You are welcome to use a CCC build here for a free build, but I think it would not be allowed for a competition build within GoH.

It's been done quite a bit over the past two years. What seems to be frowned upon is using the same structure and swapping out the figs/flags from LCC/LoR to GoH (or the other way around).

Speaking of building, I'm done with it for a while. I just don't know what to build and it stresses me out every time I try to think of something. Maybe I'm just fed-up and sick of my ideas I had before that I just want to wait for what I actually want to build on. :wall:

Anyone else feel this way?

Anyone else feel this way?

I'm more like: "Aargh! So much ideas of what to build (in GoH and elsewhere), and so little time..."

As I've been telling other people, start small and develop your style (which we have already seen you do). With the feedback you will get when you post them here you will grow as a builder and hopefully also grow more confident in your ability to make your ideas materialize in ABS :classic:

Exactly my thoughts!

I feel the same way with ideas but the Roman and Ancient Greek idea definitely suits me and I am 99.9% positive I will stick with it. Building for it is a whole other story...

But I feel like starting small is my main problem. I always want to start big because I'm typically lazy and don't want to develop stories for it and help it grow. But when I do create stories, I practically can't stop. However, if I wanted to start off with creating a city for Kaliphlin, how would you suggest me starting it and leading up to it getting wealthy and expanding? I do want to have the city to be depicted as a large place and with a very diverse population of different races but maintain the refined and beautiful look like Rome and other historical places.

What I'm trying to get at is I want to "show off" to you guys but have very beautiful builds. Don't get me wrong, that starting small isn't bad, but I feel like it's easier to make something big look amazing.

Like I've stated before, I think your main reason for wanting to build is wrong. Unless you are doing a commission, (which you are not) you should be building for the three I's- me. myself, and I. When you build, all that matters is that me likes it, myself thinks it is awesome, and I am satisfied with the build.

If your only reason for building is to get congratulated by others, you are setting yourself up for disappointment and discouragement. As I am quite an independent spirit, I have thought sometimes about quitting GoH so that I can have more freedom with my builds. However since I've spent so much time with GoH already it seems like a waste to just quit. So I will continue but with less time alotted for it as I also build other creations with total freedom.

If you need inspiration, look at what everyone else has done. Look at the technique how-tos. Figure out what appeals to you and what you can build given your available pieces. Once you have something that interests you, start putting pieces together. Many people plan beforehand. I just slap pieces together. Figure out which method works for you.

Start small. You can't make a behemoth build without the component structures anyway. Make things modular so you can easily upgrade as you pieces and skill increase. Your build will grow over time.

I have to echo Mike. Build for you. If it's not fun, why do it? Acclaim will come eventually, but it will never come if you never build.

I am definitely of the opinion that a big build with so-so level of detail is inferior to a mini build with the right level of detail. I try to think that "every stud should have some thought behind it", which typically translates to if I have an area of plate bigger than say 4x4 I try to break it up with some detailing. When it comes to walls and the like, I don't like having more than a couple of similar pieces next to each other before I want to introduce some kind of variation.

So for me it is all up to how much time I have for a build when I plan it, and regulate by size and not by quality. But then I'm blessed with a collection that has grown enough over the past 3 years since I started building again that I'm usually not that concerned over the total piece count (except for specific parts of course). So if parts availibility is an issue as well, there is even more reason to not go too big.

Many people plan beforehand. I just slap pieces together. Figure out which method works for you.

I'm definitely one of the first kind. I usually have quite a clear view in my head of what I want to build, and even the angle I want to have the "principal photo" from, before I start putting bricks together. That doesn't mean that it isn't a lot of iterative work when I realize that what looked great in my head did not work with bricks

It's pretty hard to build small with a Greco-Roman look. I sympathise with that. But I totally agree with Mike, ultimately you should build to impress only one person: yourself.

I'm a bit stuck on my current build. I have built facades as usual for the back drop. It looks reasonably good. I haven't started on the foreground detail yet. But if I want to display in the big HK show this year which is in 3 weeks, I'll have to build the back too. Problem is, I'm out of bricks. And I'm going to Japan for a week before the show. And, I have to get started on the next 2 challenges... So I'm not sure if I should start again, or just finish it off quickly and move on...

Hello Everyone,

I'm a looooong time lurker who finally got a little time to build. After much reading, I think Kaliphlin is the guild for me.

My first moc is one that I'm currently building for the Colossal Castle Contest (I don't want to count the Bricklink orders I've gone though). I've seen many people reference "GoH-izing" builds from other purposes. May I do the same with this one?

