gedren_y Posted January 31, 2016 Posted January 31, 2016 Heralds of the Desert King has been to every town save those of Esterbroke and Gorr, where the DK's influence waned significantly after the unofficial armistice caused by the supposed death of First Centurion and the taking of Petraea. The message is clear. "Loyal soldiers of the Pharaoh must return to Sultan's Gate and prepare for the next revealing of prophecy for the Great War. All Noble subjects of Kaliphlin who fought against the One True King shall be forgiven for their transgressions if they send a troop of warriors in time for the prophecy's revealing on December 1st. Those who do not send their good will, will be made to heel in good time." It is suspected that the alliance between the Desert King and the united rebel forces of Nocturnus will come to fruition, as he sets his troops against the Spire in the months to come. The present state of Kaliphlin is in flux. It takes money, men, and will to wage a war; all of which have been spent over the last year. As fall turns to winter, the last of the very few farmers return to their much destroyed fields to bring in a possible harvest, and to avoid starvation throughout the Guild. Soldiers that have survived take temporary leave, as few armies are still standing during the lull. Mercenaries have moved on, many traveling east in hopes to find new sources of coin. The only occupied cities are those of Ulandus, where the DK's main regiments still hold his hated enemy's high seat. Matters of administration are shaky as best, as the West turns to a new Council, the East has mostly pledged to the Desert King, and Gorr keeps hope that First Centurion will return to liberate his lands. On Esterbroke, Petera MacLean has completed a cleansing of Desert King influence by killing all the traitors of the island and firmly asserting Council control of the island. Refugees of the middle-lands of the guild board GEAR ships and sail to the island, thus making it impossible for the Desert King to see the island to his Avalonian allies. One thing is clear, Kaliphlin has changed, I clear leader has not emerged, and the Desert King's grip on the guild is tenuous at best. Can he become beloved? Will the First Centurion return? Will a High Council Member elevate to sovereign to reunite and rebuild the guild? ---- As for the winners of the challenge... I have just been so swamped. I am not sure when we will be able to announce them. For now, it seems as if the DK is in control of most of the guild, with heavy resistance still following. DK troops infiltrated much of Kaliphlin, and the majority of it is technically under his control. The will to fight has been taken from the people, and therefore, DK for all intents and purposes has seemed to be the victor. What happened to this? Did it get postponed or simply dropped because of the Frozen Beyond contest? Quote
SkaForHire Posted January 31, 2016 Author Posted January 31, 2016 Skaforhire got buried in work! Funny thing is, I was thinking about this this morning, I know I have to set it up. Just trying to find my Desert King figs to create the intro build. I am going to post it as a mini-challenge. Quote
Tokru Posted February 1, 2016 Posted February 1, 2016 Hello members of Kaliphlin, I just stumbled upon eurobricks and the Guilds of Historica. I'm really impressed by all the creativity here and I'm thinking about starting to build something too. I have some questions though. I didn't really see anything resembling greek or roman themes. Is there a place for something like that in Kaliphlin? According to to description of the guilds in the new member guide classical antiquity would best fit into Kaliphlin. But the themes of the MOCs I've already seen is more Middle Eastern/Islamic/Crusader-like. Would white (marble) temples, or similar themes, clash with the rest due to the time difference? (I know in the end it's all fantasy, but maybe there are people who are a little bit pedantic, like me ) Anyway, because presently I don't have (yet) any mentionable collection of parts to build with, is it possible to build in LDD or is this discouraged? Hey Tokru! First of all: welcome to EB, and welcome to GoH! We're glad to have you! Classical antiquitiy would probably be situated in Kaliphlin, but more in it's northern regions. These are a bit like greece, I think, ik between Turkey and the rest of Europe. But also, The most Southern parts of Acalonia could hold such things (I've always seen that part of Historica as the middle between Southern France (Carcasonne), Northern Italy (Tuscany) and a bit of Spain...) (but the last sentence might also be me recruting you to come to the best guild, wich is defenitely Avalonia ) We accept LDD (please someone else, verify) Anyway, glad you're here! Quote

There is most definitely room for this! You can come up with pretty much every architectuural style amd culture you want. When you have doubts that something could not fit a good background story can justify nearly everything. Despite northern snowy regions Kaliphlin has pretty much every landscape to offer and is inhabited by a large number of different cultures. There are more medieval european styled areas in the north at the border to Avalonia and far east asian influenced cities in the east of the Rakath. While the main part of Kaliphlin is of course a mash up of near and middle asia, tthre is also a strong ancient egypt influence ( but after the civil war the majority of the Kaliphlinites seem to have developed a strong aversion against that). And ancient greek roman influences can be found pretty much everywhere. Eapecially Ulandus should be interesting for you. This ancient realm was reunited with Kaliphlin last year. And while present in countless battles, we still haven't seen very much of this mystic island. But you should inform yourself about the Kaliphlin civil war to understand Ulandus and prevent conflict with the main story line. Speaking of this: there is no such thing like time difference. Feel free to use every historical influence you like. As long as it fits as a whole nobody will complain. You can use LDD. But you will soon realise that it's not very satisfying compared to real bricks. And of course you need a personal character. And LDD doean't offer many parts to have an imdividual figure. also, LDD is often not allowed for contests and challenges. So you would be limited to free builds only. The community will sure give you advise how to start a collection. There are already guides in the official eurobricks indexes. Quote

