Lord Vladivus Posted January 23, 2015 Posted January 23, 2015 Welcome to the Guilds! I'd recommend checking Bricklink as well. Look at the pieces you already have and see what you can make from that, if you have 1000's of pieces there's should be plenty of usable bricks in there! Quote
ahilson Posted January 23, 2015 Posted January 23, 2015 Could be: but my kids are 5 and 3...ergo everything is bright blue, red, pink etc :) I could build some really nice elephants...or giraffes. Some of the new colours are pretty rad. Just, perhaps, not exactly what I had in mind for this hobby. The other thing is that while I do have some of my original Lego from the 80's and 90's, there are only a few pirate sets that I can pillage from. I seem to have retained much of the basic 2 x 4 x 2 bricks. On thing I did find nearly all of the pieces for was this beauty: http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItemPic.asp?O=375-2 Thanks though, I'll get going. Quote
kabel Posted January 23, 2015 Posted January 23, 2015 You should actually start with some hobbit or lotr sets as long as you can still get them Quote
SarahJoy Posted January 23, 2015 Posted January 23, 2015 I'm interested in joining this guild...and I'm still trying to wrap my head around the entire concept although I think I've gotten it. I've got lots of Lego...although I can initially see a problem with the fact that my 1000's of pieces are not conducive to building MOC's. I'll have to get cracking ordering individual bricks off of lego.com. If I may ask some advice: if you were starting out, with nothing (let's pretend I have no lego) what would initially order if you could? I've read the forum quite a bit and seen Derfel Cadarn's tutorial on building a village (great read BTW). I see a lot of round 1 x 1 plates in my future :) Gabe put together a useful list here. While it's ostensibly for building in Kaliphlin, the parts list itself is pretty guild-neutral. Quote
gedren_y Posted January 24, 2015 Posted January 24, 2015 Welcome to GoH, ahilson. Bright colors are good for quite a few things. Castles can come in a variety of colors, as well as houses, tents, and carriages. Take the time to look at some of the archived threads for some ideas. The links can be found in the first few posts of the pinned threads. Quote
ahilson Posted January 25, 2015 Posted January 25, 2015 You should actually start with some hobbit or lotr sets as long as you can still get them Thanks: I've been looking at a few of these sets. I think that there may be a couple (Tower of Orthanc or Helm's Deep) could hold the most bang for my buck, especially if they are in complete (i.e. on the cheap) Gabe put together a useful list here. While it's ostensibly for building in Kaliphlin, the parts list itself is pretty guild-neutral. I read the list. Definitely a big help. I would assume then that Avalonia would look for more colours like greys, dark greys, blues etc. for town MOC's and maybe some more brown, green, orange etc. for forest bits, yes? I have to ask if there are other recommended resources on techniques. One thing that I love are the roofs and brick walls that I see on a few (for example Legonardo's blacksmith shop. How is an effect like that achieved?!) Thanks Quote

ZCerberus Posted January 25, 2015 Posted January 25, 2015 I've got a new build, but it seems posting on mobile is too hard. I'll get official pics soon. Quote