If so, may I claim a random spot in Whispering Wood (my brick palate is completely grey, but all of my mini-figs are crusader lions an I own all of 1 green flag for Avalonia)? I'll eventually seek village qualification for it (I think this build will have all the required points except the food production).

Also, from a thematic perspective, the moc is a mage school. I've seen may people reference magic in GoH as something rare. Will something like a mage school for the four lands fit in this place?

Welcome to Kaliphlin Cookiesdad! A mage school sounds sweet, and the Wither woods is a rather underbuilt area still so it's good to see ppl take it on. :classic: Look forward to seeing what you come up with!

I feel the same way with ideas but the Roman and Ancient Greek idea definitely suits me and I am 99.9% positive I will stick with it. Building for it is a whole other story...

Big is not always better.. small can be awesome dude. Have a look at some microscale by builders like Siercon and Coral or lisqr if you don't believe me.

Size in a moc is of much less importance than composition and level of detail. You can pack a heap into a footprint as small as 8x8 studs - just treat it as a challenge!

Oh and Gideon i hear ya about wishing you had more hours in the day to build - i find myself wishing i didn't need to sleep sometimes, just think of all the building i could get done...

Alright, thanks for the pep-talks guys. I Will try to get in somewhat large builds because after seeing Gideon's MOC with the marketplace, I was amazed and I really liked it. So by large builds, I mean builds like that to show off different areas for the new city I wish to establish. Though, I will be starting it off small and have stories leading up to it's creation. So after to holidays, expect some interesting stories with my protagonist and antagonists based around this "utopia". But, I still want to somehow incorporate you guys into the stories, if you wish to PM me or I'll PM you in the near future, that way it kind of unites us Kaliphlinites together. So I'll try to get you guys into stories and make your guys' sig-figs but if you do PM me, PM me the parts you wish for me to use on your character if you have a yellow toned sig-fig. Remember, fleshies are my choice.

And I know this sounds kind of odd, but I want it to be like a group effort or something like that, story wise, that way everyone is somehow connected with the "utopia". Only if you'd like, that's up to you.

Thanks again for the pep-talks you guys, and these builds will be up after Christmas or so. As for the Zar-Ifrikt, I will have to do something with them but I don't want to just dispose of them. I plan on incorporating them into my project somehow.

Hi guys! Since school started in September I've been kinda stressed and haven't had much time for GoH or much of legos at all. So if anyone was wondering, no I haven't died. But as I said before I might be poping in and out. But since I might be back for a bit I've made a small build and posted it on flickr. I don't have the time right now to post it here but just thought you guys might wanna check it out.

IM BACK!!

NiceMarmot - that technique looks perfect for a roof. The curve in it could work well.

I too wish I had more time to build. I've spent the last month working on my armies, and finally got my Dwarves customized as I'd like. I can't seem to commit to a build yet since I still have a tub to sort from BW and all my ships came crashing down, so I've got those to sort out too. (Plus I still haven't posted my build yet) I have plenty of ideas though.

I think the new Elves theme has some decent potential even though it's Friendsecized.

I've been describing in words a few times how I've constructed my backdrop for photography, and I found a pic on my iPhone from the last session.

(Sorry about the bad quality)

The setup is very simple, a drying rack that can be easily disassembled and a roller blind from Ikea which I'm bending in over the living room table. Putting it up and taking it down in less than 5 minutes :classic:

Thanks, Gideon! This is what I am trying to construct after I received feedback from you on one of my builds. This definitely makes a nice backdrop if even lighting is used.

...Back to the North I head!

By any chance, does anyone know of a fabric that is similar, and hopefully cheap, to the fabric used for LEGO capes and kamas? I plan to use kamas as a "mark" of some sort for my soldiers in my project.

Amen to that! Sleeping is the biggest waste of time imaginable. Well, it would be if we didn't need it so much. This year I've been training myself to sleep around five hours a night and still be a functioning human being. When I do try to catch more sleep these, I just find myself lying awake in bed thinking about what I'm going to build next!

Two days to go till the Williamstown expo in Melbourne and I am still waiting on a bricklink order from Belgium to finish off the water. :cry_sad:

Edit- the parts arrived with 3 hours to spare. :classic:15727495181_84ea822752_t.jpg

Congratulations on your trophy BrickCurve!

Thanks, a bonus came with the trophy, a 40% off voucher for lego! :sweet: I still haven't decided what to spend it on, a parisian cafe maybe?

I just had to fix about a third of my Nesltands Embassy in Nocturnus. It got damaged on Friday when I was putting away Christmas presents. The long box was a little cumbersome, and I didn't see the build in the dark.

I have to get back to building tomorrow. The last thing I did was a creature for the Bionicle contest. I still have to photograph that, but I may add it to a future build here.
