Lee illustrations. It's not suppose to be. I could of swore I read somewhere that Tolkien wanted his dragons to be more snake like than lizard like. Edited January 8, 2014 by Deathleech
Cammo Posted January 8, 2014 Posted January 8, 2014 They will include dwarves in that Smaug set or else it would be a waist for all those new beard and hair pieces.
deskp Posted January 8, 2014 Posted January 8, 2014 They will include dwarves in that Smaug set or else it would be a waist for all those new beard and hair pieces. Not at all a waste, they have served their purpose. They might as well reuse whatever other hair molds they have for other characthers, its not like they lose money from not using them. besides. Thorins hair has already got alot of use, and can be used in generic lego themes aswell. Dwalins beard wll åroapbly be used on the dwarf soldiers aswella s it can be used in generic themes. the rest however, not so much, but we'll see ore dwarfes in BO5A sets propably.
Roebuck Posted January 8, 2014 Posted January 8, 2014 with their leader Dain ridding on a boar :) I do not dare to hope we are that lucky
kevkipo Posted January 8, 2014 Posted January 8, 2014 Im thinking we will get Mini-leg printing Have you seen Bart from the Simpsons? Just saying... and better arm printing! Bart and Homer have those sleeves :P

Bart and Homer have those sleeves :P I'm not so sure, because of where different bits are made, but I would love it if we did. Given how far TLG has come with printing, I find it really surprising that they didn't sort out hobbit feet printing. It's such an iconic thing and to not do it has always seemed to me to be one of those missed opportunities in the LOTR and Hobbit ranges. I'd thought that maybe it was technically impossible, but as soon as I saw the Simpsons I did think "they've done it for Bart, why not Bilbo?"

Maybe because the Simpsons minifigures are yellow so they can be used with a majority of the other Lego themes, where as LotR/Hobbit are flesh colored? Probably not the reason considering people could still use the brown pants and flesh feet for a lot of different things I am sure, especially with the increasing amount of flesh minifigs available.
BlueberryWaffles Posted January 9, 2014 Posted January 9, 2014 Really I don't think arm printing is that necessary on LOTR figs. The TMNT need armbands though. Printed hobbit feet would be nice.

I'd thought that maybe it was technically impossible, but as soon as I saw the Simpsons I did think "they've done it for Bart, why not Bilbo?" I think it's more the Simpsons are benefitting from some newer tech and tooling. The short legs I think were always an issue because they pretty much required the printing to be done on a deeper point than the topmost plane of the piece. (I'm probably not describing what I mean well.) Lego rarely seemed to be able to print well in a sharp or narrow valley between 2 raised sections. They may have newer tech that lets them better or more efficiently do this now. The same with the arms. The Simpsons I believe are using some new arm molding, with the shirt sleeves molded in. Along with that they seem to have improved the capabilities for printing all the way around the cylander of the arm. The arm printing trick probably would be neat to use for the Dwarves. Many of them could use those chain mail armored short sleeves. Who knows maybe we will see some of it in the next Hobbit wave. Especially it they give us armored Dwarves for TABA. All new production tech eventually spreads throughout the lines. And it's staggering at how quickly we have been getting new and better looking figures recently. It looks like they have really really benefitted from things like 3d printing for prototyping. (Figure that must have shaved hundreds of man hours off minifig part development. No longer needing to do molding for test prototypes. Just keep printing them up and adjusting until they get it right, then straight to a production mold design?)

Trunkbass Posted January 9, 2014 Posted January 9, 2014 I just took a look at the new pictures of The Simpsons House set. It's a huge, 2000+ piece exclusive! being released at the beginning of a new license that has no previous popularity to go off of. It's mad me wonder about the future of exclusives within this theme. If LEGO is willing to take the risk of making a big exclusive as the intro to a new theme, perhaps they'll feel the same for the farewell of The Hobbit. Perhaps our chances of seeing a huge Smaug set aren't completely dashed after all. I mean, it's a theory, based simply on observation and fools' hope, but it's still a nice idea. I know we already have Bag End in the 2012 Unexpected Gathering set, but wouldn't it be awesome if we got a 2000 piece Hobbit hole ^^?
Deathleech Posted January 9, 2014 Posted January 9, 2014 I know we already have Bag End in the 2012 Unexpected Gathering set, but wouldn't it be awesome if we got a 2000 piece Hobbit hole ^^? Not really. I think almost everyone would prefer something new, like a 2000 piece Smaug perhaps? lol
SMC Posted January 9, 2014 Posted January 9, 2014 No 2000 piece smaug a large mold will do, save the 2000 for lotr
BlueberryWaffles Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 Minas Tirith or Erebor for the 2000 piece set.
Fletcher Floyd Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 Minas Tirith or Erebor for the 2000 piece set. Oh yeah -that would be great! I'd prefer Minas Tirith.
Darth Punk Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 Oh yeah -that would be great! I'd prefer Minas Tirith. I'm leaning toward Erebor which I find much more interesting looking. And would be more likely given the limbo state TLoR seems to be hanging in. I,really do hope TLG really wows us with the third wave. I feel up to now the sets, with an exception or two, have been lego just going through the motions to give us,something. A great deal of potential seems to be wasting away with the both LoTR and the hobbit.
kevkipo Posted January 11, 2014 Posted January 11, 2014 Just got this from General Magma in the LOTR thread F&*# yeah! Launch in October, Just saying awesomeness 4 sets is a little dissapointment but much better than nothing Super thrilled for this :'D i can cry right now
Mutant Orc Posted January 11, 2014 Posted January 11, 2014 Only four??!! Shame. I hope they change their mind and add another two... Still, at least we're getting some sets!
Darth Punk Posted January 11, 2014 Posted January 11, 2014 Overcome danger to gain treasure, interesting. Could there be exclusives not listed here?