Welcome to the guilds! Greek and Roman themes haven't been explored very much though there have been a few Kaliphlinian builds with strong Greco-Roman influence, and Kaliphlin is certainly the guild where those influences would make most sense. As Jacob Nion was saying, that sort of architecture could well be found in Ulandus, the new island down in the south. I don't think the time difference would be a problem, especially if your builds are designed to be more Greek-influenced rather than endeavoring to replicate a pristine Greco-Roman style. With regards to LDD, while using real bricks is encouraged LDD is also fine, though it may not be permitted for certain challenges. Quote

Welcome to the Guilds! As others have said, Kaliphlin is definitely the best guild for you. I don't know much about LDD but I believe TLG have stopped adding new parts to it. The fan made alternatives are BrickSmith (Mac) and LDraw (Windows). If you decide to go down the digital path then you should definitely look into rendering you models. It makes them a lot more realistic and smoother compared to pictures of a LDD model. For real models, some sets that have good parts are the large elves castle, one of the pirate forts and that new star wars temple set. Selling the mini figures in the star wars set makes it a more financially viable proposition for parts. Quote
Tokru Posted February 3, 2016 Posted February 3, 2016 Thanks for the nice welcome. In the next few days I will try to gather all the information about Ulandus, the place you mentioned. It sounds interesting. I only made it to page 70 of this thread so far and there was no mention of it till now. Are there other sources for information, or is everything regarding the story inside this thread? I looked into the wiki, but that seems a bit out of date. Quote

You won't find much about Ulandus in this thread except perhaps some discussion on the Kaliphlin civil war, and it is also not in the main story thread, which is very out of date. http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=106498&view=&hl=&fromsearch=1 http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=106417 Here are the main pages for ChIV, which was where Ulandus was introduced. There are a lot of links there to the preludes and most of the warzones and guerrilla( and the warzones have links to the individual builds) so if you want to look through it all you can learn most of what there is to know about Ulandus and the Kaliphlin civil war Edited February 3, 2016 by LordDan Quote
SkaForHire Posted February 4, 2016 Author Posted February 4, 2016 Welcome Tokru! Over our long four years, we have had a few people start characters and towns that have been more Greco-Roman, but they have not stuck around through the long haul. There is one really beautiful MOC I am thinking of with a town scene on a hill side that was very reminiscent of Greece... OF course, with thousands of MOCs, I am not where to find it! We would welcome more Greek / Roman builds as we move forward! Quote

gedren_y Posted February 5, 2016 Posted February 5, 2016 I have the second part of my Vladivus at the Nestlands Embassy build done, and I will try to take pics today, but it might not be up till Sunday, or possibly Monday. I am still writing the dialog. The long awaited next installment for Quest for the Egg is also nearly done. This may be quite timely, because the following installment goes into ancient Drow tunnels. Both of these builds are about events that happened in the past. I will do my best to weave together these with more recent events. I also have other storylines I need to pick up, but BoBS is consuming some of my attention right now. I also have been itching to build some sci-fi, but that may be because I've been watching my Babylon 5 dvds. Quote

Luckypat Posted February 9, 2016 Posted February 9, 2016 Hello all, I was introduced by a few people to GOH and thought that I would take a look. I really find all the different guilds, locations and MOCs here really amazing. I have a quick question about this... would it be alright if I stick to "interior" builds, or must they be (example) a full out trading market. I'm not too experienced with building larger scenes and exteriors of buildings, but, I'm really looking into it. I've been playing around with older looking interiors, creating libraries or an explorers room that has aged, etc. Slowly, I'm beginning to make MOCs that are increasing in size, hopefully to a point where I can create both an exterior and an interior to a building/structure. Because of my most recent build, I have plenty of sand pieces to use and thought that Kaliphlin would be the best location to choose. Please let me know whenever you guys can. Apologies for the "nooby" question and hope to join you guys! ~Pat Quote

Third: you should chose Avalonia! We're the nicest guild ever, and if you want to use that tan, just pick some land at the southern frontier! Quote
MiloNelsiano Posted February 9, 2016 Posted February 9, 2016 I'll start by saying don't worry about asking nooby questions--there's tons of information here and understanding it at first can be overwhelming, or at least it was for me a first. Interior builds is absolutely fine. You can build what you want as long as fits within the developed parameters (Fantasy medieval, as opposed to steam punk or firearms). There may be some contests where you have to build outside, but you're never obligated to participate in them. While we would definitely love you in Avalonia, if you think kaliphlin's style suits you more, then go with what you're most comfortable with. One of the main focuses here is to improve your ability to build, so you're always encouraged to step outside your comfort zone to build something you've never done before. By trying new things and receiving feedback, building abilities are improved. If you feel most comfortable building interiors in kaliphlin, go ahead and start there. Eventually you can work your way to building landscapes (small at first if so desired), or you can work your way into building different styles from the other guilds. Or if you only ever want to build interior kaliphlin builds, then you only build those. It's all acceptable, we're really just happy to have more people involved! Quote