-Carson Haupt- Posted January 27, 2015 Posted January 27, 2015 I need an opinion on a part of a build I'm working on. It's going to feature fairly good size stained glass and I'm torn between having a simple geometric design or a more complex picture. What are your opinions? Quote
ZCerberus Posted January 28, 2015 Posted January 28, 2015 Both work. If the window is small geometry is better IMO, bigger, go with a picture. No matter what, be sure to get plenty of light through it!! Quote
Hammerhand Posted January 29, 2015 Posted January 29, 2015 I agree with what ZC said, geometry works better than a picture for smaller windows, since you can't really do a whole lot of detail. Today I finished cleaning off my main lego table, which I had been procrastinating for a long time. It was literally completely covered with bricks and half-taken apart builds... I had set up a temporary other table to use, but that one's quickly becoming covered in bricks too... But at least my main building space is now clean. Quote
Rogue Angel Posted January 29, 2015 Author Posted January 29, 2015 Welcome to the Guild BMS and Nevyneke! Good choice of guilds. DeGothia, you just keep pumping out fantastic builds. You are a MOC-Monster! Mpoh, I love the tree in your build -excellent technique! ZCerbrus - beautiful build! Great to see your finally coming back to the best guild! Ahilson - Helm's Deep is about the best set you could get if you can get it for a reasonable price The Joust is also a good set overall. The Simpsons House is another great part-per-piece set, but it is primarily tan, so this will be less easy to fit into Avalonia. The Sandcrawler comes with a lot of brown and tan plates and wedge plates, which are decent for free build bases like MPoh's build above (although he used gray). But you'd probably be better off Bricklinking these parts. The King's Castle comes with a lot of gray, but the panels will probably be more useful as inner supports than walls themselves so keep that in mind. The Parisian Restaurant has some decent grays and olive greens as well. I would say Helm's Deep and the Joust at retail would probably be the only sets better than Bricklinking parts yourself. Quote
MiloNelsiano Posted January 29, 2015 Posted January 29, 2015 Hello all, and welcome new members! I've started a few new WIPs to try a few different techniques. One is a new keep, and I'm looking for a little feedback before I continue. First, I'm hoping to avoid "gray wall syndrome", despite using all bley pieces. I think the texturing breaks it up pretty well, but I'm not entirely sure (ignore the interior for now). Second, I've never down rocks before in such a large quantity. I like the look of them currently, but wouldn't mind a little feedback on them as well. Lastly (for now), I'm trying to figure out the best way to approach the castle. I had oringinally planned for a bridge to extend out over a gap, but lately I'm wondering if it would be better to have the rocks be more of a plateu, and the regular ground be level at their base. If this were the case, I'm not sure how to build a bridge/ramp/whatever else up to the gate. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Quote
Robin Creations Posted January 29, 2015 Posted January 29, 2015 MiloNelsiano- It's looking good! As for GWS, and I don't know what look you are going for, I would break it up with some light bley masonry bricks and bley studs. If you wanted a crumbly area you could use a headlight brick, a 1x2 bley plate or tile, and a normal brick. The tile attaches to the headlight brick, but since the headlight brick is indented, the normal brick pushes the tile out, creating a sloping look like this: WiP by Chance Reed, on Flickr You could also add some olive or dark green leaves. Hope I was of help! Quote
ZCerberus Posted January 29, 2015 Posted January 29, 2015 ZCerbrus - beautiful build! Great to see your finally coming back to the best guild! Shh... don't let them see me. Plus, you wouldn't want competition for your throne, would you Quote

Hi Milonelsiano - I think it is looking really good - I am not personally a fan of the extensive greebling used by some. I am thinking castles are build to be strong, and thus would be built well. However, one might say that castles where built by slightly ruffer stones (compared to temples, for examples), so some degree of mottling could be more realistic. (Brick- or log-bricks in same colour or other nuances.) Historica, though, is a fantasy setting, so I think the clean look works well! And with the structure you have created, you avoid the grey (bley :P) wall syndrome well. Not sure how to handle the entrance/gate - but I would imagine what kind of terrain would be chosen to build a castle upon. And how an entrance would be placed based on that. Looking forward to seeing more of this build! Brick on //Bregir Quote
Bregir Posted February 12, 2015 Posted February 12, 2015 Sorry for the double post - Hereby a small freebuild I have had sitting on the shelf for a while. Is Avalonia in hibernation or simply not as chatty as thos other (/inferior!) guilds? *Is off to hug a tree* Quote
de Gothia Posted February 12, 2015 Posted February 12, 2015 Kaliphlins have always been chatty! They don't have anything to do in their sand boxes!;) Right now both my sons are sick, that is why my activity is so low..:( Quote

These are techniques I like to some extent--but I'm not a huge fan of using them too much. I also don't have enough headlight bricks to make that effect. But since I'm not sure I could get build a true minifig scale castle, I have to scale down, which means this tiny irregularities also get scaled down, possibly to the point of not being seen. I guess I'm still playing with different techniques, seeing which I prefer. I definitely like the look of greebling, but think it gets over used. While most of the medieval age castles look very decrepit today, I'm guessing when they were built they looked much stronger. Rolli Posted February 13, 2015 Posted February 13, 2015 Thanks guys! Well one of them went to hospital this evening for his problems with cough, I'm home with the youngest! All the best! I'm very inactive these days, apologies for that. I'm still lurking but there's little time for commenting. I should be back by June or July - I'll be done with my degree by the end of May and then there are a couple of events such as Brickworld that will keep me from building Quote
